This hotel perched atop the City Hall subway station is always my first choice for both work and leisure trips - partly because of the courteous, competent and service-oriented staff and partly because of its convenient location with everything under one roof and the subway at its basement. It takes about half an hour to reach this hotel for less than SGD2.00 from the airport. Being close to a user-friendly subway system means I am hardly ever at the mercy of Singapore's unpredictable taxi drivers and their complicated taxi fare surcharges wherever I wish to go. I booked my room with Raffles The Plaza for my year-end vacation and was surprised that the hotel had been renamed The Fairmont on my arrival. However, hotel's facilities, rooms and faces as I remember them from a previous visit were still the same.
I was delighted to be upgraded to a Grand Room in the North Tower on level 21 which was very well appointed. The Grand Room was more like a junior suite with two balconies, one overlooking the Esplanade Theatres on the waterfront and the other overlooking the Cathedral, Funan Center and other buildings. A huge king sized bed and a dressing table was on one side while the living area had an armchair and a three seater sofa. There was also a huge desk c/w fax machine and internet modem next to the balcony. The flat screen TV could be viewed from the sofa or the bed as it was mounted on a turntable-like stand. The mini bar was well stocked and the wardrobe held bathrobes, bedroom slippers and even ironing equipment. It is quite inconceivable that The Fairmont is actually an old hotel because everything in Grand Room 2118 is so well maintained - the beds and sofas were firm, the pillows and linen fresh and clean. Only the bathroom is showing its age and looked a trifle bare and cold. It was nevertheless kept meticulously clean and the room attendants replaced used towels and toiletries twice a day - during the routine mid-morning cleanup and again during the evening turn-down service.
There is no shortage of food and beverage options to suit all pockets in the Fairmont/Raffles City complex and its environs. Across the street and one lane behind Raffles Hotel (the white Victorian building) along Purvis Street, there are many niche restaurants and eateries serving local and continental cuisine till late. North of Raffles City is a low rise compound Chijmes which comes alive at night with an interesting crowd patronising their watering holes. There is plenty to do around the hotel too. The Singapore Art Museum diagonally opposite Chijmes is an easy walk away while there is a Toy Museum behind Raffles Hotel. Walk further afield (or one subway stop on the eastbound train) and you will find a hip shopping mall converted from restored shophouses and a huge yellow hot air balloon. Funan Centre to the west of the hotel is a bargain hunting ground for electronics and computer peripherals, and the money changers at nearby Peninsula Plaza offer fairly competitive rates.
We thoroughly enjoyed our three nights in this hotel. Wherever we went, we were always greeted by smiling staff, be they room attendants, bellboys, room service staff and guest officers. Nice change from sullen or expressionless staff or staff with half-hearted or contrived smiles at many four or five star hotels in Asia. The best part of staying at the centrally-located Fairmont is being able to effortlessly fit in plenty of activities in a day. We headed to Chinatown after breakfast on Saturday, then visited Little India and had a late lunch before returning to our room to dump our purchases. A late afternoon gym work-out at the Amrita Spa, followed by a stroll across the underground City Link to Suntec City where we had dinner and enjoyed the fabulously lighted up fountain show. We were back in Raffles City Shopping Centre which is linked to the hotel at 9pm. The place was still lively with crowds doing Christmas shopping. It was delightful to be able to shop till 11pm, and do a round of drinks till 1am. The Ritz Carlton and The Oriental have been recently refurbished and definitely look posher than The Fairmont, but I'll usually pick the last for value and accessibility.
