My husband and I stayed at Palm Village for 3 days/2 nights as part of a two week (too short) trip through Indochina. We booked based on positive feedback on trip advisor and the resort far exceeded our expectations! From our first email contact to reserve a room, we were impressed with the staff’s availability and courteousness. We were offered free airport pick up and the driver was prompt and friendly. When we arrived at the Resort, we were immediately delighted by the lovely, tranquil grounds. The attentiveness and efficiency of the staff was also readily apparent; upon check in, we were given a detailed listing of service offerings, which included drivers (via a car or tuk tuk), tour guides to the temples, meals at the resort, massage and spa offerings, tickets for Khmer dance performances, and other travel services. We paid $35/night for a private bungalow, which included a queen bed, desk, refrigerator, bathroom, porch with two chairs, fan, and air conditioning. The bungalow was kept very clean and the resort grounds were beautifully landscaped, with amenities including a nice swimming pool, private viewing tower, and inviting outdoor area for spa services. The lodging rate included a generous breakfast, which consisted of a selection of eggs, fresh fruit, pancakes, noodle soup, coffee, tea, and juice, served in one of three locations of your choosing: the restaurant, poolside, or your front porch. We found the breakfast to be both filling and delicious, as was all of the food we enjoyed in the Resort restaurant. In fact, the Resort restaurant served some of the best traditional Khmer food that we had in Cambodia at reasonable prices.
We found the Resort to provide a quiet, idyllic environment to unwind after long days of exploring the temples of Angkor Wat. Despite its location a bit outside of town, it was also very easy and affordable to get around. On two of the days, we reserved a private car to take us around the temples at a rate of $25/day, which is the standard rate charged in Siem Reap (whether you are staying inside or outside of town) and certainly a worthwhile investment for all visitors! Tuk tuk drivers to the temples are available at an even lower rate, yet we found an air conditioned car to be a worthwhile investment at the end of April (the hot season). Once we had booked a car to take us to the temples, there was only a modest charge of $5 to have the driver came back and take us into town for the evening. By car, the drive to town was only about 7 minutes. On a third day, we had a tuk tuk driver take us into Siem Reap and only paid $6, which included the 10-15 minute ride each way and unlimited waiting time. Regardless of how little advance notice we gave the front desk, we never had difficulty securing transportation and we found all of the drivers to be reliable and friendly. We also booked a tour guide during one of our visits to the temple (at a rate of $25, which is also a standard rate charged throughout Siem Reap) and the guide secured through the Resort was exceptional – incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the temples and surrounding area, friendly, and with strong English skills.
In terms of areas for potential improvement, we only encountered two minor issues during our stay. The first was that my husband received a number of mosquito bites while sleeping one of the nights. There was no formal protection against mosquitoes in the room in the form of netting, mosquito coils, or candles. We would recommend that travelers concerned about these pesky critters ask for protection when checking in at the front desk and would imagine (given the staff’s level of service and attentiveness) that this request would be accommodated. The second was that we booked the four hand massage (at a rate of $15 each) and found the level of pressure to be too intense for our enjoyment. We attempted to ask for less pressure, but perhaps due to the language barrier, this request was not accommodated. We therefore stopped the massage service about half way through, and the Resort owner very generously and graciously removed the service from our bill. By contrast, we each received Relaxation massages (at a rate of $9) and found the massages to be among the best we’d ever had. We both enjoy deep tissue massages and found the relaxation massages to strike a wonderful balance of targeted pressure and relaxing strokes. We only wish we’d had more time to try other services, as the Resort provided the perfect atmosphere to enjoy relaxing treatments!
On a final note, based on the recommendation of our tour guide to the temples we secured two tickets to a traditional Khmer dance performance and buffet dinner at Koulen Restaurant, which we did not find to be worthwhile. We found the dinner and performance to be of mediocre quality and the venue was very touristy. We did not enjoy this event nearly as much as the evenings we spent relaxing at Palm Village or exploring Siem Reap on our own.
Overall, Palm Village was a wonderful, tranquil place to stay and we would return there without hesitation. Visiting the temples of Angkor Wat is truly a magical experience and we cannot imagine a better home base for such a meaningful journey!
