Let me say from the beginning that I am not fond of Vietnam. I run a small export business and take trips to Hanoi and Saigon once a month and have stayed all over the place. Don’t expect too much in the way of hotels unless you plan to pay for it through the nose. Overall, small Old Quarter hotels are in very mediocre shape, and remind me of bad university student housing. I’ve been known here and in Saigon to switch hotels within one hour. I don’t do the 10 dollar dives anymore – too risky. I advise travelers to Vietnam that they should inspect their room prior to checking in. There are just too many choices available now to be stuck in a room you hate.
Rising Dragon hotel appears to be part of revitalization among a few places in the area (I also saw Hanoi Orchid, Democracy, and Bamboo looked clean too). You can tell from the lobby that the place is well-maintained. Instead of dirty damp rooms, theirs are well-aired and sanitary. Beds are still hard like most places and the tubs are thigh-high. No mats in the tub, so easy to slip, no ice in the rooms, and has those internal windows that only give you a view of the window across the way. Laundry service was fast and good quality. Didn’t have the breakfast, but liked the coffee bar. Could use bigger cups though. I talked with Hieu, the manager, twice and I think I understand why this place keeps getting good reviews. I think the Vietnamese are starting to get the picture about customer service and about not cheating customers – you only earn a poor reputation! Rising Dragon is a safe bet in a sea of sharks.
