“Great room! Accomodating and Conveniently Located”

Sheraton Montevideo Hotel

We went to Montevideo from Chicago for a friend's wedding in March 2006 and many of the American guests also stayed at the Sheraton. Our room was absolutely gorgeous; we were on a high floor with an unbelievable view of the ocean. The bathroom was huge and the bed was really comfortable. The staff was extremely nice (and very patient with my poor attempt at speaking Spanish), the room was always clean. Our room did not come with an iron so it was a little bit inconvenient to call the front desk and ask for an iron every day (especially if you don't know how to say it in Spanish). Also, whatever you do, DO NOT dial long distance from the room phone as the rates are astronomically over-priced. We got into an argument with the staff at check out and after about 15 minutes of making a scene, they agreed to drop some of the fees for calls that didn't go through. All in all, the location is great, the beach is across the street (and on rainy days, there's a shopping mall and movie theater attached). I recommend avoiding the restaurants in the mall though and venturing out into the city, particularly the Mercado, for some amazing steak.

The Sheraton was great. It was in a nice neighborhood, attached to a mall, and with a fabulous view. The room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was large and comfortable. We immediately felt at home there. We also enjoyed the included buffet breakfast. We paid $129 US per night.

“Nice view”

The Hotel is very well located, and have direct access to a large mall with very good food.
The rooms are old, but clean and with a very nice ocean view.
The meeting rooms are reasonable in the 25 floor.
The breakfeast and catering is ok, but expensive for Uruguay.

“All Around Good Hotel”

Sheraton Montevideo Hotel

Spent 2 nights here in February and had a blast- The staff is particularly polite and the hotel is classy and formal, just like the Uruguyan people. The room was comfortable and adequate, just like any Sheraton, but to me what really stood out was the pool and health club on the 25th (top) floor.

Th pool is large and heated, and the gym area is large and modern with beautiful panoramic views of Montevideo, the Rio De Plata and the South Atlantic. There are even sun decks on the top floor to enjoy the view! If you get hungover from sampling one too many of the superb local red wines (like me)- the saunas are a lifesaver.

In my opinion all this was quite a bargain at $95 a night- In fact most of South America is quite a bargain; in countries like Argentina, Chile & Uruguay you get first world value at 3rd world prices. Very much like Europe without all the snobby pretension. Uruguyans are darn nice people.

The Punta Carretas mall that connects to the hotel is large and modern with a first-run movie theatre, but nothing special.

For food try any local "Parilla" with the various meat and steaks cooked (perfectly) over wooden coals. Awesome.

“disappointing”

After spending a wonderful week in Uruguay and staying in some of the best hotels I have every experienced (Four Seasons Carmelo and Mantra Resort), this hotel was definitely a letdown. The staff, remarkably unfriendly for Uruguay, was unable to answer even the most basic questions (a good place for lunch on the waterfront?). The health club is poorly equipped and the food mediocre. The only thing recommending this place is the beachfront location which was definitely spectactular. I'd try the Belmont instead.
