“Consistently excellent”

Hotel Kalehan

For the sixth year in a row we have taken a small group to the Kalehan for a three night stay in a 22 day tour. Once again everyone loved it, appreciating the beautiful gardens and pool, the comfortable, charmingly decorated rooms and the friendly, natural staff. They must have the best chef in Selcuk as the food is delicious, varied, organic and superbly presented. No need to eat anywhere else. It is absolutely the best place to stay to explore the surrounding area as it is like coming home to a welcoming family after a tiring but joyful day out. We have booked in again for next year.

“A very pleasant stay”

Hotel Kalehan

After a long day of sightseeing in extremely high temperatures, the Hotel Kalehan truly was refreshing. Beautiful rose gardens, an inviting pool with bar, impeccable decor, and a gracious staff all greet the weary traveler. Sometimes it's the oddest things that make a difference. Swinging in a hammock, after dining on some of the best food we had in Turkey (in the hotel's air conditioned dining room) while looking up at the night sky and reflecting on the wonderous nearby site of Ephesus, capped off a perfect day. Our air conditioned triple room with three beds was small but adequate. The hotel is within walking distance to nearby shops, convenient for stocking up on provisions for the day ahead. The frent desk staff was very helpful and provided an excellent map for touring Selcuk and Ephesus.

“Great Hospitality and Food!”

Hotel Kalehan

I have to admit that I was apprehensive about my trip to Turkey. I did not know what to expect in terms of the hotel, food or reception. What a surprise when we found the Hotel Kalehan to have polite and helpful staff, wonderful food and clean, comfy rooms.
The hotel staff tended to our every need, and went out of the way to make our stay pleasant. A fire in the fireplace each evening, and Turkish coffee or an after-dinner drink was just right.
The food was, for me, the biggest surprise. A healthy breakfast with breads, hard-boiled eggs, fresh olives, cheese was very European. Lunch and dinner ranged from fresh fish, to kabob, to pasta.
The hotel owner, Hakan Ergir, is friendly and helped us to arrange a tour guide.
Internet access in the hotel lobby helped us stay in contact with family in the States. The hotel is close to ancient Ephesus (the large Citadel looms on the Ayasuluk Hill, just behind the hotel).
I am planning to return to Selcuk again this year to see our new friends at Hotel Kalehan.
The rates are very reasonable.

The hotel is in a lovely building with a beautiful rose garden and relaxing pool area. Rooms are small but nicely decorated.

We had dinner in the hotel restaurant one night and had a wonderful meal unfortunately the next evening we ordered the set menu which was a very bland, disappointing and over priced meal.

For the prices the hotel is charging and as its location outside the main part of town the hotel should offer free transfers to the bus station and to Ephesus rather than offering to order taxis with fixed, over priced rates.

The hotel also did not offer a 10% discount when paying by cash.

Management Response
SelcukHotel, owner
(Management representative)

Being a small family hotel, we do appreciate all the reviews since we are constantly trying to improve our service and standards. This year our pool has been renovated and we have a new menu and new kitchen preparing dishes only with local grown products and our own stone mill pressed olive oil.
But we would like to clarify the taxi issue here. We call taxi whenever our guests ask for it and we do not have any relation with the taxi prices.(we provide a free lift for our guests to nearby places whenever our hotel car is available) Taxi rates are determined by the taxi association of the town. Please note that in Turkey, taxis are more expensive in smaller towns compared to cities because of the turnover difference.

“Overpriced”

Kalehan is a fairly pleasant individual hotel located on the main road into Selcuk. Rooms are a good size, nicely decorated and arranged around a nice garden. However for the price, especially when compared with similar hotels in Turkey, the standard is not high. Our room was slightly dirty (door handle, key and surfaces were sticky to the touch), bathroom was very small and breakfast buffet was left uncovered for several hours; empty plates were not replenished. Swimming pool had no water in it, despite the fact that it was 25 degrees and prices had already been hiked to mid-season levels. We asked for brewed coffee instead of nescafe with breakfast and found afterwards that 5 euros had been added to our bill for this ´extra´. Nice enough, but could have been so much better with some attention to the details.
