We have just returned from a week at Breakas Beach Resort in Vanuatu staying in a beach front fare.
What a lovely location and what a beautiful spot for a private, quiet beach resort. The fact that there are no children under 15 allowed just added to the sheer tranquility of the resort.
The infinity edge pool is picturesque but although it says 'swim up bar' the bar is on the other side to the acual seats in the pool....
Our problems started with the food and level of service in the restaurant which got gradually worse throughout our stay. Bearing in mind that it rained for nearly our entire stay we thought we would eat breakfast (as this was included), lunch and sometimes dinner in the resort.
Every morning at breakfast we had to ask continuously for tea or coffee sometimes never to receive it, the fruit had flies all over it despite the food covers which were not big enough to cover the entire plates, the pastries were likewise covered in flies and there were quite often dead flies floating in the orange juice!
At lunch the same menu was trotted out day after day which if you didn't fancy chips was a problem! Quite often the order was forgotten or when it arrived was inedible. The wait staff were clearly extremely inexperienced and untrained and not able to cope with more than two covers at any one time. Added to this frustration the prices that were being charged for the food were outrageous for the low quality that we continuosly received.
For dinner one evening my husband chose the 'special' that was a tuna dish with pasta and polenta. After an extraordinarily long wait the polenta came out without the tuna.....When we asked the wait staff where the tuna was they said it was coming separately. They then arrived with two pieces of tuna on a saucer! There was never any sign of the pasta. They charged over $28 AUD for what wasa tasteless and badly presented and served meal.
Having eaten in other restaurants in Vanuatu I was assured that the standard of service and food was not comparative in the least to what we experienced at Breakas. All the other restaurants we tried had exceptional service and the quality of the food was exquisite and in some cases cheaper than at Breakas.
As for the bar......after arriving back at Breakas one evening we fancied a drink. It was just gone 9:30pm on a Friday but were told that we couldn't have one as the bar was closed. The previous night the bar had remained open until just after 10pm, the night before 10:15pm....we never were sure of the actual closing time but sure enough if you had wanted a drink at 8am you could have got one!!!
In general our stay was marred by the staff who were easily distracted, under trained and certainly not experienced. Although friendly we could not guarantee that any request would be followed through adequately.
We gave some of our feedback to a passing travel agent who was eating there one evening.....
Sorry Breakas, I think you have all the ingredients for a fantastic resort. The rooms were fantastic and always maintained well by the cleaning staff but this resort is seriously let down by the food and the rest of the staff.
