We booked this resort through the RCI time-share exchange and it was rated as a "Gold Crown Resort". I wouldn't describe it as luxurious, but the room we eventually got was roomy and clean. The resort is across a 4 lane highway from Carlsbad Beach and a train track runs parallel to the beach as well.
The first night we checked in, even though the Carlsbad Seapointe website describes its rooms as only having King size beds (no mention of any other size), the suite to which we were assigned was VERY small, with a double bed (no place to put the luggage in the room) and a pull-out in the den. The furniture in the den was too big for the room and we had to rearrange it to accommodate us (there were only 3 of us in our party).
I immediately called the front desk and they gave me the ol' "there is no guarantee of the type of room you get", but after pressing, I was told that they would move us the next day. True to their word, they came and moved our things the next day. Our second suite was much larger! The bedroom was a decent size with a King size bed. The den and kitchen were larger as well. Both of the units assigned to us had one bathroom, but the second suite had a much larger bathroom with a whirlpool tub and shower stall. Much nicer! We overlooked the beach which provided us with a beautiful view.
It's true that the train ran all day and night and passed by every 30 mins (sounding its horn every time it passed by due to the fact that it had to cross over an intersection right at the entrance of the resort), but we grew accustomed to the sound (even though initially it seemed quite loud) and learned to pretty much sleep through it.
This resort was about 45 minutes from downtown San Diego, five minutes from Carlsbad Village (lots of good restaurants and nice shops), 10 minutes or so from Oceanside (a great surfer city), about 10 to 15 mins from Escondido, and 2 hours (but with traffic add an hour or more) from L.A.. Lots of shopping in the surrounding areas. We weren't too far from anything. Carlsbad is an upscale area of San Diego and our resort was fairly remote from the bustling village area.
There were several grocery stores within a 5 to 10 minute drive, Ralph's and Von's being the largest. Warning: Almost everything shuts down by 10:00 p.m. during the week!
The staff at the resort was quite accommodating. Our room was cleaned once during the week, but towels were replaced and trash was emptied twice a week. Extra towels, pillows, and blankets were provided on request. The staff was very friendly and bent over backwards to provide us with a enjoyable stay.
I would say this is an above-average time-share. Heated pools, heated kiddy pool, recreation area, activities for guests, etc. Definitely a family-oriented resort. If you're looking for luxury or romance, I wouldn't recommend this resort, but if you're looking for clean, roomy and safe, this is the place to go.
Interstate 5 will take you just about anywhere...be warned...traffic in San Diego is a nightmare! You will spend a great deal of time in bumper-to-bumper traffic!!! The traffic we encountered on our trip to LA (which was on a Friday) was worse than that in NY City!
