“Food Menus!”

Breakas Beach Resort & Villas

May 10, 2008

We have just returned from a week at Breakas Beach Resort in Vanuatu staying in a beach front fare.
What a lovely location and what a beautiful spot for a private, quiet beach resort. The fact that there are no children under 15 allowed just added to the sheer tranquility of the resort.
The infinity edge pool is picturesque but although it says 'swim up bar' the bar is on the other side to the acual seats in the pool....
Our problems started with the food and level of service in the restaurant which got gradually worse throughout our stay. Bearing in mind that it rained for nearly our entire stay we thought we would eat breakfast (as this was included), lunch and sometimes dinner in the resort.
Every morning at breakfast we had to ask continuously for tea or coffee sometimes never to receive it, the fruit had flies all over it despite the food covers which were not big enough to cover the entire plates, the pastries were likewise covered in flies and there were quite often dead flies floating in the orange juice!
At lunch the same menu was trotted out day after day which if you didn't fancy chips was a problem! Quite often the order was forgotten or when it arrived was inedible. The wait staff were clearly extremely inexperienced and untrained and not able to cope with more than two covers at any one time. Added to this frustration the prices that were being charged for the food were outrageous for the low quality that we continuosly received.
For dinner one evening my husband chose the 'special' that was a tuna dish with pasta and polenta. After an extraordinarily long wait the polenta came out without the tuna.....When we asked the wait staff where the tuna was they said it was coming separately. They then arrived with two pieces of tuna on a saucer! There was never any sign of the pasta. They charged over $28 AUD for what wasa tasteless and badly presented and served meal.
Having eaten in other restaurants in Vanuatu I was assured that the standard of service and food was not comparative in the least to what we experienced at Breakas. All the other restaurants we tried had exceptional service and the quality of the food was exquisite and in some cases cheaper than at Breakas.
As for the bar......after arriving back at Breakas one evening we fancied a drink. It was just gone 9:30pm on a Friday but were told that we couldn't have one as the bar was closed. The previous night the bar had remained open until just after 10pm, the night before 10:15pm....we never were sure of the actual closing time but sure enough if you had wanted a drink at 8am you could have got one!!!
In general our stay was marred by the staff who were easily distracted, under trained and certainly not experienced. Although friendly we could not guarantee that any request would be followed through adequately.
We gave some of our feedback to a passing travel agent who was eating there one evening.....
Sorry Breakas, I think you have all the ingredients for a fantastic resort. The rooms were fantastic and always maintained well by the cleaning staff but this resort is seriously let down by the food and the rest of the staff.

My Partner and I recently enjoyed a short stay at Breaka's, as we were in Port Villa to look at a property that we were interested in purchasing.

We can not speak highly enough of the experience, from the moment we were picked up from the airport you could tell that the "personal touch" to their service was going to make for a great time.

Upon arrival at Breaka's we were both overwhelmed by how freindly and helpfull the staff were. Just walking through the front reception and over looking the pool and pristine bay you could really tell this was a special place.

Our room was absolutely gorgeous and the traditional beach-hut really sets the mood of the enviroment and yet still feels like your staying in luxury.

The food was absolutley beautiful and reasonably priced, and the service was from the staff was fantastic. Most importantly - the local beer was awesome and they cocktails were amoung the best we've ever had. Just sitting at the bar relaxing of an afternoon, watching the sunset was so enjoyable and we remember saying to ourselves "that we didn't want to ever leave"...

A big THANKYOU to George for making us feel so welcome it was trully much appreciated, and big thankyou to Mike also, for taking the time to sit down and tell me about all the local surf breaks and the best spots to get a wave! Hope to get out for a paddle with ya' next time we're over there.

Can't wait til next time!!

Just what you expect and want from a resort...No exaggeration!
There is plenty of space, fantastic beach, gorgeous pool, friendly staff, great bar, more than enough lounging areas, great food (could do with more seafood options) Great location, plenty of sun & fun..

We went to Pango village our guide worked at breakas, walked us down for a special little private tour through the village, saw how everyone lives, went to church easter sunday for service, a different experience, we are not at all churchie but to hear the singing and to pay some respect whilst staying in their village was great to do.

The bar and staff was a welcoming place to hang at night, didn't need to go any where else considering we were only staying for 3 nights before going onto Tanna. Of course not long enough but we will go back without a doubt once our pockets allow.

Beds super big ( king ). Fares well kept, clean and very comfortable, with more amenities than expected.

Gardens beautiful, Restaraunt yummy food and great dining position, can even request your table on the beach front for that romantic private dinner.

Went to Paradise Cove for dinner and to check out resort, resort lovely but nothing on breakas, Dinner was very nice and worth the effort to go some where different.

