“Run far, far away!”

The Brighton

Wow is all I can say as well as THANK GOD they were booked the next night. I arrived at the Brighton hotel two days before I left on a cruise mid April 2008, we were looking for a quick cheap place to stay so my companions checked in a Fodor's guide and it said only great things about the Brighton, and it was so inexpensive! So on the road we went from Santiago and went to Valparaiso. Finally we arrived at the Brighton hotel and we all though, how charming! it had an adorable look about it and a nice assistant manager that even though we had already been quoted a price of 46$ they said it would be 76$ because of a "third" bed, so we took it anyways. We got settled in VERY dissapointed at the small unclean room and I literally searched the room for cockroaches expecting one to crawl across me in my sleep. Well just our luck we arrived on tango night and as we were put directly beneath the restauraunt floor like I've seen in other reviews there was banging on the floor until 3 AM. Being so utterly dissapointed, I woke up starving hoping for a great meal only to find out as we go upstairs that there's only juice and cold toast for guests who stayed there. We were so eager to leave and transfer to the 2nd hotel (which was a block away, we checked it out before staying there so we weren't duped in the same situation) We went to check out and there was no manager working, the woman couldn't get anyone on the phone and tried to get us to pay 96$ instead of what we were already paying the ridiculous price of 76$. Finally after a long arguement and a trial in attempting to use some spanish to communicate we had it knocked back down to 76$ and ran off as soon as we could to the other hotel. We learned a very valuable lesson in all this, that is don't trust a guide book and don't ever go to the brighton and expect anything.

Unsatisfactory things include:
---dark hair (we were all light headed and grey headed) on the beadspread, sheets, and bathroom floor.
---stains in the carpet
---unable to walk around in the (very small) room barefoot without needing to wash your feet
---dirt on the bathroom floor
---dirty and stained shower, with 3 people only one was brave enough to enter the shower, we waited until we were at our other hotel
---a basically 10x8 room

“Overall Okay”

The Brighton

May 9, 2008

I stayed at the Brighton last week, while taking a side trip from Santiago. I was alone, and the Brighton was a nice place to stay as a solo traveler because it was comfortable enough to stay in the room at night, read my book and write in my journal. Plus the restaurant downstairs is very decent and has a beautiful view--I dare say one of the best in the city. The room was very cute. I am sure it would be a great place to stay if you were with a significant other as well.

i thought it was a little overpriced ($94 for a room with a bathroom). My toilet ran all night and the baseboard on the bathroom door was broken and so rotting wood debris got spread throughout the room. The manager nicely gave me a free dinner in the restaurant for this. Though the toilet was a problem.

There are many options of places to stay in Valparaiso, though my travel book only recommended this place (Fodor's--though I admit it was a bit outdated). If I were to return, I would walk around Cerro Concepcion a bit and weigh my options before deciding on this place. It was not bad, but not the best.

I definitely recommend Valparaiso though! An amazing city.

“Warning!”

The Brighton

You can't beat the view from this hotel's terrace but don't stay there. What has been said in other reviews about the unprofessional/rude staff is true. We were three couples who stayed there for one night early March, 2008. We didn,t get much sleep as loud music (live) from the restaurant kept us awake until around 3:00am. I had reserved the rooms several months prior to our arrival and got an e:mail confirmation of rooms and rates. To my surprise, the manager requested a much higher rate at check-out than had been confirmed (US$ 100 instead of the confirmed rate of $76). Explanation: it was high season (which they knew when I booked) and the value of the dollar was declining. I refused to pay the new rate but after long discussions agreed to pay $83 to compensate them for the decline in value of the dollar! Guess what, after returning home I found out that they had charged my credit card an additional $51. I have declined that charged which was removed by the credit card company.
Also, during my long discussions at check-out another couple appeared that had booked a room 3 months earlier. They were told there was no rooms available despite the fact they had a written confirmation.
Not a good experience!!

“Rude coffee”

The Brighton

To be fair, I did not stay at the hotel. I went there on a beatiful spring afternoon to enjoy the view and have a coffee. What a bad idea. As other people have commented, the staff was awfully rude and the manager on duty was even worse. I tried to pay with a credit card and the waiter came back and said that the credit card machine was broken. I called the manager to hear an explanation as you would asume that and establishment like that would give you options for payment. The manager first refused to show up as he said he was busy! There were only a handful of customer at that time. When he finally showed up, after a long while, he just took the card from me without even acknowledging us. When he returned he repeated the same story of the broken machine and basically told me that I had no option but pay in cash. Luckily I had some US money and paid the bill. It was a most unpleasent experience. I am not returning and people should not go there either. Clearly they do not want your business!

We stayed here two nights. The room we had was quite small but comfortable and on the lower floor. The bathroom was equally tiny but funtional. We had a great view from two windows looking out over the city. Everything in the room and bathroom worked fine, and the bed was comfortable enough. The building overall seemed in just OK repair.

Don't bother with the restaurant unless it is to take in the view during the day. Wonderful! The breakfast was low-end, amazing when you consider they have a full-service restarant kitchen right there.

The hotel staff was indifferent to rude. Ditto for restaurant staff. Check in was a nightmare of confusion and took at least 30 minutes to complete. It's as if they had never done it before.

The location is pretty much perfect though.
