“Great Game Drives. Camp is wearing a bit.”

Mara Intrepids Club

3 of 5 stars
Nairobi, Kenya
Jul 21, 2008

Check in was done quickly. As we have stayed at the camp many times before, we did not hang around for the check in brief, and instead headed to our tents – 5 & 6. Tents 1-12 are on the left side of reception, while 12A – 30 are on the right side after you walk pass the dining room. Next to the dining room is a bar and seating area on an outdoor deck overlooking the Talek River.

The tents have been done up, and look good. They are on raised platforms, located in clusters of 4’s. Each tent has a deck overlooking the Talek River (we had a male hippo in a pool in the river in front of our tents. The river levels are low). Each deck has 2 safari chairs and coffee tables.

The tents have a traditional zipped entrance. Inside you will find a cupboard meant to house a mini fridge (our cupboard was empty), either a double bed, or 2 singles, a writing desk and chair, a dressing table with a stool, a wardrobe, and 2 luggage stands. There is plenty of space to keep clothes, etc. The bed was comfortable, with blankets (not duvets), and is a four poster bed draped in mosquito nets.

The bathroom is part of the bedroom, with a twin vanity in the middle. On one side is a toilet (behind a door), and the other side an enclosed shower with a rain shower head. Hot water is available from 5:30 am – 8:30 am, and 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. It is heated by wood.

The tents are comfortable, although located too close to one another. You could see from our tent into the tent next door, and you can hear conversations, etc.

The day on Safari is long. You get either tea/coffee/hot chocolate and cookies delivered to your tent in the morning with your wake up call. You depart for safari at 6:30 am, and come back at 8:30 am for a cooked buffet breakfast. Then head back out again at 10:30 am, and back at 12:30 pm for a buffet lunch. Afternoon tea is served at 3:00 pm, before you head out again at 3:30 pm, and back at 6:30 pm. Canapés are served by the bar, and then dinner is served at 7:30 pm.

We used to have our wake up at 5:30 am, and made a point of departing by 6:00 am. We always carried breakfast boxes with us, so we could spend a full morning out on a game drive, as the wildebeest migration was on, the cats were a plenty, and we did not want to miss out on any action. I am not a huge fan of breakfast boxes as they contain too much bread. We made a request for boxes with boiled eggs, chicken sandwiches, bacon, sausage, yoghurt, fruit and some bread. We got what we asked for, and were very happy. The kitchen also packs tea/coffee/hot chocolate.

We would stay out of safari until around 12:30 pm, when we would get back to camp. We had 3 lunches at camp, and were disappointed that the food did not really change. There was always a vegetable soup (all tasted the same), then a good salad bar (the variety did not change), a roasted meat, stir fried vegetables and stir fried meat (always beef), a cheese board, margarita pizza, bruschetta, garlic bread, fruit platters and desert from the kitchen. It sounds good, but tasted the same for 3 days, and was very different to what used to happen here a year ago. The kitchen ran out of our desert choice on two different days. Lunch also used to be served outdoors, but is now served in the main dining area.

We then headed out for a game drive at 3:00 pm, and always carried a cooler box of our favorite drinks for sun downers. Both evenings we got back to camp at around 7:00 pm. A quick shower and we were at pre-dinner drinks by 7:30 pm. The canapés on both evenings were finished by the time we got there. Dinner was in the dining room, and the room was way too bright with little atmosphere. The menu consisted of a choice of starter, soup, main course, desert (and cheese if you had room left), tea/coffee. On the first night there was a salmon starter which came to the table frozen, so that was sent back. The soup tasted the same as lunch. The main course was good (steak/chicken/fish), but they ran out of choices the both nights. We would order desert at the same time as our mains to make sure they would not run out.

The camp was reasonably full, but the staff did struggle with service.

“An out of season taste of Africa”

Mara Intrepids Club

May 17, 2008

My husband and I were supposed to travel to the Mara in January but due to the problems there and flight issues we travelled in April, which is out of season. The staff at the Mara Intrepids could not do enough for us, and I really think this is how they genuinely are. Even though there were only 8 of us there at one point, the food was excellent and the coffee to die for. The tents are clean with a real sense of outdoors, and if you can get tents 27,28, 29, 30 you will be sure to see some animals wondering near the perimeter fence after six o'clock during your stay. Our driver Vincent was brilliant. A wealth of knowledge not only about the animals but also the birds, which are many. Out of Season was somehow nice to travel in because, albeit a bit chilly in the mornings, we had such a contrast of scenery and the animals a one to one car approach, we were only ones with 3 lionesses and 5 cubs - amazing. I would definitely recommend the mara intrepids.

