“Beware Overbooking”

Sultan Gardens Resort

Today is 12th May and I was due to stay at the Sultan Gardens tomorrow, 13th May. I booked this hotel in febuary after much deliberation and using trip advisor. I was really looking forward to the break as it is the first hotel I have actually researched & picked prior to booking (normally I use last minute deals). I am fuming and wanted anyone looking to book here to be aware of the problem.

I booked with sunshine.co.uk who use somewhere2stay.co.uk as the supplier. They tell me that most of the hotels will overbook, and as us Brits always get such good deals and pay far less for the hotels than other European travellers, they get priority of the rooms. So it appears the less you pay the less secure your booking is.

The fact I booked 3 months ago seems to have no bearing at all, and despite sunshine being governed by ABTA, as they have offered me a full refund or alternative accommodation (albeit of much lower standard) I haven't a leg to stand on!

So beware, fellow travellers, bear this in mind when booking here in peak season!

And a note to the manager - You have managed to ruin my holiday experience, and not only am I fuming this has happened, I am also devastated. Please note that when you are overbooking your hotel, you are having a negative affect on other people's lives, who are just wanting a holiday to escape the trials and tribulations of life.

Foxyfruit,

As you have not been to The Sultan Gardens; this is not a review of the resort.

I am of course, very sorry about your holiday, but let me make very clear that we have not turned away any rooms at all from ANY British tour operator.

I am well aware of your situation and you should really do a much better job of checking your facts before posting such accusations on a public board.

Again, let me stress, we did not turn away any reservations from any British tour operators.

The hotel is full at the moment and to prevent having to make any turn aways we have sent stop sales requests to our partners. These stop sales requests were sent on the 25th of April and stated clearly that the resort was fully booked and would not accept any new bookings for the month of May.

We did in fact receive your reservation but it was not until the 28th of April. Being fully occupied, we replied with our regrets at being unable to take the booking. If you made a booking in February with your tour operator then you need to check with them why it wasn't sent to us until the 28th of April.

We never took any money from you, or confirmed at any point that we had a room for you. We received your booking 2 weeks before your scheduled arrival date and were already full; and we had to relay our regret to confirm specifically to avoid the very same overbooking you now accuse us of.

Again, I am sorry about your holiday, but what you are doing by posting these accusations is both unfair and unethical.

“Great staff, lovely all rounder hotel”

Sultan Gardens Resort

May 9, 2008

We stayed at the Sultan Gardens on the 17th April for a week and we were not dissapointed.
The staff were very friendly, always smiling and helping when they can, even down to our friendly cleaner.
Our plan was to relax the whole week and do nothing (we didnt even leave the hotel) but there is entertainment if you want it but we stayed between the pool and the beach each day. The beach has plenty of sunbeds but if you want the main pool you need to be up before 9am to place your towel on it - the hotel has a policy that your towel will be removed if you do not return after a certain time but this does not happen (we many a day had towels next to us from 9am and they didnt return til 3pm+ in the afternoon) but we always could find somewhere on the beach if no luck by the pool.
We had a suite, which was spacious and clean. I wouldnt say this hotel is 5*, probably more 3 + - 4* but that is reflected in the price - its still worth going.
Now the food, every night there were different dishes and always a pasta bar but if you like your desserts you will like the choice of about 30 plus desserts each day - yum! like all buffets they are never going to be Jamie Oliver meals but still fine. Big shout out to Abdul, who was our friendly waiter some nights. Sometimes you get your drinks bought to you and some nights you just go up to the drinks counter section.
I would recommend the italian (free) - 4 courses, enough to fill you but book on your first day there as it gets booked up quickly. We also went to the fish restaurant - not all inclusive but still cheap - and well worth going - the fish and service was great.
Evenings we spent relaxing watching a local singer (who does repeat his songs most nights but its still quite relaxing) and sometimes you can get a good laugh from the Russains dancing! One night we went to the night club which was a mixture of RnB and dance music.
Drinks measures were too strong though (4 x the usual) so we stuck to the beer (unless we wanted to be drunk after two drinks!).
Overall this was a nice hotel with great staff and well worth what you pay.

Stayed at the sultan for 10 days april 2008. This was actually my honeymoon. The food is repetitive and not very appetising, i ate pasta and bread for the whole 10 days. The place is well maintained with staff buzzing about eveywhere gardening etc.
keep an eye on what you are being charged if you smoke etc, my husband was charged £5.00 for a packet of cigs one day and £2.50 the next, be prepared to haggle or you will be ripped off. This is no way a 5 star hotel, i have stayed at the hyatt in taba, and thats a 5 star i would say the sultan is more a 3+ star. The hotel has a policy whereas you cannot reserve your sunbeds, however this is not the case, at 7 in the morning there are towels on the beds, although there are plenty, the ones in the prime positions are allways taken either by people or their towels. The beach is nice but shingle not sand. The taxis that are arranged by the hotel are more than double the price than if you was to go outside the front gate and let the security guard get you a cab. The internet doesnt hardly work in the internet cafe, not sure about the internet connection in the room but i expect if the hotel connection isnt working that isnt either. Mainly the guests in the hotel are italian and russian. The hotel has both good and not so good points. I wont return in a hurry. Shame really considering this was my honeymoon.

