I enjoyed my stay at the GBI. The rooms were a bit worn but they are being gradually updated, i.e. the showers. The carpets should be next on the list. The location was great - close to BART and on a major bus line. I spent most of my time traveling not lounging in my room. I was by myself and felt safe returning late at night to the area. The other hotels that I walked by in area (University Ave and Shattuck) had a number of vagrants in the areas. They provided a few amenities, ironing board, coffee maker, fan, mini fridge and microwave. This is a good choice for a budget traveler. I had one problem with my room concerning the plumbing and the wash basin backing up from another room. They addressed it in a timely manner and moved me to another room with no hassle. Cafe Fanny was on my list of restaurants to try. It was great to have it directly across the street for breakfast. In general, it is a good location for restaurants, shops, parks, and the university.I was happy with my stay at GBI and will return when I travel to Berkeley.
