This hotel is set in the middle of the French Quarter which has to be experienced to be believed, just outside the front door there is a street market which starts at 6am, overflows onto the pavements, and goes on until the curfew at 10 pm. All street lights go out at 11pm. There are loudspeakers at intervals along the street which blast out Government messages all day long and sometimes martial music. There are some lovely little craft shops on that street, the products are of good quality and very good value compared with other towns in Vietnam, also an excellent dressmaker who makes beautiful embroidered clothing and ballgowns. The bedroom we had was spacious and clean enough but smelt damp and musty, not surprising given the climate. The chambermaid brought us fresh fruit and flowers every day, so many flowers in fact we almost ran out of places to keep them. The buffet breakfast was adequate but when the bread rolls, which were quite delicious, ran out they were never replaced. Also the staff use the toaster all the time to make toasted sandwiches for themselves. The good thing about the restaurant is that there is a duty chef there all day who lies under a table but will come out to cook a hot meal when requested. The reception staff were not especially friendly and alleged we had used the minibar when we had not but the manager seemed very efficient and sorted it all out. There is free access to the internet at a very old slow PC on the ground floor, also there is a cash machine. The very scenic lake and temple are within 5 minutes walk, also there are many restaurants and cafes nearby and the Water Puppet theatre which is an absolute must for first time visitors to experience. This is one of the most eccentric hotels in which I have ever stayed. I would recommend it to anyone tired of the hotel chain experience.
