My stay at the Melia was just fine. This is probably one of the nicer hotels in Lima. The rooms are clean and nice, in line with what you would expect at a good hotel, even some free bottled water was provided the first night (nice touch). Staff is courteous and generally nice folks.
Breakfast buffet is quite nice, a substantial assortment of local breads as well as traditional American/European fare - you are sure to find something to satisfy you. There is an internet cafe on the second floor, you may have to ask someone at the front desk to let you in depending on the time (and they will gladly accomodate). There is also a quite nice bar located towards the top floor - do go up and have a drink in the evening and enjoy the view. The swimming pool is nothing much, a very small thing right outside the restaurant window and is surrounded closely by the tall hotel walls, so it's basically a the bottom of a "concrete canyon" - don't imagine you will while away a pleasant afternoon by the pool but it seems ok for a quick dip for the motivated.
Across the street there are some small stores, a pharmacy and some small family-run grocery stores so at least you can pick up water or some snacks. Other than that you will have to take a taxi to anywhere since this hotel is somewhat isolated. The hotel taxis are $6 (18 soles) to Miraflores. You can hail a cab on the street probably for 4 soles, but the hotel taxi has the virture of a snappy driver that speaks enough English to understand you, plus a nice clean car, plus you can relax secure in the knowledge you are not about to be kidnapped or robbed (which, incidentally, CAN happen in the street cabs). So on balance the 18 soles doesn't seem so bad for the unescorted, does it?
In my opinion, for those with business in San Isidro or those on a quick layover on the way to machu picchu, this hotel is fine. But if you are in Lima just to have fun, you may be better off in one of the Miraflores hotels much closer to the action. On the other hand this hotel does have the virtue of being located in a quiet neighborhood, so if the cab rides don't bother you, this could work fine as a quiet retreat.
