This was our 2nd stay in the hotel, the first being in 2006. We were obviously pleased the first time, and chose to return to the hotel. The reception staffs were lovely and check in was a breeze - they gave us a free extra bed for our 4 year old upon request.
We were travelling with our 2 young children (4 yo and 10 months) as well as with our parents, who stayed in Lagoon Room.
We stayed in the newly renovated Luxury Room, which though huge & nicely appointed, had a major electrical fault which was fixed FOUR times over 3 days. After the 4th black-out, which occurred (again) just before the kids' bedtimes, we had had enough and requested to to be moved to another room. To be fair, the reception staff was highly apologetic and compensated us with a meal voucher.
Now to the hotel. It's definitely looking tired and can do with a lick of paint and renovations to the common areas. The Kids Club was a disappointment & security was an issue. On some days there was just 1 staff and any child could have strayed out of the area. The hotel staffs were friendly but not as warm as you'd expect, this being a 5-star hotel in Thailand. Breakfast was standard and a bore after 7 mornings... the menu did not change at all! The Canal Village also needs a major revamp. Overall, it was difficult to imagine that this is part of the Luxury Collection. A couple of years back, service seemed a lot friendlier, perhaps because it was post-tsunami. And of course the hotel didn't look quite so tired.
We took a look at the JW Marriott and that's definitely where we'll stay next time. Kids Club was very nicely fitted out, had loads of activities and had better security ... if you're travelling with older kids (9 and above), they'd definitely be bored at the Sheraton's Kids' Club.
We did come away extremely pleased with the Italian restaurant: excellent food and service.
