We are a couple that travelled independently for three weeks, primarily in Rajasthan. As I developed the travel plan, I thought it would be a good idea to escape the city environment after Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and was I right. We took the train from Jaipur (late) but were met by the Khem Villas driver.

My wife was quite ill as we travelled that day and the cool towels and cold drinks were welcomed.

Like many of the places we stayed in, it is the owner that makes the difference. That is certainly the case with Usha. She responded to my many (many many) emails with patience and good advice. When I was unable to make reservations for a safari through the government website, she did the bookings for us. She also arranged for a car to take us to Bundi. The driver and car were both fine. She runs a tight ship with charm and a smile.

We stayed in a room in the main house and it was as shown on the website. The room was large and the bathroom was spacious and clean. I also looked at the cottages, which were beautiful. Given the difference in price, I thought the rooms were excellent value.

Although I am not a vegetarian, I thought the food was great and plentiful. The staff were attentive and provided excellent service. They gladly provided some simple food for my wife, since she was not feeling well. Again, the value for money for food was also excellent.

I really enjoyed sitting out for pre-dinner drinks and munchies. I enjoyed the diccussions with the other guests and the owners on variety of issues related to global politics and business.

Overall, it was great experience and I can easily see why the won "Best Hidden Gem " award. You will be impressed.

It was planned as a trip of a lifetime and that was exactly what it turned out to be. Having held a long time ambition to see the tigers in their natural environment, as a single traveller it was also important to get the accomodation right and I certainly did that. After a random search online I checked Khem Villas out on TripAdvisor and it almost seemed too good to be true - but the reviews do not lie. It is a fantastic place. Usha, Goverdhan and their team made me feel extremely comfortable and provided excellent service, accomodation and food. But it's all the little extras that made it special e.g. cold drinks and towels when going out on a safari. I was very lucky, out of 7 safaris I saw tigers on 5 occasions. If you are planning a trip to Ranthambore I do not think you could do better than staying at Khem Villas.

When reading all previous excellent reviews we decided to book a cottage straight away. From the moment we were met with a warm welcome at the station in Sawai it was the most wonderful experience. Khem is in a great location to explore Rnathambore and the beautiful cottage we stayed at was overlooking one of the small lakes on the property. There is a private terrace, a separate little courtyard for sunbathing and a fantastic outside shower.- After a jeep safari tour it was a treat to sit outside watching the sun setting.
Everyone at Khem is most kind and has made our stay very memorable. The meals (fruits and vegetables home grown) are taken on a veranda with everyoneelse, are truly Indian, and in the evenings there is a bar set up near the second, smaller lake where everyone can meet, have a drink and chat. It is a lovely idea which every guest took on to socialise. We can highly recommend to stay at Khem!
Big thanks to Usha and her team for four amazing and relaxing days. What a beautiful piece of India!

“Khem Villas vs. Oberoi”

This is a fairly new hotel and people choose between Khem Villas (if they have heard of it) and the Oberoi Vanyavilas. The difference is that at Khem Villas, you are located nearly within the park (Ranthamnbore) and you are treated to a much more personal experience, with the same 5-star hospitality. It's a small hotel with beautiful landscaped grounds. I am from the US, and came to Khem Villas directly from Oberoi Amarvillas. Khem Villas was a much needed dose of home in my first trip to India (2.5 week vacation). It added a luxurious, much needed respite. Usha, the owner, is committed to the area, to organic food, to the villages and wildlife. Can I just say that the food was unbelievable and I'm not the organic type? She made this visit an authentic experience. She is well connected in the area and I felt that I got the real education on the tiger trade (aka unfortunate poaching- from her). The cottages we stayed in had Anokhi fabrics (the best), fantastic 5-star bath areas, and stunning views. They were private, homey, and had the warmth of all of India in them. The food was some of the best I encountered in India. And the nightly campfire (with full bar) allowed me to connect with people from around the world. I stayed at incredible heritage hotels across India and count my stay at Khem Villas as one of my top experiences.

If I had to rate my best experience of our 21 day trip to India-Khem Villas and the family than runs it will be at the top of my list. The pictures don’t do justice for how beautiful and magic this place is. Usha (the manager) is such a lovely person. We felt we were staying in a friend's house. They are kind, honest and extremely professional. The food was amazing and varied. They mixed Indian and international cuisine- in case you are tired of the curry. They should write a recipe book because the dishes were seriously delicious. At night, we used to all sit around the fire, and the family that runs the resort would sit with us. We would be all summarizing how the day went and if anybody saw Tigers. Everybody that we talked to that did more than 1 safari saw tigers- and we did 4!!! And we saw them!!! It is a breathtaking experience when you finally see them. It’s a matter of luck, the more times you go on the jeep, the better. I recommend the Jeep not the Bus. I recommend you book in advance through internet to guarantee a space in a Jeep. A tip: there is a train from Delhi that takes around 4 hours- it doesn’t appear in the guides so book it in internet- or send an email to the hotel, they might know an agency in Delhi that can arrange it for you. But we wish we knew this before we went because it would have made things easier.

The family than runs Khem Villas is just admirable. They are also involved in a very nice project were they help the people of Sawai Madhopur. They construct hospitals, schools and they educate the people of the village, making them understand the importance of protecting the Tigers. Talking to them about it is a pleasure.
