Arrival: Have your Tourist card filled and pay $10 at the airport - very quick process, no payment on way back Transfer: 25 mins from Puerto Plata airport Hotel: Quick check-in. Grounds were very well kept and cleaned all the time - including all communal toilets, never any bad smells! Our room: Had a musty smell, hardly any natural sunlight, which turned out to be a blessing as it got hot. Aircon was just right when we turned it down - but went off completely when turned to max. Bathroom was very good size, no bath, had the shower drain fixed as it kept blocking then worked ok. We were on first floor so no passers by and faced a building so ended up feeling quite private. The entertainment area and pool was to the left and you could hear the music and noise until around 11pm. We thought about moving but stayed luckily no slamming doors or noise after 12ish (apart from the disco some nights)- got restful sleep. Decor is dated walls need re-painting / plastering Food: Not that great in taste or much choice but you will not go hungry. The potatoes are the best - usually very creamy. Had fresh fruit 3 times a day, melon shakes made a nice change.Beautiful ginger cat joins you in the eating area - but i noticed his leg was broken on the last night and was limping - not sure what happened...cant imagine they will take him to a vet - if you go please check he's ok! Beach: Amazing, sand is clean enough to walk barefoot. Sea is quite rough - Caberete beach is the KITE BOARDING CAPITAL OF THE CARRIBBEAN! so cool to watch them, walk up to the right of the beach and Red Bull sponsor competitions i think daily, good fun some are really good. Go further up the beach and there are some restaurants food smells lovely- only go by cab in evening! Was worried about the breeze from other reviews but glad for it once got there - helped to make the heat bearable. Shopping: From front of hotel turn left and walk for 10-15 mins, liquidation is good but another on the left handside is better don't know name of it but do mugs for 99 pesos. I think the farther shops were more expensive. Its ok to walk in the day but you will get asked if you want a ride by bike or cab and some places no pavement - go by beach if you wanna avoid! Airport duty free: Is rubbish and expensive go with light suitcase and buy in the local shops. Also you will have more weight coming back as you clothes stay damp - its very humid there. Weather: Its hurricane season until Sep it rained on 4 of the 7 days hol & lightening on last day! Rain cleared quickly but lasted most of the day on one occassion. Other holidaymakers: Germans, some British, some Canadians and Americans but mostly locals. The local people seem nice. Excursions: Went on Outback Safari - Junior was our guide and was very funny cost- $84 per person. wear insect repellent to be on safe side. Enjoyed this - do not drink the coffee offered in the typical house, I've had a dodgy stomach since this. Also take anti-bacterial gel or wipes as there is nowhere to wash your hands after loo trip at the typical house. Dont bother buying the coffee on this trip from the plantation is smells off and i think im gonna chuck away the natural cholocate i bought too! Had a go at Boogie Boarding - loved it , I'm not a good swimmer but anyone can do this it seems the water is shallow but rough so stay near! You can get boards where the you get the towels from in the hotel, its part of the All-in. Gym: Weights, Sauna, Steam, cycle, no running machine - part of the All-in Local Buys: Get some pineapple wine if you go on the outback safari - couldnt find it anywhere else. Mamajuana - is a local drink (you mix rum with some herb barks and honey) its an aphfrodisiac or viagra i think.Cigars: Sweetlove is a good brandVanilla essence - Get them in most supermarketsCoffee: Buy in the local supermarkets Overall: Its a Third World country and thats part of its charm - none of the stresses of western life it seems. The people are relaxed and happy even though they have near to nothing no surprise being surrounded with such nature and beauty every day. Loved it and really miss the place...would like to see the East coast in future!
