“The worst night's sleep we've ever had”

Hotel San Francisco de Quito

1 of 5 stars
Christchurch, New Zealand
Apr 29, 2008

We had an awful two nights here before we moved to another hotel. Like many hotels in South America, this is a secure complex. To get in, you need press the buzzer & Reception staff will unlock the door. The rooms are in a square shape on three levels, all around a central open-air courtyard. This is pretty, but very noisy. All the corridors are wooden, and footsteps & voices echo around at night. Also, we were unfortunate to be given a room right behind Reception, which meant we were woken by the telephone & security door buzzer all night (this would affect Rooms 2, 3 and 4, so try to avoid these rooms). Our bathroom window opened to the Reception desk, so we had a choice of ventilation or privacy, but couldn’t have both!!

“Old world style”

Hotel San Francisco de Quito

Apr 26, 2008

After reading reviews from trip advisor. we booked this hotel for the first few days of our vacation to Ecuador. It is located about 20 minutes (depending on traffic) by taxi from the airport and the fair was approximately $6. It is located in the old section of town and is in a really old building with courtyard. The hotel rooms are nice, but basic. We had our own bathroom. No Air Conditioning or heat is there, but it really isnt needed with the constant spring like temperatures in Quito. Reading some traveler guides it said it was not safe to walk around the old town at night, so we took a taxi everywhere after dark, and most fares were $2-5.
The breakfast in the cafe located on the ground floor was amazing with fresh juice and biscuits made every morning. Also there is a neat observation deck you can walk up to at the top of the building.
There is a bus terminal very close by, which was convenience since we took the bus around the country after reading the road signs were horrible and tourists can easily get lost driving the countryside.
All in all this hotel was a really neat different type of hotel (almost B & B style) with very friendly staff and a ridiculous deal for the price.

“Pretty, convenient, but loud”

Hotel San Francisco de Quito

Apr 16, 2008

The hotel is beautiful - an old convent, the staff were courteous, and the location excellent. I think the only thing tripadvisor readers should keep in mind is that perhaps because of all this - combined with great affordability - it is a backpacker haven. In and of itself, I actually see this as an upside (as I consider myself closer to fitting that description than not). However, on the night we were there, several groups of very loud young tourists had the run of the place. The noise reverberated through the courtyard which kept us up much of the night - a shame since we had to leave at 4:30am for our morning flight out of Quito. I'm trying not to hold it against the place ( though it would have been nice for the staff to ask them to quiet down) but it is definitely something for older or less tolerant travelers to consider before booking their stay here.

“Friendly service and brilliant location!”

Hotel San Francisco de Quito

Mar 20, 2008

Just back from a working trip to Quito, and can safely say that Hotel San Francisco de Quito will be my 1st choice on my next trip out there. Apart from offering the best price, it's friendly staff, perfect location and tranquil couryard (where there is WiFi access for those who need to work) make it a real old town haven.
I only wish I'd found this place years ago as I've always stayed at swiss hotel when working in Quito. Although I was missing the 'luxuries' of a big hotel (mainly aircon - my room had none) for a while, the old town atmosphere and friendly and helpful staff at the hotel gave me a feel for the city that I wouldn't trade for anything. Aside from everything else, this gem of a hotel has very modest prices, which make even more attractive for the business traveller on a budget.

Highly recommended!

“More than a great hotel”

My husband and I just returned from Quito and the Galapagos Islands. While we found the hotel more than met our expectations for location, value, friendly and helpful staff, we were also thrilled with the travel service on the lower floor of the hotel. If you have plans to visit the Otavalo Market, Galapagos Islands or any other destinations in the area, contact Nelson at [--]. He not only gave us a great deal on our tour to the market, but he was a wonderful local resource for restaurants, places to see and things to do.
