We lucked out at this hotel because for us it had everything that we needed including a large varied breakfast (both Egyptian and Western choices), a shuttle to the city center (Maadi is about 15 minutes away by car/taxi), a swimming pool, and a view of the Step and Red Pyramids.
Pros
+ Shuttle to City Center
+ Great Attentive Staff
+ Maadi has so many good restaurants within 5-10 minute walking distance
+ Supermarket next door
+ You can charter a felucca ride (go across the main street to the river side, and walk North or South for 5 minutes - make sure you walk down to the pier and ask the boat owner directly. DO NOT ask the middle man sitting on the sidewalk who usually gives the boat driver nothing).
+ Large and varied breakfast
+ Pool scene that caters to westerners
Cons
- Shabby and outdated
- Bathrooms could use some updating
- Cigarette smell that was ingrained in everything in the hotel
- More expensive than surrounding restaurants, but also of very high quality
- Attempted to cheat us in checkout with our change (count the change over)
- Concierge (for the most part) was concerned with the kickback from 'ordering' a 'taxi' (taxis are a dime a dozen in Maadi - just go out and flag one yourself and negotiate!)
- Reception is pretty awful
Like most hotels of this persuasion, the hotel is a bit grungy, smelly from all the cigarette smoke, and dirty. However, don't let that stop you from enjoying Cairo. Cairo is a magnificent city, and Maadi itself is a neat place to hang out. There are several nice restaurants across the street on the river side (walk South about 10 minutes for a TGIF, asian restaurant, egyptian restaurant, etc.).
Be also careful about a few things which we experienced first hand. Some people do not like foreigners/Americans. We found metal shavings in our food one night at one of the best known Egyptian-cuisine restaurants. Another time, our cab driver was on speed and was driving recklessly. We got out after seeing him yelling with his head out the window and running red lights. We got another cab a minute later.
A place to find a decent travel agent to book pyramid itineraries or other things is across from the Egyptian Museum (soon to be the old Egyptian Museum) in Tahrir Square where several streets meet. Make sure *not* to pay prior to completing your journey - you may be asked for a small down payment to demonstrate your good faith. If you want to spend a lot of time at the pyramids (Gize-only), you can take a taxi one-way, spend the time that you want, and get a taxi there back to your hotel. Giza is well developed and you'll easily find taxis there - many taxi drivers might tell you that you need to hire a taxi and take it for a half/whole day but you do not. However, if you go with a tour company, you can get a guide that will be able to explain everything to you. The guide should have a valid certificate - ask them to show you. One 'guide' we had knew less than what I could recall from 6th grade!
