The most positive thing I can say about this place is that most of the staff in the front office go out of their way to try and fix problems as they arise. Unfortunately, we tested their problem solving skills for three days, but in the end just gave up and moved to the Laguna Beach Resort.
The original room we booked was the duplex (Princess) room. One trip up the narrow, winding, concrete staircase and I immediately knew I had made the wrong choice for us. These stairs could not be considered child friendly (especially if you have a child who wakes in the night and will come looking for you). The duplex rooms are also located on a busy road with loud noisy cars roaring past with stereos blasting that would have been more at home in a nightclub than in a car. An added bonus was the lovely view of the overhead powerlines from the balcony. The final touch was the half eaten tray of thai fruit that had been left in the fridge by previous occupants and not cleaned away by the staff. The smell was quite something. I had just closed the fridge when an arguement broke out upstairs between the kids as to who was going to sleep in the bed that had the stain on the quilt....
The front office manager generously moved us to the two bedroom family suite when I explained my concerns regarding the stairs. This was unfortunately located only two doors down from our original room and was the closest room to Joe Kools restaurant. That evening the music kicked off at about 8pm and went until just after midnight. The kids and I felt like we were right there on the dance floor and my sense of humour was being sorely tested by midnight, faced with two awake, extremely tired and crying children. Somehow it is just not the same when a Thai man sings "My Heart Will Go On" (Titanic) at midnight when you are totally shattered, faced with crying children, and sober...
Room three were two adjoining rooms which were large and clean. I wished I had just booked these in the beginning, but the reason for booking this hotel in the first place was to take advantage of the themed rooms and their facilities. The Sony Playstation which had made the journey from room 1 to room 2 did not come with us to room 3. There was no memory card which made most of the games unable to be played. I asked the Technician about this, and he basically indicated that they had all been taken by previous guests and there were no more available.
Another member of our party had booked the "Space" room and did not fare much better, other than this room is located in a much quieter part of the hotel away from the road. The room was dark and dingy and stank. The children from this family were too scared to use the bathroom, which was extremely old and must have been forgotten about in the hotel renovation. There is no way to roll up the blind to let in any natural light or ventilation (hence the smell). I guess the renovations did not include the airconditioners either, the one in this room was really noisy and old.
The kids loved the slide in the childrens pool, which is located next to the kids club, however my 5 year old gave up when another much older heavier child landed on her, causing her to smash her chin on the bottom of the pool. The pool attendant had gone walkabout, but given that his station was at the other end of the pool to where the slide is, it probably didn't matter. If you are thinking about buying a good book and reading on a sunbed forget it. The only supervision on the slide was by anxious parents. Not like at the Laguna, who have a fantastic slide and whose pool attendant is placed at the top of the slide to make sure kids leave enough space between each other (especially little ones). The kids club is not air conditioned and did not appeal to any of the kids in our group (aged from 4 to 9 years). It looked like it might be more appropriate for very young children and we did not use it, other than this is the place where the "all you can eat" ice-cream, popcorn and slushies are dispensed from. If you want any of these I suggest that you get there early, as once they are gone they are not replenished. Even the kids refused the slime green slushies on offer after they were told there were no more ice-creams. We arrived at the pool at 3pm that day.
The breakfast buffet became the butt of many funny jokes between several other hotel guests and ourselves. One of the kids in our party is nicknamed T-Rex due to his love of meat, and even he refused the bacon which looked like it had been deep fried or something? The two choices of cereal were basic at best, so I ended up paying for chocolate milkshakes which were very icy and the kids also did not drink. All the dishes on the buffet are presented in pots with heavy pottery-type lids, making it impossible for the kids to help themselves (if there had of been anything they wanted). On the third morning I just didn't bother and gave the kids the milos from the mini bar whilst I was packing. After arriving at the Laguna Phuket, whose pool is located metres from a beautiful stretch of beach in Bang Tao Bay our holliday began. The Laguna provided a lush tropical paradise with a fantastic family holliday atmosphere, unlike the concrete jungle that is the Ramada. It was a bit more expensive, but not much, given what we ended up paying due to cancellation fees etc. once the Travel Agent became involved.....
