“A wonderful place to stay”

I am extremely surprised to read the review posted on 5th Jan 2006, in fact I can only think that they are describing a different hotel. I stayed at the Kalehan for a week in July with my husband and 11 year old son and we found it to be an excellent hotel. All the staff were incredibly helpful, friendly and hardworking (as well as the owner and his wife), we could not fault them. The rooms were clean, comfortable and typically Turkish. The antique collections add character and interest throughout. The food was excellent and the menu was certainly not "tourist food". The hotel uses organic produce where possible and some of it is grown on site. The private walled gardens are lovely and peaceful, with a view of the castle - there is a lawned area with various places to sit; sunbeds, swing-chairs, tables and chairs, etc dotted around in shady places, a swimming pool with sunbeds and seating areas, with changing room and pool side snack bar. The lounge is comfortable with a TV and some games. There is also a small shop selling good quality gifts. The hotel is easily accessed on the main road, with adequate parking.

Management Response

Prejudiced Judgement

We have felt the urge to write a reply as management to this unfair judgement review of our hotel. We are a family establishment of 25 years and for the first time have received such a bad review. We have always viewed our customers as guests and tried to maximize customer satisfaction in every way we can.

The hotel was designed as an old Anatolian inn, bringing together old and antique pieces from different locations and different time eras. So valuable antiques are exhibited along with the less valuable old pieces. The rooms are designed with Ottoman style windows, in their original sizes to keep away the heat of summer. We have different buildings surrounding a swimming pool and the rose garden. Some rooms have a view of the garden and some have a view of the castle among the trees located behind us. But regarding the location of the hotel we do not have any other view as see or mountain view. In winter months, when the tourism is really low, our buildings facing the garden are closed for heating and security purposes. Naturally the staff is reduced as well. The concept of an old Anatolian inn, is kept in the decoration of the rooms as well, with white washed walls, ironwrought beds, wooden furniture decorated with embroidery, oil paintings of view from Turkey and bedcovers made from local cotton fabric.

After this review, we have watched our camera recording in the lobby and have not seen any staff sleeping. He was preparing breakfast in the kitchen. We have a bell at the reception to call a staff when no body’s attending the reception. But unfortunately this was not noticed by the clients. Instead they had to wait at the reception for one of our staff to come out of the kitchen.

Of course the taste buds of every individual is very different, but we always get good appraisals for our food as we have many guests coming to eat at our restaurant that are staying in other places.

The worst of all , we were accused of charging a credit card twice. But this was totally done by mistake. Our employee wiped the credit card, but the paper was stuck in the machine. He did not realize that the card went through. Then some time has passed when he changed the paper. He wiped the card again. When it was realized that the card went through twice the customer was assured that the amount would be returned to him. That amount was returned to his credit card back through the bank. Of course it would have been more reasonable for both sides, for a guest leaving early for the airport to pay the bills the night before, especially in a small hotel. We are terribly sorry to have viewed as a dishonest hotel, which we are very keen on.
