By now, everyone knows Karen Brown and Rick. They are the backbone of this establishment and pretty well know how to handle the slightest problems. As it turned out, when we checked into our suite, Rick informed us that owing to plumbing difficulties, a residue would build up in our tub if the faucets were turned on full steam. To compensate this apparent flaw, he charged us the rate of a superior double instead ot the higher price of the suite. This is a professional gesture. (The next step would be to replace the carpet or hire someone to get out the numerous stains.)

It was my wife's birthday (I informed the staff of this) and in our room was a display on the mantel Happy Birthday formed with children's blocks. It was only moments later that we would take advantage of the happy hour whose quality would vary from one day to the next. Everyone there was enjoy thenselves enornmously and making plans for dinner. Here was a source of another situation.

When we mentioned that we were going to eat at the Distillery one night and Cetrella the next, the reaction was at best lukewarm. Glad to have been forewarned, we switched to Mezza Luna (a five-minute drive) the first night and to the very popular (Michelin rated) Cafe Gibraltar. When we asked the next day if our reservations had been made, the management replied that yes, they had been made and they were waiting for a phone confirmation. This went on two or three times until we had to call ourselves (around 4:00 p.m.). There was no problem. A new staff member was now working the desk and when we appeared for our wine and hors d'oeuvres, she became embarrassed and informed us how hectic that day was and how sorry she was.... But the meal was excellent despite the uncertainty of getting in.

There are many walks to take and there is always the famous tide pool area, which draws locals and tourists alike. Right next door is a nursery (closed Monday and Tuesday) which welcomes browsing. When it rains, there are innumerable games available and plenty of space for reading. Always bring a good book when you travel!

Breakfast is cooked to order and there is something new each day. If you would like something other than eggs, inform your server and provisions can usually be made. Coffee can be brought up to your room before breakfast if you like, and you get to choose when you would like your meal. A very civilized touch.
