We stayed 8 nights in a beautiful garden fare at Breakas and overall had a fantastic holiday in Vanuatu, probably because we chose the right place to stay for us.
Our first impressions of the Breakas resort were not good - we were hoping there was more to it than just the "infinity pool" plastered over all the brouchures. Our transfer from the airport dropped some people off at the impressive La Legon Resort first so we had high expectations. Further down the road, the bus stopped and U-turned in a building site of unfinished rooms (not part of the resort....thankfully). And then there were no porters or welcome to meet us and we had to hunt around the reception area until some one turned up.
Our view of the resort slowly improved over the next few days. Our first time in a 'boutique' hotel and the absence of children was truely relaxing - even though we were missing our own wee one. A visit back to a child infested La Legon Resort made us realise we happy to have a break from that environment.
The fare's were beautifully built and comfortable. Our rooms were always made up nicely each day. The staff were happy and friendly. Very efficient and helpful when we booked other day trips or offering information. The beach front was nice for a bare foot stroll along the sand and quite good snorkling when the tide was in although a little choppy if windy. The restaurant was excellent and served a good range of meals including bar snacks. And the infinity pool did look pretty impressive - although it was a bit cooler than the sea water temperature. We met some very nice couples also staying there, although the place was private enough if you didn't want to be bothered meeting any one.
Gripes.... Haven't many. I read JenTR's earlier report on this forum. And there still wasn't much in the way of water sports activities - only fins & snorkles. No kayaks as implied.
Bar closed at 9pm - so stock up on the duty free (much cheaper also !!!)
The fares are beautiful but have no cooking facilities, only a fridge and a kettle which does limit you if you don't feel like eating out all the time.
The place is called breakas for a reason !! It cop's a lot of wind from the east, which can make snorkling impossible and sitting on the beach colder than you would think. On windy days we found shelter in some other resorts in the lee of the wind. It could be quite noisy at night with the wind ripping through the trees above and the crashing waves on the beach. Bring some earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
We found it very easy to travel around. The local 'buses' are by far, the most efficient and cheap way to go, and a nice way to see some local places of Port Vila you might have missed as it drops people off.
From what we saw of some of the other resorts on offer around Port Vila, we would rate breaka in the top 3 easily. Not too big, not too small, in a good location (apart from the wind) and nice setting. It suited us for the relaxing holiday we wanted.
Cheers