“My kind of tent camping!”

What a fabulous resort! The tents were outstanding! I won't camping in a regular old tent anymore. These tents had hardwood floors, four poster beds, beautiful shower stalls, granite countertops. They turned down your ed at night, put in a hot water bottle while you were at dinner and woke you up in the morning with coffee/tea and cookies! Truly felt spoiled.
The wildlife outside the resort was amazing. We saw an abundance of wildlife - so many different varieties.

“Highlight of our trip”

We stayed here for several days in August as part of our safari in Tanzania and Kenya. Wonderful place, definitely a highlight in a trip of many high points.

Our tent was well isolated from other tents, overlooking a small river that we could hear hippos in at night. Furnishings and service were excellent. Meals are served in a large open-sided pavillion, with good quality and variety. Bushbabies coming to steal rolls off of bread plates are nightliy entertainment. At night the staff brings a hot water bottle by to warm your bed, and comes by early in the morning before your first game drive with your choice of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

There were three game drives daily. Guides and vehicles were excellent. Coming from Tanzania where we had a private vehicle, having to share made it a little cramped in the vehicles but it was ok. It was a pleasure to get to know our fellow travelers. If you ask, you can arrange in advance with your guide to have breakfast on the savannah after your morning game drive and then continue directly on to your late-morning drive instead of returning to camp. I highly recommend this! Not only is breakfast our in the open wonderful, but the guide can take you farther from camp to see wildlife.

Overall, wildlife viewing in the Mara (and general scenery) were the best on our trip. Lots of big cats and vast quantities of wildlife in general.

One downside is that while the game drives can make it to the Mara river it is a long haul and best done if you have breakfast on the road. This is too bad because the Mara river is where you can see some of the most spectacular wildebeeste crossings (which, unfortunately, we never saw).

“Not as good as the Samburu Intrepids”

Mara Intrepids Club

Jan 14, 2008

We booked this as part of a package designed for kids. Unfortunalty we couldnt do the Nairobi bit due to the troubles. Previously staying at the far superior Sambuu Intrepids. The place was OK but they hadn't booked us into a family tent as requested so we had to wait till after 2:30 for someone else to leave. In fairness they did move the stuff for us but I didn't want to unpack in mid afternoon. We decided to use the pool while waiting as we were all hot and needed a cool down, big mistake it was filthy and after half an hour all our new swimwear and hair was green. This didnt come out with washing so I complained to the reception and asked them to wash it all at their expense which they did and they did manage to reduce the greeness. All this meant the kids did not go to the Adventure club as planned. The Adventures club times did not fit well with game drives either so they only went once which is a shame as the kids loved it at Samburu. The tents we eventually stayed in was 1 & 2 these are conjoined, a twin tent for the kids and a double for the parents both with huge showers and toilet, and a large tunnel connecting them. These tents are fab and mean you all feel safe together. No 1 & 2 are a long walk to the dining room etc but has the added attraction of having a hippo and croc resident outside in the river. This makes up for the walk. The hippo sounded like it was doing bombs in the water all night we wondered when it was ever going to get out to eat it was having such a great time. They did kids meals which our two chose only because the other stuff was very, very fancy mixing fruit ,veg and salad together. They also didnt want 4 courses. The puds on the kids menu were no big deal so on the second day I asked if they could choose of the main menu which they allowed us to do. So ask. No kids menu at Samburu Intrepids and I think the Mara did beat it on food but nothing else.
We also enjoyed sitting around the fire at night looking at the stars.
The place was not very busy because of the troubles so we had the Mara nearly to ourselves we saw 4 of the big 5 just missing out on Rhino but as we had seen 2 White and 3 Black Rhino at the Ol Pejeta conservancy before we didnt care and disuaded our driver from spending time trying to find them so we could look for other game.
This place would have got more * had it not been for visiting two other superior friendlier camps. The public areas are a bit shabby in places but I would imagine being in the Mara well used.
We did have a great time despite all my negative comments.
Also please both Intepids what about cold water. Why do you have to pay to get cold water?
See my other reviews for Samburu Intrepids and Rhino Camp at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
