“Beautiful hotel, exceptional service”

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

Jul 13, 2008
5/5 found this review helpful

This is going to be a long review, so here is my bottom line: I thought this was an amazing hotel because of the service they provide and would absolutely stay here again, even though it is on the pricey side. We were there for a conference so didn't get to do very much, but we tried to get in as much as possible.

Service: the best service I think we've had at any hotel including 4 Seasons and Ritz. They were so attentive and so willing to help with any detail but not overbearing. I can't say enough about their personal touch.

Rooms: Our room was small but beautiful- we had a harborview room and the night skyline was so pretty. The beds were possibly the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. The bathrooms were pretty but I totally agree that they are a little Trump/80's with black marble and gold accents.

Food: We didn't eat at many of the hotel restaurants- I was a little scared off by a review of the sushi restaurant online that said it was average 400$ for 2 people (US dollars). We looked at the menu and thought you would have to eat truckloads of sushi to get to 400$ but we decided to go elsewhere. A friend ate at the italian restaurant at the hotel and did not love it- granted none of us have the most sophisticated palates, but he said he did not enjoy the meal there.

We ate the hotel brunch most mornings and my favorite are the fresh squeezed juices- so good. They have an omelette bar and dimsum and tons of delicious options. It is expensive (about 70$ for 2 people) but we thought totally worth it, at least to try it one of the mornings. Otherwise you can get a smaller breakfast at a nearby mall area for about 10$ for 2 people, easily.

Sen-ryo at the IFC mall had really tasty sushi and we stuffed ourselves for 40$ (US) for the 2 of us! 40$! we went back again just to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it was delicious. Not the best sushi I've ever had but for 40$, I would go again and again.

We tried to eat locally for most of the other meals to get a taste of Hong Kong- we ran into a lot of kidneys and livers and snails which were not my favorite but to each their own. Perfume River in Time Square had decent Vietnamese food- recommend the pork chop fried rice.

We also tried room service one night when we just wanted some american food- the spaghetti was tasty and the burger was fine. Salads and desserts were also fine. Word to the wise, Hong Kong thinks that French dressing is Ranch- I kept ordering "french dressing" (printed on the menu)and they always brought out ranch. We also joined Hyatt rewards which makes it possible to have complimentary coffee in bed in the mornings which was wonderful.

Transportation: We took the airport shuttle bus from the airport coming in and it went very smoothly, about 45$ US if I remember. We took a cab back to the airport and it was no more in price so if it is a low traffice time, I would just take a cab.

Weather/Activities- It rained almost every second of every day we were there for a week. Too bad. The one time it stopped raining, we checked out the outdoor vendors at Sogo which was fun. We never used the pool because it otherwise never stopped raining. So unfortunately we spent a lot of time at the malls at Time Square and IFC but we found things to do. The gym at the hotel was really pretty nice, although not well airconditioned so we sweated like crazy but nice equipment.

Internet- we really wanted internet since we don';t have international cellphones. They charge about 20$/day. We brought our own laptop and used their wifi.

Bottom line- this is an amazing hotel primarily because of the service and kindness of the staff. We also heard good things about other hotels in the area but we would probably stay at this one again because everyone was so attentive and it made our stay really enjoyable.

let me know if anyone has questions!

“Great for business and pleasure”

I've stayed here a number of times over the years and have never been disappointed.

The rooms are great - really funky and modern ( my dream bedroom would look like this!) and often have fabulous views over Victoria Harbour and the west of the island.

Service is impeccable even finding me phone chargers in the middle of the night for an obscure phone.

Food in all the restaurants is great and always good service. You definitely get what you pay for at this hotel but is perfect for business and affordable for a couple of nights for a leisure visitor.

“You Get What You Pay For -- Superior Service”

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

We are a family of 4 with 4 pieces of luggage. We used the GH's van service from the airport to the hotel. The van was the way to go. The GH's porters greeted us at the airport and whisked us and our luggage to the waiting luxury van. It was a service that we paid for and was well worth it given how tired we were after the flight and we didn't need any further hassles of getting the right transportation to get to our hotel.

At the hotel, we were whisked to our room and the lady checked us in from our room. No need to stand in line at the front desk. How efficient. We had slippers waiting for us. We were able to fit our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 daughters ages 9 and 12) comfortably into their room. We had a king bed and a rollaway. The room was extremely clean and had light wood finishings and furniture. My only complaint was that the sofa was a bit worn out. With the rates they charge, they should be maintaining the sofa a bit better than that as customers expect that sort of thing from a 5* hotel. The bathroom was clean and spacious with marble and high-end fixtures.

The hotel restaurant was perfect for us to eat breakfast at every day. They had a wonderful breakfast buffet with lots of juices to choose from. We even had dinner there a few times. The food is delicious. Expensive but you get what you pay for.

The hotel has a great fitness room which my husband used every morning. There was a wonderful pool with great loungers, however we had no time to use that, because there was too much to see and do in HKG.

The location of the Grand Hyatt is not as bad as it seems. There is a ferry terminal that is a few minutes' walk that will take you to Kowloon. You can grab a cab to go anywhere and cabs are cheap in HKG. A short walk will take you to Hennessy Road where there's shopping. A short walk will also take you to a laundry place where you can get your clothes cleaned for a good price per pound (don't use the hotel's expensive laundry service).

The hotel also took good care of our luggage while we went away to Macau for 2 nights and then also when we went away to Phuket for 3 nights. They were our "base", and took really good care of us. Overall, we had a great experience and will return when go back to HKG again.

“Boring but with excellent concierge service”

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

I just came from a not so good experience at the Grand Hyatt Beijing and this experience was quite different in a positive way.

The welcoming was very good, fast and i could tell that things were working well in this hotel. During this business trip i got a really good help from the concierge staff and they helped me with a lots of things from getting special adaptors to my laptop to finding different locations.

I also dined in the thai restaurant and food was very good and the manager, James was extremly helpful and friendly.

So my overall judgement is that the design of the hotel is quite standard and old stylish and could need to be freshened up but the staff is very friendly which is the most important thing.

Breakfast is also good and with a fantastic view of the kowlon island so i recommend having breakfast in the breakfast room.

Another fantastic stay at the Hyatt HK.

Faultless, with impeccable service.

The hotel bar JJ's is remarkably good after a long days work.
