“Good Base in Siem Reap”

Auberge Mont Royal d'Angkor

This hotel is on a dirt road within the downtown area of siem reap .I found this to be a great location to visit the market and bar street after a day at the temples. The hotel itself was what i expected for the price rooms a little dated ,nice pool area and staff friendly without being over the top. There are pristine resorts on the airport road which if you want to lock yourself away from the real Cambodia you can do but if you want a basic hotel within reach of downtown either on foot or tuk tuk this fits the bill.

“Bad Service and Lousy Rooms”

In my opinion, there are only two good things about this hotel. Firstly it's quiet and secondly its a short walk to Pub Street (Where all the restaurants and pubs are located). I will not recommend this hotel to anyone. for the following reasons. 1st. The staff are not friendly at all...they are simply not interested in their work or you. 2nd. We stayed in the standard room for 3 nights, There was no water supply for at least 3 times during our stay, on top of that there was no hot water. 3rd The toilet sink was kinda choked. 4th Toilet door was poorly designed, do watch your fingers when you close the door, my partner got her finger skinned by the door frame. Our stay in Siem Reap was really good, the cambodians are hospitable, helpful and friendly, It might even be better if we stayed in another hotel.

“Clean and quiet”

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights in January. For a country where an average worker makes $100 a month, it seemed ridiculous to stay at a hotel that cost over $100 a night.

After reviewing the TripAdvisor and travel books, we made our reservation at this hotel. One of the travel books suggested an upgrade to a deluxe room, so that's what we opted (less than $60 a night). Before leaving the US, we once again confirmed our flight and was advised that the driver would be at the airport to pick us up, free of charge. Going back to the airport would be $5.

Siem Reap International Airport is tiny. We did not find our driver inside the airport, and we were dismayed at first, but the driver was waiting for us outside the airport, which was a big relief.

We got to the hotel very early in the morning, and we checked in. Note that you have to pay first, so if you are not sure of your room (per the complaints about this hotel), you should request to see the room first. Even in the high season, there are hotels that you can go to, so don't let the reception strong arm you to pay for your stay. If they don't show you the room, then you know you should leave.

Tip - bring lots of smaller denominations to give the hotel the exact price if you are using cash to pay for your stay. If you give them a big bill, they won't have change. Also, Riel (Cambodian currency) is not used much except to buy water at small stores, so you don't need to exchange much money at the airport. Exchanging $10 is more than enough.

At the time, we were too tired to even ask to see the room, but when they took us to our room, it was beautiful. Our room overlooked the pool and was located away from the street. Upgrade to a deluxe room is definitely the way to go. Our room was spacious, mattress was firm, and the sheets were clean and crisp. Bathroom had a tub and a shower.

Also, there is a nice pool where you can rest after seeing the temples.

This hotel is located on a dirt road, away from the main street, but it is easy to find. You can buy cheap bottles of water a few stores down (use Riel for that).

Breakfast is a standard fare. Their lunch and dinner is pretty decent too if you don't want to wander off. There are not that many street lights, so it does get dark after 6PM in January.

You can book a tour to the temples. These are the standard prices. Front desk was friendly enough. What you want is a paper and pen handy and write down all the prices for the car, tuk-tuk, and a tour guide. This way, if a tuk tuk driver wants to charge you more than the written price, you know that you can bargain and say that the hotel person told you that the price to a temple cost an x amount.

The best deal is to get a tuk tuk driver for a day or half a day. We saw the temples for 2 1/2 days with the tuk tuk driver and a guide rather than a car. Tuk tuk is a good way to take photos since you are not enclosed in a car. However, the air is heavily polluted, so bring a mask.

We used the tour guide for half a day with a tuk tuk driver the first day, full day the second day, and on the third day, we just asked the tuk tuk driver to take us to back to the temples.

Hint - skip the Bakeng Hill during sun down. That's a cattle call with all the tourists trying to get to the top. Go to Angkor Wat early in the morning if you don't care about that perfect picture in the afternoon because that perfect picture comes with tons of tour buses. We went back to Angkor Wat on our last day and just walked around. We did not see that many tourists and we had the temple to ourselves. It was amazing.

Mr. Teang was our driver, and he was very nice offering us towelettes each time we vistied a site. He will also watch your souvenir while you sight see.

One really good thing about this hotel was the lunch box. It comes in a nifty bamboo box. It contains a tasty sandwich, salad, fruit and a bottle of water for $5. Trust me. This is much better than the restaurant food that your tour guide will take you.

Overall, we had a great time in Cambodia and at this hotel. People were friendly, the location was great, and overall, it was an amazing place to visit.

“They need a lesson on Hospitality”

Auberge Mont Royal d'Angkor

Besides the security guard who sometimes double as the driver, this place is not as advertised. At check-in, we they knew exactly the time our flight arrived, we had to wait more than 1 hour for our room to be ready. Half of the room's electricity doesn't work which meant the safe, telephone, and lamp did not work. They repeatedly called our room because we had friends staying in another hotel but we told them the phone wasn't working, yet they kept calling and made no attempt to fix it. The tour desk is the least hospitable part of the hotel - smart isn't it. We asked for information on tours and prices and were pretty much told if you don't like it go down the street because I don't care about your business. The pictures on the website must have been taken by a magician as well. At our breakfast before 6AM, when we were holding bags etc we were directed to a two person table in a completely empty restaurant. We asked the waitress to sit at a four person so we can place our bags on chairs instead of the dirty floor; she said no because there are other people. There are only two good things about this hotel: they did pick us up from the airport and their breakfast. I wouldn't stay in this place again even if it was free.

“Nothing exceptional at the Auberge”

Auberge Mont Royal d'Angkor

Jan 21, 2008

For $30 a night, this boutique hotel appears a fair deal. The standard rooms we had were prettily furnished enough, although there was hardly any room, cramped as it was with a double bed and a single bed. The bathroom was adequate – small but the hot shower should really be advertised as “lukewarm shower.”

The free-pick up was as stated, provided. The hotel is a short distance of around 10-15 minutes away from the airport. The receptionist and support staff were courteous enough but the receptionists (both the morning and night shift) could do with a little more smiles. For a city that I found amazingly friendly, it seemed that the only place that was clad without a smile was the reception! Note: their overseas calling charge was atrocious. I dialed to India and twice I could not connect as the line was busy yet they tried to charge me for that. Call charges per minute was $1 –pretty steep since there is a shop just around the street where you I paid 2500Riel per minute!

Room cleaning was efficient and thorough. I made use of the Tuk Tuk drivers stationed outside the restaurant and I would highly recommend this guy called Mr Ramorn there.

Breakfast was ample although for a vegetarian there was extremely limited choice…and it didn’t vary much with each day either. Fancy pancakes everyday, anyone? The restaurant served up pretty decent fare – but I could have dinner there just once. For one evening, they closed at 8:00PM since according to them, there wasn’t anyone! Not even when they saw us. Hmm.

Location was great – away from the hustle and bustle yet hardly 10 minutes walk to the pub and food street, and markets.

The hotel’s biggest drawing card is obviously its ambience – chic interiors and French décor. Charming. Pleasant. Yet, from what I saw, and I did a fair tour of the guesthouses around the area – there are similar hotels for a far lesser price. Given a second opportunity, I would probably stay elsewhere – some place where the smiles are more. :-)
