“An amazing stay”

My stay here was great. Traveling alone, the hotel made sure I was in good hands. Everyone at the front desk (except one, but I'll remain him nameless-FYI, there IS a public bus that goes to the airport) were very helpful, very nice, and very informative on the area. Ana Maria helped me book my Everglades tour through the hotel before I checked in which was fast and easy. The "infamous" Angelo is a genius on the area. Jorge has a fun sense of humor, and led me to splurge on pretty good food at Touch restaurant (where I was also super spoiled by the manager dude). I had an amazing philosophical conversation about life with David at 4am. I can't complain about free breakfast in the morning, nor can I complain about the $20 "resort fee." Renting umbrellas at the beach is around $30 for a couple hours anyway, and I don't usually travel on an airplane with a huge beach umbrella. It's convenient, and it's not THAT expensive.

I know it was just luck, but I got upgraded from a 'superior' room to a suite! The suite wasn't that big, but it was super duper big for just myself. The whole layout of the room, the furniture, the basket of goodies and the selection of liquor and wine were just fabulous. The beer in the fridge isn't that expensive, compared to restaurants in the area too!

It's a nice 3 block walk to the beach. I didn't mind it. I think most of the hotels on the beach (on Ocean Ave) looked a little trashy, and there was all this construction going on. This hotel is located just a tad bit more inland of all that mess and all the people. I dug it.

I know I got a good deal through the website, and I would definitely recommend this hotel to others and even come back again.

“Was very disappointed”

Hotel Astor

Booked this hotel through Perfect Escapes, stayed for 3 nights.Part of the package with Perfect Escapes that if available you receive early check in, late check out, welcome gift and complimentary room upgrade which sounded great when i booked the room.

We arrived on the evening so the early check in wasnt needed , Room upgrade wasnt available either (the hotel was not full so unsure why we did not receive this) we did receive welcome gift of a plate of fruit which was a nice touch, room was small, quite dark due to poor lighting and air con dial was broke front kept falling off dumped our cases and went out along Ocean Drive. Came back around midnight, my husband was getting into bed and there was blood on the sheets, clearly the bed had not been changed- called front desk and spoke with Jose who immediately came to our room removed the sheet and apologised several times also advising that housekeeping were unavailable at this time so couldnt put new bedding on but new bedding would be put on our bed the next day- assuring me the remainder of the bedding the quilt and pillows were clean, the bedding didnt feel clean and felt very grubby i went to bed fully dressed that night. the remainder bedding definately was not clean In hindsight i felt that we should immediately have been given an alternative room and i should have complained about this however considering the customer service awards they have received perhaps being offered a clean room should have been an automatic . Clean bedding was provided the next day but my opinion had already been made about the hotel and nothing had been offered by the hotel to change this. The staff were very courteous but i do not feel go out of their way to help. There was a resort fee of $20 plus tax despite me being quoted by perfect escapes as $10 plus tax and the valet parking was extortionate at $25 per night and 15 minute wait for car so god knows where this was parked.

On the day of checkout i asked for a late checkout which is part of the package if available I wanted to check out at 2.30 pm instead of 12.00pm i was advised the latest i could check out was 1.00pm and any later i would incur charges i explained that as part of my package i would receive complimentary late check out and Jose advised this was only applicable if available and if i wanted any later he would need to charge me- if the room isnt available why would it be available if i was willing to pay?. I had to settle for a 1pm check out and then received a call at 12.30 to remind me check out was 1pm.

The location of the hotel is good ,didnt use the beach towels etc so having the $20 resort fee really didnt make any difference to my stay except to my pocket!!! even the paper due to be delivered every morning (cost covered in the resort fee) was only delivered 2 days out of 3.

Room temperature varied also it was either freezing or boiling during the night often going between the 2.

I did complete a comment card with the above comments but not sure whether this will be read so that is why i have added on here.