Manager and owner helpful and usually around to assist in requests. Staff fantastic! Alfred thanks for warm chats and entertainment at the bar. Yummy cocktails. Management should look after you your worth your weight in gold, fantastic hospitality staff member.
Any one who complains of the service in other reviews just can't relax and need to unwind, you are supposed to be on an island holiday or don't bother stay at home, other guests could do without you're grizzles.

My only regret I accidently deleted all my photos once on Tanna of our stay in Villa, what a dill, cried for an hour.

Keep up the great work everyone.
If we could afford it we would be back on the plane tomorrow
to come stay again, for much longer, perhaps we might even get married there next time.

Bummer to hear about your photos. If anyone is going to Tanna be sure to take an extra battery and flash card as you will turn into a shutter bug nut!
Too many people also shoot the volcano too soon so once it gets dark the card is full and you're tempted to delete some earlier pics and presto! Good bye all your Vila shots... Believe me it is easy to do in all the excitement of sitting next to a live volcano!

Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and I must apologize about the seafood situation in Vanuatu but once the fishermen have enough money to get by they don't fish. This is a problem for us but a blessing for them as they aren't on the dreadmill like most of us when it comes to money. We could all take a leaf out of their book.

Cheers again and hope to see you back soon.

I say at breaks with my wife over the new year & Xmas time
the place is self is amazing & sand on your toes as you walk out or your fare wow is all we can say.

service
Breakas lacks some service but over all the staff are very helpfull But I do feel as there was no managment in place it was like the local running the resort as managment drink at the bar.
& a chef running around trying to help all the guest needs which we found amazing.
Food
we found the food at Breakas diffrent every day even the chef cooked for us without a menu with a small group of other people staying in the resort. Food was out of this world.
I have seen other review & i can't understand were they are coming from. the service needs work But I feel it was the manager temper towards the staff which caused alot of unhappy guest. But was as good as any were in Australia if not better

Managment
there was no managerment but a beach bom trying to impress me with how good he is & keep look at my wife
the own of the resort was a big help when he was not deals with local issues

Vanuatu

Vanuatu is one of the best place to come to for the people are so frendly & open. there is not much to do but we did not come to the place but to relax & enjoy our week away.

Thanks for your review .

So stoked you enjoyed your stay with us and that I left an impression on you and your wife. I remember she was interested in my French and native language skills and general knowledge of the islands, please pass on my regards.

I sincerely hope you did not mistake my charisma and extrovert personality as an advance on your wife, I intended nothing of the sort. I am told I can come across a bit flirtatious at times and if that was the case then it's always best to say something if you are ill at ease. Sorry about that. Friends? Good...no hard feelings.

I shall pass on your kind words to the team here at Breakas about the good food and service. I'll work on the bad management!

Just returned from 10 days in Vanuatu, of which we spent 5 nights at Breakas Beach Resort. My boyfriend and I got a helicopter transfer from the airport and arrived in style after a 5 minute scenic trip over the small town of Port Vila (cost about $300 and they organised it). Simon, our pilot, landed us next to the resort right next to the beach where we received a welcome drink from the manager whilst the staff got our room together.

Simply put, we were blown away!! Right in the sand on the beach we had the most spectacular view of the ocean as well as the sunset. Ask if you can have fare number 34. Someone on this site mentioned that they found the rooms lacked privacy, I have to disagree they were perfect. Also, the verandah was ideal for enjoying a drink or star gazing in the evening. Absolutely magical!

The staff were the sweetest group of people you would ever meet. By the time we left we felt like a part of the family. They can be a little slow if you are used to fast service in Auckland but you soon slow down and get into the groove.

The food the first day was average – chefs away maybe? It must have been an off day because the rest of the stay it was great, we also ventured five minutes up the road by bus to Ambrosia ($1.50 each way, much better than the taxis which are falling apart) and it was French and delicious with the funniest waiter in town.

I thought there would be a speed boat as I love to water ski and jet ski and there were neither. The snorkeling (in front of the resort) was simply spectacular. I had never seen coral and fish so vivid and this was not our first trip to Vanuatu. We took a trip around the island of Efate (Vate?) and it was a bit disappointing, really rough road and a lot of the scenery looks the same. It is also a lot hotter here in February than June when we last visited.

There are other activities you can participate in, i.e. village visit, scuba diving, reef walk, art discovery and even some kites!? Go fly a kite, funny. There is a surf break in front of beach but no surf boards, my boyfriend had to rent one in the village up the road and said it was as bad as the taxis! So bring your own board if you plan on surfing.

Our 5 days went very quickly – off to another resort we went, not so good but that's another story. We were very sad to say farewell to our Pango friends and I thought their "Welcome Home" logo was a bit cheesy when we arrived but not now. We'll be back to see Mike and Breakas later in the year. A fantastic holiday!
