Viva Wyndham Tangerine

I can't understand what these individuals from the USA want from an All Inclusive package. Some of the reviews i read before going to Viva Wyndham were awful but i can tell you from my experience it is a good resort with plenty happening constantly through the day. The animation team work extremely hard throughout the day and evening 6 days per week and my thanks go to Luis for an enjoyable time. This guy and his team work their balls off.

The room we were allocated was a superior room with two double beds, bathroom was enormous but no bath (but who cares). Shower didnt produce any hot water for our duration but the hotel is working on this issue but they did compensate us thanks to Vicky the First Choice Rep. Also good size balcony and the air con was superb throughout, it stays on all day. The room has a fridge which gets replenished daily, iron and board and tv (channel 95 for the Premiership matches all day saturdays!!)

The food had its ups & downs but generally good. The Mexican and the Italian also good and a break from the normal Buffet restuarant. We ate in these restaurants more than once per week, just go to guest services and book it as they never checked our room number to see if we had booked it already that week. You get served your drinks in glasses in the restuarants but other than these timings you get plastic ones. These could do with renewing.

The swimming pool could do with a face lift which apparently its having in September. If it does there is another smaller pool to use on the resort. The beech is excellent with constant waves for boogie boarding. There are alot of kite surfers daily after 1pm as the wind always picks up around this time. The Pool area gets shelted though from these winds by the Palm trees. On the beech you get thye normal sellers of cigars ect, say No thanks and they leave you alone.

Generally your holiday is what you make of it, we had a great time and made some great friends from Leeds/Manchester/Fife/
Thanks guys!!!

I paid under 3K for this holiday for a family of 4 and felt I got good value for money. Don't be mislead from some reports and don't listen to these Yanks as they winge at anything.

Go and enjoy!!

“Not great”

The Wyndham corporate offices need to take a visit here and see for themselves. This hotel is a cattle call. The staff are for the most part friendly and hardworking however, this hotel has some problems. The turle pond is disgusting and stinky.....needs to go. The food is about a 3 (scale of 1-10) and the plastic glasses are chipped and well used. The soup warmers in the buffet line look like a prison camp mess hall used them for several years then donated them to this hotel. Same with the bar. Don't get a mojito. The plastic glasses are disgusting. This hotel has a frequent smell of sewage throughout the entire grounds as you walk around. My suite was as they described "the best" in the hotel and was located above the kitchen which was quite noisy....banging dishes and water running loudly most of the day. The partying is loud every night and can be heard in every room. It goes on until midnight at least every night. I am talking loud music, cheering, etc. The pool was clean but was worn and needs a face lift. The disc jockey that is hired by the hotel puts up enormous speakers every day with loud decible music and moves from beach to the pool....you can't get away. I could not even hear my ipod with the earphones in my ears. I read some of these same cautions on tripadvisor and I thought.....hmmm I'll bet I can find a quite place to relax. Don't be a fool like I was. Don't stay here. It is a 2 star hotel at best.

Well…where to begin. We arrived at the Wyndham Tangerine about 40 minutes before our check in time of 3:00. We were able to get checked in, but were told we needed to wait until 3 to get into our rooms. In the meantime, a large contingency of locals began to check in. We finally got back to the desk around 3:10 at which time we were told that it would be another 20 minutes before one of our rooms was ready. Once we were ready to check into our rooms, we needed to carry our own bags and found that the elevator was not working. We carried our bags up to the second floor of the main building. Opening the door we immediately noticed water damage to the ceiling as well as peeling paint on the walls. The beds looked like rollout beds with 1960’s bedspreads. Our son and daughter opened their door and there was an immediate smell of body odor and cigarettes. We all had made up our minds that we were bound and determined to have a good time despite the reviews we had read, but this was not a good start. We decided to get something to drink and I was looking forward to having a couple of ice cold Presidentes. I was disappointed to find that they were far from ice cold. Pee warm would be a much better description. The resort has only one small bar (not a sit down bar) and frequently we had to wait in line. Next it was off to the buffet for some dinner. What a major disappointment. Much of the food was not very appetizing, things were not kept cool as they should have been. We managed to find something to eat, we have been to several all-inclusives and this was bad. Several times while we were at the buffet they had no ice and/or the soda machines were not working. We have included a photo of one of our trips for breakfast where part of the ceiling in the buffet literally collapsed due to a water pipe break. We did notice a constant dripping from the ceiling in the main building and there were always towels there to soak it up on the floor. Later that evening we decided to get some sleep. What a joke. Around 11:00 the disco opened and was blasting music until at least three in the morning. It was so loud it was shaking me in my bed, it was also accompanied by loud screaming most of the night. It sounded like the patrons at the disco were riding a rollercoaster most of the night. After a few hours of sleep we decided to get up and get some breakfast. First we went to the desk and demanded two new rooms in a different building and our request was granted. We also had some friends who were arriving that day and we told them that we would like them to be in the same building. The desk staff was very accommodating. We had to wait about ten minutes for someone to bus a table for us at breakfast as many of them were consistently not set up. We also noticed that between diners the tables were never washed. Once again the food left a lot to be desired. It was time to hit the beach. This was the one bright spot. The beach itself was beautiful despite the fact that many of the chairs were broken and full of mildew. Initially we were constantly harassed by the local vendors. They went away after a while. My wife and daughter decided to have their hair braided at an agreed upon price of $70 for the two of them (which we later found out was the going price at the spa in the resort). When they were finished they insisted that the price was $70 per person, not for both. On top of that they wanted my wife to give them each $20 for beads. They would not leave my wife alone until she paid them the full price. HUGE WORD OF ADVICE, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THE VENDORS ON THE BEACH. YOU CAN TO INTO TOWN AND GET THINGS MUCH CHEAPER. It was enjoyable watching the kite surfers when they were not buzzing you and spraying water in your face and the ocean did provide some awesome body surfing and boogie boarding waves. The pool was a whole other story. It is not kept in the greatest of condition. We ended up eating at both specialty restaurants, they were by no means anything to brag about. We spent several days in Cabarete and it was quite a bit of fun, we found some great bargains (check out the liquidator store first, they are by far the cheapest around) and spoke with a lot of the local people. We had lunch one day at Jose O’Shays and it was very enjoyable. We did spend a couple of evenings at the casino in Cabarete and had a really great time. Afterwards we experience the night life in Cabarete and it was awesome. It really is unfortunate that the Wyndham Tangerine is not kept in better condition and the food is awful, they have some of the nicest surroundings we have ever experienced . On the day that my wife and I left (as well as our friends) we all came down with some of the worst colds and headaches we’ve ever had. We’re not sure if it was something from the resort or what we got into (they did fumigate the rooms the day before). This was a good thing as our bathroom was full of ants and we were paid a visit one morning by a huge cockroach. Would we go back to Cabarete? Absolutely. Would we go back to the Wyndham Tangerine. Absolutely not.

