If the potentially harsh damage deposit policy does not create a problem, the Pearl Manila is an above-average hotel choice for Manila's Ermita section and the UN Avenue area.
I have stayed at the Pearl Manila four times since 2004 and always enjoyed it. Advantages are:
* by Filipino standards, a robust and large breakfast buffet for free to guests
* close to Robinsons Mall in Ermita (on Padre Faura Ave, about 500 yards from Pearl Manila Hotel)
* several super cheap small cafes along General Luna Ave (which is the front of the Pearl Manila), some open until 9PM
* a McDonalds and Jollibee (essentially a Filipino version of McDonalds) a 2 minute walk from the hotel lobby
* rooms start on the 10th floor, lobby is on the 9th floor, high above most traffic noise. Get a room with an ODD number so it faces the much quieter Gen. Luna Ave. side
* competent staff
* close to NEW ocean aquarium, Ocean Park, which is one block above UN Ave on Manila Bay (by Luneta Park).
* close to Ermita bars such as G Point Bar and LA Cafe for single guys
* clean rooms. In March 2008 the hotel shut down the entire 14th floor to thoroughly clean all rooms. Exterior was being repainted. A sharp contrast to the rather nearby Cherry Blossoms Hotel which looks like it has not seen a fresh coat of paint in about 15 years.
* 24 hour convenience store immediately across Gen. Luna Ave.
*every room has a safe with which you can choose your own code for the digital lock
Damage deposit policy is a potential problem. My girlfriend was almost not allowed to check in the night before my flight because, although I had paid with credit card for my booking, the front desk wanted an additonal 1000 pesos to cover the damage deposit for ONE NIGHT. When I arrived the next day I confirmed that with the hotel manager who is a really nice humble guy. She was eventually allowed to check in but it was a real hassle. The hotel did not charge my credit card for the policy.
Recommend calling front desk after booking your room about the current enforcement of the damage deposit policy.
When going to mall and needing a cab, walk out on the Taft Ave side and then head towards Padre Faura Ave, after walking about 2 minutes, stop and flag down a taxi. There is an open, turnaround section in the road divider, your cab can make the u-turn and be at the mall much much faster than if you catch a cab at the hotel's front side (on Gen. Luna Ave.).
"Pearl Manila Hotel, by intersection of Taft and UN Ave.", memorize this so the cab drivers will know where to take you when you head back to hotel.
Single beds are two twin mattresses so dont sleep in the middle of the bed or you will get a backache.
I have always stayed in the hotel's smallest room and found it to be a great value, with the american dollar losing strength anything below $60 for the smallest room is a strong buy.