“Three and 3/4 stars out of 5”

Hotel Astor

4 of 5 stars
New York City, New York

This is a great place and I really wanted to give it four stars except my room needed a soft renovation for me to be willing to give a full four stars. If they painted my room, did a heavy duty steam clean or replaced the carpet and replaced the slip covers on the furniture and furniture pillows as well as the sheets with new ones, this would be four star for sure. To be clear, nothing was dirty or nasty, just a room that had been partied in and well cleaned a few times too many......
I was here in the off season so I'm sure that helped. I had a junior suite which was worth the extra few dollars. They claim the windows are double glazed for quietness, but my bathroom window seemed to be missing it. Keeping the door closed made a difference.
The mini bar was stocked with the best selection I've ever seen although prices were typically expensive. The staff was really outstanding, introducing themselves, offering assistance and always with a smile. The AC kept the room so cold I had to turn it down to low. The bed was comfortable except the sheets have been used a bit past their prime, but to reiterate, they were clean.
Unlike the previous poster, I was informed of the $20 resort fee at check in and had to initial that I saw it which was fair. This place gives a bunch of extras that really add value if you use them. I liked the newspaper in the morning, the $10 credit for the restaurant for breakfast which was quite good, the towels and the pre-paid hassle free lounge chair on the beach (usually around $20 per person with an umbrella...) The location is great, the style a few years old but for the price I paid totally fine. I would definately make this my place to stay in S. Beach if I didn't absolutely need a pool to make my stay enjoyable (although you can sneak into one fairly easily if you don't make a big deal about it....)

“There are flaws and lots of extras to pay!”

Hotel Astor

Jun 29, 2008

Although i enjoyed staying at this hotel as it was central and the staff were very friendly, I do think there are a few flaws:

1) The resort fee of $20 a night seemed a bit of a rip off, as we never used the beach towels/sun bed during the stay as it rained the whole time. So $20 for a newspaper (the only thing we used) seemed a total rip off! I would rather this be included in the room rate.
2) You are given $10 credit for breakfast per person- again, as long as you go for the continental option its free, but we didn't....so the breakfast ended up costing $50 (minus the $20 credit we had)! Still this was quite expensive for egg benedict, and eggs on toast, 2 coffees and 2 orange!
3) The room had a big gap under the door and we were continually hearing banging doors in the corridor. I would hate to stay here at the weekend when people are getting in drunk.
4) As our bedrooms overlooked another block, the curtain was constantly closed as otherwise people could see into our room....this made it very dark...and the lighting in the room isn't bright.
5) Valet parking is $25 - probably best to go with this, as there is no parking around.
All in all i would probably recommend staying in this hotel only if i had a good rate (i.e. <$150), but otherwise would suggest shopping around as its overrated.

“Nice Hotel, Great Location, Beware the Resort Fee”

Hotel Astor

Jun 21, 2008

I stayed at the Astor for 5 nites during a recent vacation in Miami. Overall I thought the Hotel was pleasurable, as the rooms were very cozy and the beds very comfortable. One weird thing was that the shower only has a half glass door, so the floor got extremely wet after taking a shower. It was a minor annoyance, but not enough to cause any sort of headache.

The location was great, right on Washington Ave (2 blocks from the beach) and close to Lincoln Road and all the other attractions. T

The room includes access to the beach which includes beach chairs with umbrellas and towels. This was a nice feature as it gets really hot on the beach and the umbrella provides some much needed shade. They also provide tickets which get you $20 off breakfast at the restaurant at the hotel (Jolley). The continental breakfast costs $10/person but doesn't fill you up, so expect to spend at least $25 on breakfast per day if you decide to eat here. The food is actually quite good, and we ended up eating breakfast here almost every day. There are a few places along ocean drive that have breakfast for about 5 bucks but the food isn't as good.

Do note; with all these amenities there comes a $20 a day resort fee which i thought was really kind of a joke; especially since they don't tell you about it at check in and I wasn't informed when i booked the trip thru priceline. They don't even have a pool, so to charge a resort fee is a bit ridiculous. If it weren't for the daily fee, i would recommend this place without constraint. I would also recommend anyone staying down in Miami to try and find a place with a pool. It gets really hot (especially in the summer) and having access to a pool is really key. (We actually ended up sneaking into one along the beach....Shhhh!!!)....