“Great Time”

I went for a week with my family and had an overall great time. The grounds were really nice and the resort is relatively small so it is easy to get around. The ocean has really good waves...a lot of fun. Some of the negative aspects of the hotel that I read about in previous reviews I found to be true. There were several power outages but I didn't think it was a big deal. I had paid extra for the oceanview room, not by choice but because that was all that was left, however there are only a few true oceanview rooms, the rest have views that are obstructed by trees and not really on the ocean. I had the advantage of not facing another building compared to those who didn't pay the extra $$$. My room was large and comfortable. The shows were okay. The food in the a la carte restaurants was good. Some minor glitches in the vacation but I got to spend some quality time with the family, so it's what you make of it. I was really sick when I came back, I didn't do anything about it for the first few days but ended up having to go to the hospital the next Friday night, I got antibiotics and that worked right away. This happened even though I followed the advice re. not drinking the tap water, so that's the risk one takes for paradise.

“Had a good time”

Viva Wyndham Tangerine

Arrival: Have your Tourist card filled and pay $10 at the airport - very quick process, no payment on way back Transfer: 25 mins from Puerto Plata airport Hotel: Quick check-in. Grounds were very well kept and cleaned all the time - including all communal toilets, never any bad smells! Our room: Had a musty smell, hardly any natural sunlight, which turned out to be a blessing as it got hot. Aircon was just right when we turned it down - but went off completely when turned to max. Bathroom was very good size, no bath, had the shower drain fixed as it kept blocking then worked ok. We were on first floor so no passers by and faced a building so ended up feeling quite private. The entertainment area and pool was to the left and you could hear the music and noise until around 11pm. We thought about moving but stayed luckily no slamming doors or noise after 12ish (apart from the disco some nights)- got restful sleep. Decor is dated walls need re-painting / plastering Food: Not that great in taste or much choice but you will not go hungry. The potatoes are the best - usually very creamy. Had fresh fruit 3 times a day, melon shakes made a nice change.Beautiful ginger cat joins you in the eating area - but i noticed his leg was broken on the last night and was limping - not sure what happened...cant imagine they will take him to a vet - if you go please check he's ok! Beach: Amazing, sand is clean enough to walk barefoot. Sea is quite rough - Caberete beach is the KITE BOARDING CAPITAL OF THE CARRIBBEAN! so cool to watch them, walk up to the right of the beach and Red Bull sponsor competitions i think daily, good fun some are really good. Go further up the beach and there are some restaurants food smells lovely- only go by cab in evening! Was worried about the breeze from other reviews but glad for it once got there - helped to make the heat bearable. Shopping: From front of hotel turn left and walk for 10-15 mins, liquidation is good but another on the left handside is better don't know name of it but do mugs for 99 pesos. I think the farther shops were more expensive. Its ok to walk in the day but you will get asked if you want a ride by bike or cab and some places no pavement - go by beach if you wanna avoid! Airport duty free: Is rubbish and expensive go with light suitcase and buy in the local shops. Also you will have more weight coming back as you clothes stay damp - its very humid there. Weather: Its hurricane season until Sep it rained on 4 of the 7 days hol & lightening on last day! Rain cleared quickly but lasted most of the day on one occassion. Other holidaymakers: Germans, some British, some Canadians and Americans but mostly locals. The local people seem nice. Excursions: Went on Outback Safari - Junior was our guide and was very funny cost- $84 per person. wear insect repellent to be on safe side. Enjoyed this - do not drink the coffee offered in the typical house, I've had a dodgy stomach since this. Also take anti-bacterial gel or wipes as there is nowhere to wash your hands after loo trip at the typical house. Dont bother buying the coffee on this trip from the plantation is smells off and i think im gonna chuck away the natural cholocate i bought too! Had a go at Boogie Boarding - loved it , I'm not a good swimmer but anyone can do this it seems the water is shallow but rough so stay near! You can get boards where the you get the towels from in the hotel, its part of the All-in. Gym: Weights, Sauna, Steam, cycle, no running machine - part of the All-in Local Buys: Get some pineapple wine if you go on the outback safari - couldnt find it anywhere else. Mamajuana - is a local drink (you mix rum with some herb barks and honey) its an aphfrodisiac or viagra i think.Cigars: Sweetlove is a good brandVanilla essence - Get them in most supermarketsCoffee: Buy in the local supermarkets Overall: Its a Third World country and thats part of its charm - none of the stresses of western life it seems. The people are relaxed and happy even though they have near to nothing no surprise being surrounded with such nature and beauty every day. Loved it and really miss the place...would like to see the East coast in future!
