I recently stayed at the Howard Johnson Airport Hotel. It was only a one night stay but I found the hotel to be good value. There is a shuttle bus to the airport and parking if you have a car. The rooms are dated but clean and have a fridge and coffee maker. There is a shop in the hotel lobby for snacks, toiletries etc. Staff were friendly and I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the HJ LAX twice for an overnight stay to and from London - Honolulu 8/1 and 16/1.

As I was just passing through and only wanted somewhere to sleep one night twice, I decided on the best value for my needs was a little way from the main airport chains such as Hilton/ Sheraton with their over inflated prices and decided on the HJ.

For $78 each night I got a clean basic room with acceptable facilities and a free transfer from airport to hotel and return.

If you arrive late pm or evening make show you phone the hotel reception to send the shuttle to your terminal as it only runs on request after 1600. The journey time is only five minutes.

Let me just say that I make it a general practice to AVOID HoJos at all costs. Unfortunately, I was visiting relatives for Thanksgiving, and they were the ones who booked our hotel. We pulled up to the hotel at night, and it looked shabby from the outside. We parked in the parking garage. On the way in, I noticed a Chinese restaurant, but it was empty and looked a little questionable, so I didn't plan on eating there.
When we walked into the lobby, there was an undeniable stench of body odor. We took the elevators, and I didn't notice any mess, blood, or anything else other reviewers mentioned, although it was a bit slow.
The room was old, but it was clean. If we looked out the window, we could watch the airplanes landing at LAX, but there was no noise. Being enamored with metropolitan cities, I was very happy about this.
Contrary to popular belief, the area isn't rough or that unsafe. My husband got restless at 1:00 a.m., and he went out for a walk in the neighborhood with no problems. While he was out, he asked a security guard near the 7-11 about the area, and the security guard told him that the area was actually relatively safe. I can see how the place might seem rough to visitors, but my relatives live only blocks away, and the houses are nice, and the neighborhoods are peaceful.
Overall, the hotel is all right for an overnight stay, but you could probably find much nicer accomodations for a few more dollars.

This hotel has not been updated since the disco era.(or cleaned?) Room was very hot and smelled like something died in it. The bathroom was filthy, with grime around fixtures, and corners of walls. The towels were rough and so small you had to use 2 to dry yourself off. The coffee machine was so gross, the water turned yellow and had floaties in it.(thank God it was broken) The pillows smelled of body odor. If your going out on foot, be cautious, area is very rough. On the good side, it did have a prompt shuttle, as we couldn't get out of there fast enough in the morning. After this one night stay we would never stay at this chain again, even if it was free.
