I just returned from a week in Tokyo on business and was really pleased with this hotel. I lived in Tokyo for 3 years so have some knowledge of the city.
The Monterey Akasaka is a great value for what it offers. It is spanking new, incredibly clean and one of the most quiet hotels I have ever stayed at in my life. Not what I expected in downtown Tokyo. I am used being woken by hallway and street noise but this did not happen.
Rooms are not overly large, but hey this is Japan and the rates cannot be beat. Rooms are very clean, stylish and filled with lots of great ameneties including all you would expect such as free internet access (not wireless) but cord supplied, nice but small desk, stocked mini-bar, complete bathroom supplies (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc).
Location is excellent -- 4 minutes walk downhill to nearest subway Akasaka Mitsukemae on the convenient Marunouchi (red) subway line. Minutes to Tokyo station and all central locations including Roppongi for some evening fun!
I liked the local coffee shop nearby for breakfast and there is a Starbucks by station and lots of 24hour convenience stores.
Hotel staff was professional and helpful, but somewhat reserved. Typical for Japan. I would guess about 40% of guests are non-Japanese business travelers so they are set up for non-Japanese visitors pretty well.
All-in-all I had feeling I was staying at much more expensive hotel than I paid for. Tip - I brought way too much luggage and clothing. Closet is very small! They have same day drop off cleaning service. Next time I will only take 2 suits and use reasonably priced laundry service.
If you go here they will not tell you but you need to insert key in a magnetic holder near door for electricity to turn on -- smart conversation idea as all goes off when you leave. Just a bit hard to find in the dark when I arrived.
I am booking my next trip to this hotel.
