We went to Montevideo from Chicago for a friend's wedding in March 2006 and many of the American guests also stayed at the Sheraton. Our room was absolutely gorgeous; we were on a high floor with an unbelievable view of the ocean. The bathroom was huge and the bed was really comfortable. The staff was extremely nice (and very patient with my poor attempt at speaking Spanish), the room was always clean. Our room did not come with an iron so it was a little bit inconvenient to call the front desk and ask for an iron every day (especially if you don't know how to say it in Spanish). Also, whatever you do, DO NOT dial long distance from the room phone as the rates are astronomically over-priced. We got into an argument with the staff at check out and after about 15 minutes of making a scene, they agreed to drop some of the fees for calls that didn't go through. All in all, the location is great, the beach is across the street (and on rainy days, there's a shopping mall and movie theater attached). I recommend avoiding the restaurants in the mall though and venturing out into the city, particularly the Mercado, for some amazing steak.
