“O.K but expensive compared to other B&Bs in the same area.”

We were originally booked to stay at The Cocker but owing to a 24 flight delay our room had been given away and we had to find alternative accommodation on arriving in the San Telmo area.
We walked into the Gurda and were quoted US$121 for their cheapest room. We accepted as we were desperate to put our luggage down and have a quick shower. The room was very small, with no windows but it had a double bed and a small bathroom with shower. Almost immediately we had trouble with the toilet which my husband (an excellent handyman) found to be missing an important screw from the ball valve mechanism. We reported this to the very friendly receptionist and went out to spend the afternoon in BA. On returning our bags had been moved to another room as they had not been able to fix the toilet.
The next room was slightly larger and had a bath tub. The windowed doors opened onto a small courtyard and so it was not possible to open the windows or blinds and so whilst in the room it was necessary to have the electric lights on all the time as there was no natural light. The bed that night was very comfortable and we slept well. I was told that this room was US$190 but fortunately we had been given a free upgrade.
We left early the next morning (6.00 am) and were very grateful that the staff had left us some juice and a sandwich for our breakfast.
Every member of staff was very friendly, which was a great introduction to BA and Argentina. However, as another review mentioned some of them did not seem to have any local knowledge of rest aurants etc.
The cost of the rooms I felt to be on the high side. Our original choice, the Cocker (just around the corner) was to be US$85 for rooms which have received numerous praise from Tripadvisor reviewers and the press. I feel that $121 for the first room we were shown and $190 for the second very high when you consider neither had windows and both were small. The hotel gave me the impression of being cramped and claustrophobic with poor quality fixture and fittings. The layout meant that it was quite noisy in the rooms and apart from the restaurant and small bar there was no other public area for sitting in.
If the room rates were lower I could have given it a higher star rating but for the money paid I would have liked just a little more space.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on a recent 6 day visit to BA. We had stayed our first 3 nights at the Park Hyatt Palace Duhau and were blown away with the rooms, the grounds and the service there. But they could not accomodate us for the remaining nights, we selected the Gurda based on other reviews here on Tripadvisor. When we arrived at the Gurda, you can imagine how apprehensive we were when we first lay eyes on the property! Yet, we were completely wrong! While we really enjoyed the Park Hyatt and the service there, we really enjoyed the San Telmo area. It felt more like Buenos Aires.
The hotel is small - 7 rooms. We had the Tango Room. We arrived at 11AM fully expecting to not be able to check in. However, the front desk clerk announced us by name and said he was expecting us and that our room was ready!
Upon entering the room, there were rose petals laid out on the bed duvet and fresh-cut flowers on the dresser. The room was large and airy with a jacuzzi tub in the main bedroom area and a shower area separate. The room was adorned with artwork from a local artist (available for sale) and candles to create some ambiance with the jacuzzi tub! Overall, very clean and comfortable.
There was a little outdoor semi-enclosed common area outside of our room which could be used for smoking and conversing with friends etc. On several occasions our sleep was interrupted by people smoking and drinking in these areas late into the evening and the noise filtered into our room.
Breakfast was included and prepared to order. You make your selection from a variety of menu options presented to you on a placard. Our server, who spoke very little English (and whom we suspected had very little experience) was enthusiastic and very eager to please! Overall, not bad, but not the best option if you want to get out early in the morning, and quickly! We did not take advantage of the on-site bar or restaurant, but the ambiance is very nice and the menu looked good.
The front desk clerks were equally enthusiastic and very nice and knowledgeable. There is free wifi internet access but you must ask for the code to their secure access point. Once we figured this out, we were fine. On the day of our departure we had a late night flight and asked if we could store our luggage at the hotel. The clerk at the front desk not only offered to let us keep the room, but we could keep it as long as we needed and were free to come and go throughout the day as they did not have the room rented for that evening. The housekeeper came in and straightened up the room and left us with fresh towels! Nice touch.
We enjoyed our trip to BA and will definitely be back and would definitely consider another stay at the Gurda.

“Hostel or hotel?”

Gurda Tango & Winery Hotel

Jan 4, 2008

Lovely rooms and a good location for San Telmo. Our initially excitement was quickly subdued by all the small things that were not right, light bulbs that did not get replaced despite asking 3 times, no plug in bath, staff with limited local knowledge, breakfast that took 30 mins, water in showers that was luke warm, taxi's not booked when asked for, linen that was poor quality, people having breakfast outside our room at 8:30am. You could not fault them for trying, they put champagne in our room, but no ice bucket or fridge, water jug on day one that was never replaced.

Hotel Gurda has the makings of a lovely hotel, but the setup and the staff reminded me of a hostel. We wanted to find a restaurant for New Year, but everywhere seemed closed (BA is not the best city for NY), but the hotel was completely unable to help or recommend anywhere!

“The best place to stay in Buenos Aires”

I cannot overstate what a wonderful place this is. Everyone associated with the Gurda Hotel is so nice, welcoming and helpful that you feel as if you are staying in someone's home. My husband and I spent three days here during our honeymoon and wished that we had booked the whole week. The property is gorgeous, too. It is an old mansion that has been renovated into 7 different rooms, each with its own personality. We stayed in the Tango Room (highly recommend it), with bright red walls, vivid artwork and a whirlpool tub. They gave us a bouquet of flowers for our room on the first day and every evening we came home to a room full of candles and a bed covered in rose petals. The Gurda's attention to detail is unsurpassed. And they are just lovely individuals, as well. Carolina helped us out with directions to everything and got us reservations to a fabulous tango show at Cafe Tortoni. Marcos, the property manager, had wonderful advice on what to do in the area. The people are fantastic, the rooms are large yet personal and inviting, and the breakfasts (which are included) are delicious. Plus, San Telmo is a fantastic neighborhood to explore. If you go to Buenos Aires, stay here.
