“Amazing B&B!”

Robinson Crusoe Inn

May 31, 2008

My experience at the Robinson Crusoe was first rate from the point of booking the room to the afternoon I left the Inn. Upon contacting the Inn owner, Jorge, to directly to book a room for a 6-night stay, he was responsive to my requests and questions and offered his help in coordinating airport pick up/drop off. Not having visited the Valparaiso/Vina del Mar area before, Jorge provided guidance on "must see" sites, helped coordinate unique tours to local wineries/
restaurants, and advised my husband and I on the best locations to buy jewelry, types of local wines to purchase, etc.

My experience at the Inn will be a fond memory and I am so happy to have stayed at the Inn vice a "traditional hotel" in Vina del Mar (which is where most visitors stay when they arrive in this area). Why? The intimacy of the Inn, the truly amazing view of the city and the port from the floor to ceiling windows in the living area/eating area, the lovely furnishings and artwork throughout the Inn, and the attentiveness of Jorge and the staff to any and all requests I made.

While Valparaiso is an older city, the Inn is not. The Inn has a modern architectural style and with its furnishing mix of antiques, nautical, and native Chilean Indian, it is truly a gem of a B&B that should be appealing to most travelers. Jorge is expanding the operation across the street from the main Inn with another beautifully built facility with more rooms, gathering area (great for parties, social events), and dining area.

Traditional breakfast in Chile is tea/coffee and a breakfast pastry. .. but not at the Robinson Crusoe! Jorge and the staff whip up an amazing morning fare--omelets, pancakes, unique breads/pastries, fresh fruit salads, fruit whips. .. need I say more?

Jorge and the staff (specifically Andrea) made my husband's and my stay a trip to remember. How many hotels send a "thank you for staying with us" note? Fond memories and yes--friends were made at the Robinson Crusoe.

“Amazing Experience”

Robinson Crusoe Inn

Norfolk

I had the great fortune to discover the Robinson Crusoe Inn while investigating places to stay in Valpariaso. I was a guest at this amazing Inn for 5 nights. I was on a solo trip to Chile to meet my husband who was traveling on business. I had never traveled to South America before and was unsure of what to expect. Arriving at the Robinson Crusoe Inn, I felt like I had arrived to a long-known friends home. This was especially comforting to a woman who is traveling alone. Jorge and Andrea were very welcoming and made me feel right at home. The establishment is very tastfully decorated in a way that made me feel like I was experiencing real Valparaiso and real Chile. You have to see it to believe it... the details in decor are magnificent. I had considered staying at a more American-style hotel in Vina del Mar, but I am so glad that I chose to stay in Valparaiso. It is such an interesting city and so different than anything I have ever seen before.

The Robinson Crusoe Inn is tucked up on a hill in Valparaiso, with an awe-inspiring view of the Pacific Ocean. The Inn is different than any place I have ever stayed. My stay was a significant part of my whole travel experience. Jorge took a personal interest in ensuring that my experience was positive. He assisted me in setting up tours and gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and activities. He made it so easy. He even helped me get to where I needed to go to meet my husband. I doubt one would ever get this kind of attention and care in most other hotels.

In a nutshell, I highly recommend the Robinson Crusoe Inn as a place to stay where you will get an authentic Chilean experience, along with first class service in a truly beautiful setting. I am already dreaming of my next visit to Chile.

Other highlights: Delicious huge traditional breakfast, small lapis lazuli jewelry store with very attractive pieces for sale at reasonable prices, drinking wine while overlooking the city and Pacific Ocean.

“Wonderful beginning to a holiday”

Robinson Crusoe Inn

We chose to stay at the Robinson Crusoe Inn for two days before embarking on a cruise and we are so glad we did. It has great views and the service and ambience were outstanding. The rooms are small, especially if you have a lot of luggage, but charming and we felt we were staying as a guest in someone's house. We especially enjoyed sitting in the lounge in the early evening, loving the view, sipping our wine (no problems here with bringing your own bottle) and meeting our fellow guests. In a small, intimate place such as this, it is so easy to talk to your fellow travellers. We had read about the sumptuous breakfasts, so were expecting a treat, but what we received was above and beyond our expectations. We stayed in the original hotel but had a chance to look at the new building across the streeet, which looks even more inviting. Jorge and his staff were always courteous and helpful. His knowledge of the city and advice on where to go was priceless. We asked him to arrange for us to be picked up at the airport in Santiago and taken to the hotel, which worked perfectly and, without asking, also arranged for our transport to the cruise ship. As an early riser, if I visited again, my request would be to have coffee available before breakfast, which I think started at 9:00 a.m. Would recommend to anyone.

“The Robinson Crusoe: An Inn With Style and Grace”

Robinson Crusoe Inn

5 of 5 stars
Sacramento, CA

What a great pleasure it was to stay at this beautiful, comfortable hotel on Cerro Bellavista, above one of the most fun and dynamic areas of downtown Valpo. The Robinson Crusoe has a boutique feel to it, is quiet and soothing, with lots of interest for the eye in its appointments, and in its layout it is somewhat reminiscent of a treehouse, an effect enhanced by the terrace room atop the hotel. There the staff will happily serve you a glass of Chilean red or white wine in the evenings; it is also where guests enjoy a scrumptious complimentary breakfast of fresh fruit, nectar, omelet, muffins and/or pastries, and delicious coffee (no Nescafe at this establishment). From that large, split-level area, with its floor to ceiling windows, I reveled in reading, chatting with two other guests, sipping a glass of vino tinto, and taking in the breathtaking views of the city (the “San Francisco of Chile”) and Valparaiso Bay. My room combined three areas, which made for the feeling of a small suite: bedroom, living room, and private bath. Very clean, the room had the same boutique feel as the rest of the hotel, the bed and the sofa were very comfortable, and the shower was roomy. One truly excellent restaurant, El Gato Tuerto, is only a couple of short blocks down the hill from the hotel on Calle Hector Calvo, and there are many fine restaurants at the base of the hill, in town. Jorge, the manager, who created this masterpiece of a low-occupancy hotel, has a wealth of information about the city and offers his guests a map and tips about where to go and how best to get there. And the staff! The staff are lovely, considerate, and efficient, and they speak sufficient English to make communication easy. They were the most genuinely caring and amiable of any in my experience of Chile, following Jorge's lead in that regard. While the Robinson Crusoe won't bust most budgets, it will convey a sense of friendly intimacy and personalized service, and is worth every penny.

“A nest in Paradise”

Robinson Crusoe Inn

We absolutly loved the hotel, we had a hard time leaving the premises. It was exceptionally clean. Very good breakfasts, different every morning. The panoramic view from our room and from the terrasse over Valparaiso Bay was breathtaking. The terrasse was inviting to just read or sip some wine and the location very convenient for the different local attractions like the Pablo Neruda museum. Perfect for people who like to experience a less touristic environment and enjoy living among the locals.