Dear kad28,

Thank you for choosing the Sultan Gardens and for posting your review. I am sorry that the Sultan Gardens did not meet your expectations (especially on your honeymoon) but you must remember that 5 stars, like anything else, come in categories. The Sultan Gardens is not the Hyatt, but it also does not charge what the Hyatt charges. The Sultan Gardens is a superb 5 star all inclusive beach resort. That being said we are constantly striving to improve our service and facility and I would like to address some of the points you raised:

Regarding the food being repetitive and not very appetizing, I can only say this as I have already said everything else: Our buffet is the best in Sharm bar none. We have four theme nights and the variety of our buffet is above reproach. Even if you just ate pasta every day it would be a different pasta everyday with three different pasta sauces at lunch and three different sauces at dinner.

Regarding cigarettes, these are available, at a fixed price, from our lobby bar. I can only assume that you purchased yours from one of the stores in the lobby. These stores are rented and the resort does not control their prices. We simply offer an alternative at our lobby bar.

Regarding the sun bed reservation policy, I personally oversee this and while we do have guests who don't seem to get it and insist on laying towels out early, these guests almost always have their towels removed. I say 'almost' because we have almost 1,200 sun beds (more sun beds than guests) so it is impossible for us to enforce this policy with 100% effectiveness. I will say what I have told other guests. If you have your eye on a particular lounger and its been more than an hour without our recreation team noticing just inform them and they will take care of it.

Regarding the beach I am not sure what you mean by shingle as it is a sandy beach and we spent quite a bit of money importing golden sand from Dahab to lay on it.

Regarding the taxis. This is an issue of convenience. You can take a hotel taxi at an added cost or you can step onto the street and get a city cab for a cheaper price. This is standard for any hotel in the world. Of course we do offer complimentary transfers to and from the airport so that is a significant plus.

Regarding the internet, I apologize for any inconvenience you might have dealt with and am pleased to report that our cyber cafe and the internet service in our rooms are functioning normally.

Regarding nationalities, we have a healthy mix of Russians, Italians, and Brits with each taking its turn to be in the majority based on the season.

I just wanted to clear up these points but I must reiterate how sorry I am that your honeymoon was not as you expected and I hope that you will consider us for a future visit so that I may personally see to your satisfaction.

Best Regards

We were expecting very third rate as we got a very good deal...but were pleasantly surprised. 4 fantastic swimming pools - really clean and not at all busy, lovely grounds, room clean and more than adequate, pleasant staff...food good but got a bit monotonous after a while - all the dishes seemed to taste the same! The only thing we really disliked was the constant loud music played at the pools and the beach - sometimes so loud you could not hold a conversation, and it went on most of each day. At mealtimes, poor quality lift music was played in the dining rooms which again was annoying. Apart from that, we had a great holiday. The snorkelling off the beach was superb and the excusrions we went on were excellent and well priced. I would certainly recommend it for a budget holiday. Its not far off the Caribbean at a fraction of the price.

I did some research before booking this hotel and reviews looked good but then came along a new manager,Food was very very repetative ,no themed nights nothing to entice you back in ,the salad bar was a disgrace all the salad was smelly ,like when you have left a lettuce in the fridge to long that smell,Beer at the big pool bar was ok all other bars it was warm or flat, the big pool bar now shuts at 5, yes 5 just when you fancy a drink after a hard day on the sunbed. The animation team were told to stop the entertainment at the big pool which in the past was great, And then there was TAP TAP TAP TAP workers laying and cracking tiles all day a few feet away from your sunbed , Then THE LAST STRAW a worker started spraying all the fencework with varnish around the pool area which then came all over us on the sunbeds ,we got this stopped, not by the manager as he could never be found .If you book the italian restraunt book the 7 o,clock sitting so afterwards you will still have!time to go for something to eat in the main restaraunt[you will need it].As for the hotels dive centre totally unproffesional ,no check dives just give us your money and lets go,not acceptable for a high risk sport. On this holiday i spoke to a lot of regulars whom none of them will be returning nor shall i ................................

Dear mikebiff,

Thank you for choosing the Sultan Gardens and for posting your review. I am sorry that the Sultan Gardens was not for you but there are a few things about your review that do not add up.

Regarding the food, the menu is anything but repetitive and we have four theme nights (Italian, BBQ, Egyptian, and Chinese). Regarding the salad bar, it is diverse, very well cleaned, and smells like the fresh ingredients it is made up of.

Regarding the animation team, they only moved to the small pool while renovation work was being done on the large one. The renovation work has been completed and the animation team have returned to the main pool as it is their proper location. I do wonder though how you could be unhappy with the animation being at the main pool and the workers gently tapping in the new tiles around the main pool at the same time. Seeing as how these two events did not overlap.

Regarding the varnish being sprayed on you, I am sorry, but I do not believe that this happened. You must be mistaken or have some ulterior motive.

As for the Italian Restaurant it serves a delicious choice of three set menus consisting of a starter, a pasta, a main course, and a dessert. Nobody leaves unsatisfied and nobody leaves hungry.

Regarding the main pool bar, this bar is open from10 am to 12 midnight everyday. So you're saying that the bar closes at 5 is a little off.

Regarding the regulars you spoke to who said they would not be returning, again, I find this extremely suspect based on our very high rate of guest satisfaction reflected on trip advisor and our in house guest questionnaires.

Finally, regarding the diving center, it is Italian managed, is certified, liscenced, and insured, and I have no doubt, having dived with them myself, that proper safety checks are done.

I am sorry you will not be returning to our resort and wish you all the best on your future holidays.

Best Regards
