Where do i start! We stayed at the Reef Hotel back in 1996 and it was pretty decent then therefore i thought i would try it again while i was in Mombasa on business. This turned out to be a big mistake. The first sign that this wasn't going to be a pleasnt stay was at check in where i was told that they did not have a record of my reservation which i had made over the phone a few day earlier! Luckly September is low season therefore i managed to get a room......
The room itself looked like it had not been redecorated since 1996! The bathroom was another disaster area and i suddenly felt depressed about the whole situation, my only consolation was that i would only have to use the room at night.
After regrouping from the check in and room disaters i decided to tour the hotel grounds and things did not get any better. The place requires some serious decoration work, the whole place lacked atmosphere and the only good thing about the hotel was the beach and views of the Indian Ocean. The food lacked imagination. After 2 nights i had had enough of the place and i decide to transfer to the Nyali Beach Hotel (see separate review) which is about 5 minutes away.
There are some very good hotels in Mombasa unfortunately the Reef Hotel isn't one of them. Avoid at all costs.
