“A Place to Chill Out!”

By The Sea

4 of 5 stars
South Coast
Feb 26, 2008

We recently spent a fortnight at By The Sea Residence and can honestly say that we had a quiet, peaceful and thoroughly relaxing holiday in an unspoiled part of Phuket Island.

If it's excitement and a lively resort with a bustling nightlife you are seeking then By The Sea at Khao-Khard Beach is definitely not for you. The more commercialised west coast resorts of Patong Beach and Karon Beach would be better suited to those that want to party late and enjoy crowded beaches and non stop noise.

By The Sea Residence is positioned in a very quiet area on a hillside overlooking the gorgeous Chalong Bay with its many islands. It is right next door to Novotel and there are signs of the development of more hotels and apartments on the hillside so the tranquillity of the area will probable not survive for much longer.

On the plus side, all the rooms at By The Sea Residence have fantastic sea views looking out directly across the bay. In addition, the rooms are very spacious with kitchen and lounge areas as well as large bedrooms. All rooms have satellite TV although very limited on English speaking channels.

The restaurant is at beach level alongside the small pool and the menu is reasonable although a bit limited. Pricing of food is more expensive than the two or three nearby beach bars and averages around 150 - 200 baht for a meal but there is a 10% service surcharge plus a 5% Government Tax both of which don't apply at the local beach restaurants/bars. We were able to buy a meal at these beach bars for as little as 50 baht!

The staff at By The Sea are excellent - always courteous, always smiling and the management went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

There is very little to do in the evening at By The Sea and customers would benefit from having occasional entertainment by the pool - something which the Novotel next door did on a regular basis to good effect.

The beach is not particularly good at Khao-Khard and there are problems for families in particular. The sandy area is quite narrow and when the tide is out (which can sometimes be for most of the day) there are large rocks which makes swimming at low tide impossible. At high tide it is possible to swim safely but even then foot covering is recommended as it is not unusual to find broken glass on the beach and in the sea. We eventually paid 650 baht for a taxi to Kata Beach on the west coast which is wonderful for bathing and has a fantastic beach and is certainly a class above the Karon and Patong Beach resorts in every respect.

If you want to go into Phuket Town for some shopping, By The Sea provides a complimentary mini-bus service twice daily and it takes about 20 minutes door to door.

Also provided free of charge is the use of bikes and canoes for those who want a little exercise.

By The Sea Residence will suit those who are seeking a peaceful holiday and are happy to laze in the sun and have the occasional dip in the pool or the sea (when the tide is in). If you like relaxing and doing very little other than chilling out then this is definitely the place for you.

“Fantastic Vacation”

I was there from 26- 29th Nov 2007 with my family of 3 children. We love the place as it is not overly crowded and the beach was beautiful. The 1-bedroom is huge and very suitable for my family of 5. There is a laundry room that we can do our washing and drying for just 100 Bht total. The hotel is right on the beach and having breakfast on the beach was very lovely. Breakfast is good but varity is not that fantastic but overall, good. There is a Novetel hotel just besides us and thus does not make the beach too quiet at all which is perfect. My kids love catching crabs and playing by the sea. The tide was low in the morning and late evening. Best time is from 10am - 3pm as the water is high enough for a nice swim. The hotel do provide free rental on canoeing but there are only 3 life jackets for adults and 1 for child. Staff are extremely friendly. View is fantastic however, I must say pool is a bit small. Good that we were there not during the overly peak, else pool will be too crowded. Food in the hotel is expensive for Phuket standard not unless you drive and go elsewhere to eat.
Overall, we love the hotel and location and am now looking forward to planning our next trip there again. This time we will definitely spend more than just 4days!!

We stayed here recently and I noticed there were no reviews for this place so thought I would write one!

The apartments seemed to be mostly privately owned and some were rented out to holidaymakers. Breakfast (adequate for the price we'd paid) was eaten outdoors undercover with spectacular beachfront scenery. Nothing much here apart from hotel next door which was very expensive to eat at in comparison to Thai prices. By The Sea also quite expensive to eat and drink. All apartments have sea views and there is free internet access at a small room at reception.

As you walk onto the beach at the back of the apartments where the swimming pool is turn left and walk along the sand for 5 minutes. Here there are 2 beach places to eat. Lobster, crab, fish all caught that day to be had for a couple of English pounds. Also another place by the side of the road-out of the apartments at the front, down the hil for 10mins walk and you'll see it. Stunning views.

By The Sea provide a twice daily free transport into Phuket. Staff could not do enough for us. My husband smokes tobacco and couldn't get any, one of the young guys behind the bar got him a packet from his friend who worked at the airport and would not take any money. All he would say is "No, you are my friend!" Amazing considering the low wages they are paid!!

We had a wonderful time but were taken aback as we left by an unexpected turn of events. I went to reception and paid the bar bill, asking for someone to come and help carry the bags. Before I could get back there FOUR members of staff beat me to it and they proceeded to go through the place with a fine tooth comb checking the mini bar was intact and the dressing gowns, flip flops and towels were still there!!!!!!! I was very suprised at this and it was the only flaw in an otherwise perfect holiday.
