My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights in January. For a country where an average worker makes $100 a month, it seemed ridiculous to stay at a hotel that cost over $100 a night.
After reviewing the TripAdvisor and travel books, we made our reservation at this hotel. One of the travel books suggested an upgrade to a deluxe room, so that's what we opted (less than $60 a night). Before leaving the US, we once again confirmed our flight and was advised that the driver would be at the airport to pick us up, free of charge. Going back to the airport would be $5.
Siem Reap International Airport is tiny. We did not find our driver inside the airport, and we were dismayed at first, but the driver was waiting for us outside the airport, which was a big relief.
We got to the hotel very early in the morning, and we checked in. Note that you have to pay first, so if you are not sure of your room (per the complaints about this hotel), you should request to see the room first. Even in the high season, there are hotels that you can go to, so don't let the reception strong arm you to pay for your stay. If they don't show you the room, then you know you should leave.
Tip - bring lots of smaller denominations to give the hotel the exact price if you are using cash to pay for your stay. If you give them a big bill, they won't have change. Also, Riel (Cambodian currency) is not used much except to buy water at small stores, so you don't need to exchange much money at the airport. Exchanging $10 is more than enough.
At the time, we were too tired to even ask to see the room, but when they took us to our room, it was beautiful. Our room overlooked the pool and was located away from the street. Upgrade to a deluxe room is definitely the way to go. Our room was spacious, mattress was firm, and the sheets were clean and crisp. Bathroom had a tub and a shower.
Also, there is a nice pool where you can rest after seeing the temples.
This hotel is located on a dirt road, away from the main street, but it is easy to find. You can buy cheap bottles of water a few stores down (use Riel for that).
Breakfast is a standard fare. Their lunch and dinner is pretty decent too if you don't want to wander off. There are not that many street lights, so it does get dark after 6PM in January.
You can book a tour to the temples. These are the standard prices. Front desk was friendly enough. What you want is a paper and pen handy and write down all the prices for the car, tuk-tuk, and a tour guide. This way, if a tuk tuk driver wants to charge you more than the written price, you know that you can bargain and say that the hotel person told you that the price to a temple cost an x amount.
The best deal is to get a tuk tuk driver for a day or half a day. We saw the temples for 2 1/2 days with the tuk tuk driver and a guide rather than a car. Tuk tuk is a good way to take photos since you are not enclosed in a car. However, the air is heavily polluted, so bring a mask.
We used the tour guide for half a day with a tuk tuk driver the first day, full day the second day, and on the third day, we just asked the tuk tuk driver to take us to back to the temples.
Hint - skip the Bakeng Hill during sun down. That's a cattle call with all the tourists trying to get to the top. Go to Angkor Wat early in the morning if you don't care about that perfect picture in the afternoon because that perfect picture comes with tons of tour buses. We went back to Angkor Wat on our last day and just walked around. We did not see that many tourists and we had the temple to ourselves. It was amazing.
Mr. Teang was our driver, and he was very nice offering us towelettes each time we vistied a site. He will also watch your souvenir while you sight see.
One really good thing about this hotel was the lunch box. It comes in a nifty bamboo box. It contains a tasty sandwich, salad, fruit and a bottle of water for $5. Trust me. This is much better than the restaurant food that your tour guide will take you.
Overall, we had a great time in Cambodia and at this hotel. People were friendly, the location was great, and overall, it was an amazing place to visit.
