“CONSTRUCTION Again!”

Mayfair Hotel & Spa

I stay here once in a while because of rates. The rooms 2 years ago were in great shape. The hotel gets dirtier and dirtier by the day. WORSE, is its once again a construction site! Noisy, jack hammering, etc. I guess they are adding some expansion to the roof. its a dust bowl of dirt! There is NO staff??? I dont get it? Wear your shoes and bring something to walk around. its so dirty your feet will feel GROSS. The rooms dont have carpet and still SMELL LIKE MOLD. the glass is paper thin so you hear every car with music turned up. The hot tubs never work. I swear even if $50 room rate I wouldnt stay here anymore. It has gone from bad to worse

“Worst experience of my life!”

Mayfair Hotel & Spa

We were so excited about staying at this hotel after seeing the pictures. Our first night there, while out late at a club, we were robbed. Someone got into our room and grabbed $1500 worth of jewelry (which I could not put in the safe as it was shut and I was told that there was no technician available to open it at 10 pm when we checked in). There was no sign of forced entry which means this person had easy access. I spent one whole day of my 2 day trip talking to cops. Our neighbor gave testimony that someone walked into their room at 3 am that same night using a key-card but left when he saw them sitting in their beds. Despite all this, the hotel did nothing to compensate us. They flatly said that it was not their responsibility and that we could sue them if we wanted. Terrible terrible experience!! I've been to a Motel 6 that I would rate higher than this piece of junk.
Other cons: The hot tub in our balcony did not work.

“Noisiest hotel I've stayed”

Mayfair Hotel & Spa

Stayed there for 5 nights to attend the Key Biscayne tennis tournament.

First the good points:
-- Location: very conveniently located within walking distance to all tourist attractions such as malls, restaurants and a book store/coffee shop. No need to rent a car since the parking fee was 25 USD a night.
-- Bed & Bath: good mattress with smooth and soft sheets. The bathroom was spacious with first class amenities and thick towels.
-- Big screen plasma TV
-- Balcony: convenient for smokers since smoking was not allowed inside the room.

Now the bad points:
Very noisy
-- From the construction: workers started around 7:30-8:00 drilling on the rooftop. The hotel information booklet talked about a rooftop swimming pool scheduled to open in 2006! The drilling shook walls and was so loud that at checking counter on the first floor, we could not hear what the clerks said. Guest rooms were on higher floor and we were not the only ones complained.
-- From hotel service people: on weekend, the sound of live music from ground floor came up the atrium made it impossible for relaxing or sleeping late. In the morning, cleaning and maintenance folks made ruckus dragging service carts on tiled floor in hallways
-- From neighbor apartments/condos and the surrounding malls: people yelling and fighting into wee hours, cars screeching and honking.
-- Slow internet connection: the hotel claimed to have wireless connection but the signal was so slow that guests had hard time getting connected. The alternatives were to use the business center computer and got charged by the hour or unplugged the TV, used its hardwire connection and got charged also. Some people took laptops to the lobby but it was very crowded with only a few chairs. Best alternative was taking your laptop to the bookstore next door, their wireless was free and their coffee and pastries were great.
--The room we had was so small that it could barely fit a king bed. The hotel may have bigger and quieter rooms but they did not assign those to folks getting rooms through the tennis tournament travel service.

“Dingy, tired too pricy lacking in promised atmosphere and amenities”

Mayfair Hotel & Spa

Sheets felt inferior, peebly. Duvet and pillows were dingy. Jacuzzi was broken; the chair next to it was dingy. The air conditioning controls were not satisfactory, and I came home with a sinus infection. I doubt that it is a coincidence. The pool was not available. I knew that when I went, but not when I booked. By the time I found out, it was too late to get another hotel. A loud party in the center of the lobby kept us awake. No laundry bags or service were provided. The meal and service in the Ginger Grove Restaurant were great. The computer was down so our credit card was charged for the actual fee plus an additional hold. The telephones for services did not work. One had to call the front desk on speaker phone for services. The wake-up call was pleasantly surprising. A person was on the other end wishing us a good morning. The people at the front desk were very pleasant and competent. Overall, I would not give this hotel above a 3 STAR. It has long ago seen its heyday, and is living on its past laurels. Not worth the price.

“If The Olive Garden is for you, so is the Mayfair”

Mayfair Hotel & Spa

This is by NO means a 4 star hotel......2 at best.
After we checked in & asked for some recommendations for lunch, we knew we were in trouble from the start. The concierge told us about Hooters & The Cheesecake Factory as good options for lunch. It went downhill from there. To say that the help at the Front Desk is help at all is comical. They can't help you with a car service, lunch/dinner recommendations for any of the surrounding areas near Coconut Grove. We found out there was a Houston's Restaurant in the nearby Coral Gables & they had never even heard of it before (another bad sign).

Ok, so besides the fact that no one has ANY taste that works there....let's start with the maid service. We ordered breakfast room service twice while were there and for some off reason the maids liked to leave the breakfast cereal boxes (which were empty) and select juice glasses (that had been used) in our room. Maybe they thought we would like to clean glasses in the bathroom sink? Maybe they thought we were going to recycle the mini cereal boxes? Not sure. We had also purchased 2 bottles of wine from a nearby liquor store. Again, the empty bottles would not be thrown away during our entire 3 day stay. It became a joke to us how many little boxes, glasses & bottles would pile up at this little table.

On another note, the language barrier also was quite annoying. My husband speaks a little Spainish, but I'm not too sure which language was being spoken most of the time, as they could not understand basic Spainish or what "more towels please" meant. One of the hand towels was dirty when we first arrived. I guess the highly detailed maid service missed that one...shocker.

Now onto the noise level. Wow, don't plan on getting a peaceful sleep while you're there. It just won't happen. The AC didn't work very well either. So don't plan on staying cool at night. In fact you'll almost be sweating. If you want a nice hotel lobby to hang in while you're waiting for the car service (that you had to arrange yourself) not going to happen either. Actually there really isn't much of a lobby at all. A few dated chairs with bad fabric. So as you can see, we didn't enjoy our stay there at all....for multiple reasons. How this hotel can rate themselves a 4 out of 5 stars in beyond me.
