It was delightful walking around Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja, watching the locals and the tourists soaking up the Old City’s charm and sophistication. One could spend a week traversing its narrow streets and still find something new and exciting to observe or to experience. The restaurants and the coffee shops are great, as are the plazas and the wonderful array of beautiful buildings, some of which are admittedly rapidly decaying, but others are being rehabbed and getting ready to dazzle the eye once again. The old and the new exist comfortably juxtaposed, and this is especially true when it comes to the various contemporary Uruguayan artists whose studios are helping to revitalize some of the little known side streets. The artist in the Old City whose work I really admire is Monica Packer. I discovered her studio at 1458 Perez Castellano quite by accident and went back to view her paintings several times.http://www.monicapacker.com/ What excited me most of all, however, were the architectural gems that can be found in every quarter of the Ciudad Vieja. Don’t forget your camera and a sturdy pair of walking shoes.
