“Fine in Fresno”

Best Western Village Inn

3 of 5 stars
Monterey, California
Mar 1, 2008

We needed a decent, clean, safe place to stay while we attended a conference. The check in was friendly and accommodating as we had four people who all needed individual receipts. The 2 rooms were both totally renovated - good beds, nice updated bathroom with mini frig, coffeemaker, hairdryer, etc. - nothing fancy but all clean, fresh and everything worked. It was pretty quiet, no real traffic noise in our rooms. Breakfast was basic cereal, frui, but you could make your own waffles. The price was OK and the stay was fine. The desk staff was very nice both at night and in the morning. We did notice they were working outside doing more renovations but we were not disturbed by the construction.

“Okay - We were on a group tour”

Best Western Village Inn

Our group tour of 40+ was booked into this BEST WESTERN because it's 1/2 way between Kings Canyon National Park and Yosemite National Park. The rooms were adequate; the pool was clean, as was the hot tub. The Continental breakfast was okay - the waffle-maker was a nice touch. The staff inadvertently keyed our rooms for 2 nights instead of 3, so we all had to trudge down to the desk to re-key the cards. They were apologetic and friendly about the situation. None of our group became 'grouchy', so I'm sure that helped. There were free newspapers (THE FRESNO BEE) in the lobby w/ lots of travel information on the local areas. A large shopping mall is across the street. There are a couple of good restaurants there, as well as a LONGS DRUGS for purchasing last minute snacks or sundries. DENNY'S is nearby, but the service there was generally slow on a crowded evening. I didn't see the internet access in the room, but the 7-8 TV channels were enough for news and sports. They advertise it as a "Non-Smoking" facility, but I don't think they're very strict about it. The 2nd floor seemed to reek of smoke. Workers outside repairing broken windows at 8:00AM were noisy and 'smoking'. Overall? I wouldn't choose the place, but it WAS part of a tour package, thus the 'group rate' was acceptable.

“Decent for the price!”

We stayed here for 1 night as my brother had a job interview at a local tv station. I will agree that the hotel is old and probably not in the best area of town but it was very clean and suited 3 adults and 2 children just fine for the 1 night. We had 2 queen beds and a roll-a-way for the kids. The bathroom was very clean with a small refrigerator and a machine to heat water for coffee or tea. All the linens were clean and in decent shape. The mattresses appeared to be fairly new and were comfortable. The one box spring looked to be very old and had old, dried gum on one side and the other side had an ugly stain, which they need to replace with a new box spring. Other than that, our only complaint would have to be with the roll-a-way bed that my children slept in. When they laid down on it they both rolled together to the center into a hole where the mattress sunk down. An adult would not have been able to sleep on this at all. I think that they need to invest in something a little bit better. Other then that our stay was fine. The pool area looked to be clean and the size was fine. The area was pretty quiet except for the sound of sirens on a few occasions.

The desk clerk and other staff were very helpful. We needed extra wash cloths and tissue and the desk clerk who had checked us in brought them to our room. Check out was 12:00 but we needed about 30 minutes more while my brother finished up with his interview and the lady at the front desk let us have that extra time and did not charge us anything extra. This is not a 5 star hotel by any means but it is clean and the front desk was very pleasant and helpful. If we were to be in Fresno again and needed to stay somewhere we would not have a problem staying here again.

The donut shop across the street has great donuts.

thankfully only stayed here one night as part of our fly drive.
we arrived around 9pm (drove from vegas) after being stuck in traffic for around 8 hrs!!!
when we arrived (after having phoned ahead at 5pm) the lobby was full of the clerks friends who were all cosying around and having a good old natter...we were checked in with barely a look or word in our direction!!
the place had an unidendifiable stench about it which only got worse on our second floor lobby.
our room was ok....but thats it just ok.
as there was nothing by the way of eats at this place we had to make do with a macdonald's from across the street and some corona from a garage!!
this hotel isn't in the best area either and had i not been so knackered i would probably have been intimidated.
also...no wifi!
first light we checked out and the place looked no better in day light....and if anything the smell in this place had got worse over night.
in hindsight i'm glad we arrived so late!!
