I was at the Beijing Jinglun Hotel a couple of weeks ago. Despite some very nice things about this hotel, I still have mixed feelings about it. Let me start with the good. The best thing about this Hotel is the location. Since it is located near the center of the City (close to the Tiananmen, Forbidden City), several of the attractions in Beijing are readily accessible. It is about 5-10 minutes walk from the Silk Market and is about 5 mins walk from the China World Hotel. If you're up to it, you can probably briskly walk to the Forbidden city in less than 30 mins. The locations is very ideal. You'll appreciate the location especially when you're taking a taxi and the driver immediately knows where your hotel is.
When I checked-in, I requested for a new room (as was advised in this
site previously). I was informed by the front desk staff that all the
rooms have now been completely renovated. So there is no need to specify that you want a newly-renovated room. The rooms and hotel facilities are quite good.
The breakfast buffet was about average. After two days of eating breakfast there, however, I didn't feel like eating the same food again. So I just skipped it.
The thing that really turned me off with this hotel was the language skills of the staff. Most of the front desk staff could hardly understand english. Same with the concierge. I was making a very simple request with the front desk (I wanted to leave a message for someone who was coming in that day), but it took me about 15 mins to explain it to them. I wasn't even sure if they actually understood me. Also, after my first night, I informed the front desk that the aircondining in my room wasn't working properly. It wasn't as cold as I wanted it to be (the controls seemed to be not working). The lady at the desk told me that, since it was still Spring, the hotel airconditioning was not yet made to fully function. She suggested that I open the windows the following night. Since my room was right in front of the main street, I did not think that that was an option (dusty and noisy). For the price I was paying for my room, I expected
the room aircon controls to be at least fully functional (even if it was still Spring).
Despite the very ideal location and the generally nice rooms and facilities, I am not sure if I will stay in this Hotel again. Of course, if location was really the primary consideration, then I may reconsider -- but only after checking out the other hotels in the area.
I really hope that Jinglun will be able to hire more well-trained staff and have better hotel policies in the future.
