My husband and I stayed here 3 nights for our honeymoon in Dec. 2007 and it was absolutely worth it! It was our introduction to the French Polynesia. On our way to the resort we dropped off other visitors at their hotels and the Intercontinental was by far the nicest of the island. They treated us incredible and even had a champagne bottle upon our arrival to celebrate the start of our honeymoon. The service was A+ - anytime we needed anything, they came right away and everyone was really nice. The resort is quite large so it was quite a walk to get to the lobby (which is were food and bar was).
The rooms are quite spacious with a living room area and nice balcony. It has a shower and bath tub and spacious closets. Very clean and tidy with bamboo floors. It does have a small TV with some english channels. Keep in mind that this resort has bungalows that are not over the water (with garden views), some 1/2 over the water, and very few 100% over the water. Our bungalow was 1/2 over the water and was not in very deep waters. I will say that ours had a gorgeous view of the mountains and open sea.
The resort has a GREAT beach area that is absolutely lovely where you can slide in some lounge chairs for tanning and relaxation! We did notice that there isn't as much fish around the resort itself and the water isn't as crystal clear as it was in Bora Bora. But the temperature of the water was perfect and the weather was actually pretty good with some overcast - considering that it was their 'rainy season'.
As for excursions, the first night we arrived we went to the Tiki Theatre were we saw typical Tahitian dances. It was actually really fun and they put on a great show (with fire dances and such). We a great time and it was a great introduction to the island. The next day, we did the dolphin excursion and we loved it!! And YES it is very expensive, but to be honest when are you going to have a chance to swim with dolphins looking over picturesque waters and mountains? You actually get to interact with the dolphins - he actually tugs you under water and you get to play with him! Our dolphin excursion only had about 4 people so it was perfect! The last day, we did an island tour excursion and it was a great way to get out of the resort and see the island's true culture. Our tour guide was really cool and drove us around the island to great picturesque spots. It was a great way to see the island's true colors! We booked all of our excursions through the resort's concierge. They were very helpful and accommodating.
As for food, not much to say. . .it is typical 'island food'. Service is not as great as in the US, but you have to go in with the mentality that you are in vacation and that their lifestyle and culture is totally laid back. Our honeymoon package included breakfast and dinner so we were able to save some dollars there BUT keep in mind that drinks and food as a whole are VERY expensive in all of the French Polynesia islands!!!
Ladies - you have to buy yourself some black pearls! They are stunning and worth it! TIP - everything is negotiable! Read up on black pearls before buying them so that you make sure you are getting quality jewelry.
Overall, we were very satisfied with everything that the Intercontinental had to offer us and we would stay there again!
