My husband and I and our children stayed here for a couple of nights while we were having our bathroom remodeled (long story). On the outside, this place is trying to be the Del Coronado in San Diego. On the inside, it's a Best Western. There are jacuzzis in every room - right as you step into the doorway. The walls are thin, the pool lukewarm, and the showers small. If you can get a good rate, this place is no worse than other hotels down in Rockaway, but it isn't close to many restaurants (except its own - but we didn't eat there), while Rockaway has that advantage.

This was the worst experience I have had with a Restaurant. I planned a baby shower for my sister for about 30 people. I made the reservations about a 5 weeks in advance. At this time the restaurant manager confirmed the reservation and even faxed the menu to me. He said everthing was okay and that they would put us at the north side of the restaurant. When I called back 2 weeks later to re-confirm he did not even have my party booked. First RED FLAG. I tried to call him 2 more times to discuss the party and menu. I never got a phone call back. Finally, I was able to call him (on his cell phone) to do the final confirmation. I told him the final number and that we were going to do heavy appetizers. He said that was fine.

When we got there the table was not in the area he promised. Rather than being on the north side as promised we were on the south side and the sun was beaming in on us. They do not have shades for that side of the restaurant. The wait staff was okay. They did order and bring the food in a timely manner. Most of the problems started when the manager came in. First of all he would not even communicate with me. He made the waitress come and tell me that they had a cake cutting fee of $3.00 per person. That I did not have a problem with if I had been told in advance. He said that I had to pay or take the cake away. I was mad at that but I did not want to get p---- off about that. Then he came over with a contract that I had never seen or heard of. He said that we have to go by the rules and that there was a charge of $150 for use of the dining room or a $9.00 charge per person because we ordered appetizers not lunch. That really p---- me off because I never received a copy of this contract or even signed one. Also, I ordered about 35-40 orders of appetizers at $9-11 per order. Yes, I had a large group and I ordered over $400 of appetizers. Then he had the waitress come and tell me that they were going to charge us for the bread that they put on the table. She said that he was going to charge us $1.oo for each piece which would be an extra $30 on to the bill. I was really starting to get p-----. When have you ever been charged for the complementy bread? Plus, we did not even ask for the bread.

Then the manager lied to my sister-in-law saying that I did not want to come down to sign the contract because I lived out of town. Well, if he told me about this contract why did he not fax it to me when he faxed the menu???Finally, after I agreed to the cake cutting fee he said that he was going to do me favor and not charge $150 for use of the dining room. What favor was that?? Almost ruining my party and stressing me out?

By far this was the worst experience I have ever had with a manager of any restaurant. I will never go there again and strongly advise anyone wanting to plan a large event there to get everything in writing up front and not pay for anything not discussed on the contract.

We live nearby, so haven't stayed there, but we have enjoyed the restaurant several times for lunch and dinner. We enjoy the Italian recipes and Thai influences. Compared to the Portofino Restaurant up the road (which had lousy timing opening up around the same time as this restaurant, with a similar menu), we prefer the quality of the Beach Resort Restaurant. Our most recent visit was for our wedding anniversary. The views are great, especially at sunset or when the surfers are out on the waves.

The Pacifica Beach Resort and Restaurant is a newer place thats been open for just a year or too. I had checked out the breakfast menu about a year ago, and it was a bit pricey, so I didnt go in...but last week, a guest from Salt Lake City was in town, I was giving the grand tour, so he offered free lunch.

Inside was really nice architecturally. I did not know that up the stairs is a banquet room with a panoramic view. Back downstairs, every seat has a great view. I think my cheeseburger was 8 or 9 bucks. It wasnt as good as some places charging less, but not so bad either. I would say, for Pacifica fare, it was somewhat better burger than you could get at Denny's or Spanky's, but not as good as Westlake Joes. My freind had a shrimp salad, he loved it. Well for free I was quite happy. For lunchtime service was a little slow, just one waitress. I would like to try the Cioppino some day, as you can no longer go visit Little Joes. I would just as well say that if you want better than mediocre food, with an awesome view of surfers near Pedro Point, this does the trick. My assessment is not completely fair, I need to try some more dishes there. Has anyone tried any of the rooms up there? Looks great for a getaway...
