“You must be joking!!!”

Petra Gate Hotel & Hostel

This is the first time that I have been let down by the reviews on this website. I am a budget traveller and have stayed in plenty of budget hotels over the past few years, but this has to be the worst. Granted, Nasser was very friendly and on checking in he did warn me it was a budget place and if I wanted to leave he would understand, but could not direct me to another hotel. As our flight had been delayed we arrived rather late so there was no chance of going anywhere else.
The beds were in a terrible condition, the sheets were paper thin and frayed, the cover had both cigarette burns and stains on it. The bathroom had a toilet and being rather tall I could not sit on it properly as I did not fit in the space. The shower practically hangs over the toilet bowl and there was no hot water the next morning.
The lobby has a few chairs in it but these were in a very poor condition and the carpets on the stairs were barely existent. Friends of ours stayed at the Petra Palace hotel for slightly more and they were very happy with the place.
If I was you, I would think carefully before booking here.

Hubby + I stayed here @ Petra Gate Hotel/Hostel for 3 days. in January. Courtesy car to entrance of Petra, but you'll need to get taxi JOD1 back as it is quite a walk uphill. Bed was on the soft side. Paid for breakfast. You can even pay for packed lunch. Dinner costs JOD5. good. Rooms were warm when we returned. Nasser gave us good deal for Turkish bath + organised share taxi to go to Shorak Castle + pass Dana Reserve + swim in the Dead Sea + Mt. Nebo + Madaba. You get a bill when you check out. Cosy place.

“Friendly atmosphere”

I've had one of the best times of my life in this place.
We can not say this is a luxury place: it's a very simple but clean place to stay. Rates are really on budget.
We met people from all over the world (young people, families with small children, seniors, etc.) and the atmosphere was so warm and friendly.
The strengh of this place is Nasser gentleness and his wonderful way of welcoming customers. It seems like your are not customer, but a real friend.
The staff helps you in everything yoy may need.

“There is much better value for money in Petra/Wadi Musa”

I have just returned from a stay in this "hotel" (actally a hostel), based on recommendations on this site and others, and I am very disillusioned. I was not expecting luxary at all, but a basic standard of cleanliness would have been good. The floors look like they had never been cleaned and the sheets on the bed look used and stained. I slept on top of the blankets for our stay.
It is true that Nassar the owner is a lovely, friendly man, as are his staff. However when talking to other travellers in Petra, we discovered that hotels of 3-4* standard were charging about the same money, for a much better service.
Nassar does provide a meal in the evening and a lunch pack for your days traevelling. However you pay as much for these as anywhere else in Wadi Musa, so don't feel obliged to take them. His postcards are also way overpriced compared to shops even in the Petra site itself.
Nassar will provide you with a discount to use the Turkish Bath in a nearby hotel, which I would highly recommend, and also will get you a good deal with a taxi to and from the hostel.
Overall, I would only stay here if other hotels of similar price were full.

The Petra Gate Hotel is a true gem! I have seen many hotels in many countries and this takes the cake. As soon as you walk in the door you are treated not like a customer but part of a family. The only place as special as the sites in Petra is the Petra Gate Hotel. Shukran Naser!!!
