I stayed for two nights at this supposedly 5 star hotel, but it really doesn't deserve that ranking.
We should have recognized the omens from the beginning -- we booked via the hotel website, including a couple of requests and questions in the designated section in the web booking form. They responded with a room confirmation, but without answering our questions or confirming what type of room (we had requested twin beds). We e-mailed them back, asking them to confirm twin beds and answer our question, but they wrote back in terrible English without giving any answers! When I subsequently called the reservations department, a very unhelpful woman told me that there weren't any rooms with twin beds for the dates we booked -- to which I responded "then why did you confirm our booking?" This was followed by a none-too-pleasant back and forth, with her telling me that they would get back to us (they never did -- I had to call back again twice) and asking me how on earth would they make a twin room out of a double?! I responded that that wasn't really my problem. Anyway, end of story, we got our twin room (it was simply a double room where they had separated the bed into two singles -- really a big deal for them, obviously!)
The room was aesthetically the standard of a 3 star hotel. We were in a Siam room (the older wing) -- I don't know what the Shangri-La rooms are like. Each twin bed had only one old, bobbly, thin blanket. There were no spare blankets supplied in the room. I called down to housekeeping at 10pm, who told me they would bring more blankets straightaway. 3 more calls and half an hour later, the blankets finally arrived.
The buttons on the telephone to call direct to housekeeping, room service, reception, etc. did not work, so we had to press "0" and wait on hold before getting through to the operator and finally being put through to the correct department, every time we needed anything.
The toilet roll holder in the bathroom was broken, so we had to put the paper next to the sink and it kept getting splashed each time we used the sink.
The furniture was obviously old, and being wicker, the drawers were difficult to open. One was stuck closed, and we couldn't use it at all.
The plastic shelves in the mini fridge were broken, so every time we opened the fridge door, the large glass bottle of water that they had supplied with the room (ahh, a plus at last!!) kept on rolling out on to the floor.
The service was also substandard -- and we there during low season. Goodness knows what they're like during the summer months! When we ordered room service (two simple cold cheese and salmon platters -- how much work is required for that?!), it took 55 minutes to arrive. Then, the guy who brought the food asked US how much we should be paying (!!), as room service had not given him a bill. He then asked ME to call down to room service and ask them how much we should pay!! A short argument ensued, with the porter saying we should be adding a service charge, and the room service people on the phone saying there shouldn't be. We resolved it in the end (without the surcharge) but then we felt so bad, we gave the porter a nice tip!
They didn't come to clean our room until 3pm, when we were already back in our room resting, so we had to sit on the balcony until they'd finished, which wasn't fun.
I would not recommend the food at the poolside bar -- I'm sure the hot dogs contained copious amounts of bacteria, as they seemed to be sitting in tepid water, in the sun, for hours on end. Plus they don't bring it to your sunbed -- you have to "come back in 10 minutes" and then wait there for another 10-15 until it's ready.
On the plus side, we had a nice balcony with a partial sea/pool view, which had sun on it for most of the day. The reception staff certainly were helpful and friendly. And breakfast was pretty much your average Israeli hotel breakfast buffet - pretty good.
I would recommend staying here only if you get some kind of deal -- it isn't worth the 5 star rates they charge.
