“Amazing time!”

We have just returned from a wonderful week at the Sofitel Karnak! The hotel was magnificent, immaculately clean, friendly staff and the architecture was stunning! We couldn't of asked for a more beautiful, friendly, clean and amazing hotel, honestly. With a huge array of activities, a large choice in resteraunts and the most beautiful pools I've ever seen it'll make you happy every day you chose this hotel. Although there was a few problems...
Vegetarians; being a lacto-ovo Vegetarian, there was very limited choice. Almost all of the dishes were meat based. But just ask the staff and they are only too happy to oblige and provide you with a meal you'd like, for a very reasonable price. The hotel water is very very over priced! 12LE when you can get it from any supermarket (theres one right outside the hotel) for about 3LE. My husband and I found that the buffet got a little repetitive (the themed nights just... aren't, lol.) but the food is nice, but lukewarm. It gave us a few tummy upsets after a while. The hotel bus and boat is brilliantly handy too, but the last bus leaves Luxor at 7.30 so if you decide to stay past that, be prepared to barter for a taxi, although generally very reasonable prices. You get hassle the second you step off the boat/bus continually for your whole trip into Luxor, so beware. I'd recommend a good portable hand sanitiser as most Egyptians keep their money in their socks. :) Also, be prepared for tips. Everybody from the airport to the hotel will want a tip from you (and even in the hotel and in Luxor!), so I recommend being prepared with some smaller LE for that purpose :) We teamed up with another couple in our two visits to Luxor and believe me, this is for the best. Women especially, make sure you travel with at least one man. :) But don't worry! It's a brilliant experience. All in all, the staff were lovely, the hotel was magnificent, they turn on your air con before you even arrive so that your room is a perfect temperature for you arriving, the rooms are a little dark but to be honest, this helps keep the room nice and cool, we saw no problem at all with this and we adored the room we had! Especially half way through our holiday housekeeping made our bedsheets into the shape of swans :) The balcony is quite small but had a lovely little chair set were we could watch Karnak going about it's business every day :) My husband and I enjoyed this holiday so much and we're really saddened it's over now. I'd recommend this hotel to anybody! Any questions, just contact me!

“Relaxing and Hassle free”

Sofitel Karnak Luxor

Jun 17, 2008

Staff were excellent. From cleaning staff to management. All genuinely polite and courteous. Could not do enough for you. Only snag is that they should have an on-site pharmacy. Though nothing too serious (ocassional insect bite), popped into local store to the left on exit of the hotel, Elasil Supermarket, run by a very pleasant and helpful guy, Youssef. Totally went out of his way to help me.

“Great for relaxing”

Sofitel Karnak Luxor

Just come back from having spent the last week of May @ this hotel. I had a very good time as it was my intention to just chill 4 the whole period. There is so much culture and history in Luxor that I did not achieve that. Our room was a little dark. The airconditioning unit worked excellently & the room was thoroughtly cleaned every day. The cleaner always returned to make sure everything was OK and made sure we had whatever we asked 4. The service we received from our tour rep was over and above anything expected. The hotel surrounds were lovely and tranquil. We booked on a B&B basis and breakfast was excellent. We mainly lunched at the pool side restaurant which had a very limited menu, but the food was good. The poolside attendants worked very very hard indeed. All the hotel staff were very helpful. We 8 out at mainly excellent locations bcos we were escorted by local Egyptians. Did 2 trips, the horse and carriage tour of Luxor, which is so beautiful by night. & the Valley of the Kings. That day the temp was 102 degrees in the shade & there was no shade @ the Valley of the Kings. Both my friend & I ended up with funny tummy. My friend more so than I. She blamed the water, but I drank way much more than her. I put it down 2 my medication. All in all I had an excellent time. I found the poverty so very distrubing. I almost cried. But they get by anyway. I liked it so much I am going back. Real soon 2.

“loved the setting”

we have just come back from staying 2 weeks, & we had a super time, the hotel is amazing, as the gardens & pools, the staff are all very friendly, & cannot do enough for you, the food was excellant, always a varied choise, our room we had was a little on the small size, & a bit dark, but was cleaned daily, again our cleaner checked now &again if everything was okay. the weather was exceptionaly hot, we were told that the weather we were having was julys weather, 45 in the shade most days, we could only sit in the sun for a few hours, having the pool, was ace, to cool off. a must when visitng Luxor, is to go to the valley of the kings, queens, workers tombs, luxor & karnak temples, Cairo was amazing, we booked all our trips through Jollys, which is situated right by the winter palace in Luxor, we chose them, because through trip advisor, this company was recomended,& boy did they live up to it, we saved approx £160 on all 3 trips, Cario was only £120 for the day & lunch, guide, & all transport included, we flew, took about 45 mins, cario museum was amazing, so many artifacts, & more not on show. King Tut's exhibition was fantastic. moving on to the area,in Luxor, we found that because the locals are so poor (but happy) with what they have, always pestered the tourists, this did get on your nerves, it was a lot worse here than tunisia, so we did not venture out from hotel much on our own, we could not walk anywhere out side the hotel, as it was on the outskirts of Luxor, so on rest days from excursions, we stayed within the hotel grounds. there are a lot of tourist police everywhere you go. a taxi in to luxor was about 25LE (£2.50) but we used the courtesy bus from the hotel which ran through the day, you could also get the courtesy boat attached to the hotel, going up the nile. Luxor has so much history attached to it, & we learnt so much & took so many pics, amazing place, shame about the pestering though. we tipped those we felt gave really good sevice ie 20LE (£2.00) for pool attendent, who always made sure we had a sun bed, towels etc was free, 30LE (£3.00) for cleaner & 20LE for a few waiters, this may not seem a lot to us, bit to the local working it is a lot, as their wages are so low, they rely on tips, so those locals were more than happy with what we gave them.
this was rated egyptian 5* but we reckon it was more upmarket 3-4*,on the whole a smashing holiday, but would not go back in may time again, apparently winter time is best & a lot cooler.
