Booked the Island Pacific primarly for the price through BA (less than £300 for 7 nights). I had been concerned about the location of the hotel but was reassured by the reviews on Tripadvisor.
This hotel is definitely not in Central but you can walk (briskly) to the nearest MTR station, Sheung Wan, in about twelve minutes and the tram stop is just along from the hotel. There are plenty of inexpensive buses passing right outside the hotel going all over Hong Kong island: Central Ferry Piers, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Aberdeen and Stanley. Taxis are cheap - $30HK (£2) to Central and $20HK (£1.40) to Hollywood Road/ Soho area. So there is no real issue with accessibilty to or from this hotel's location.
Des Voeux Road West is the the Dried Fish Market area in HK. Whilst it did whiff, I did not find the smell to be overpowering or sickening. The surrounding area is a predominately Chinese neighbourhood so don't expect a Starbucks nearby! But there are a range of local Chinese restaurants, banks, 7-11s and supermarkets to hand.
The hotel itself was perfectly acceptable and good value for the price (NB would not pay the hotel's rack rate or even internet special rate for here). The reception, housekeeping and door staff were very helpful and friendly. My room was compact but not too small, clean and tidy though the decor was rather tired (superior room with partial harbour view). The bed was on the hard side but that is not usual for Asia.
All in all, I had a very enjoyable stay at the Island Pacific and would not hesitate to recommend to friends or family.
