First things first...My wife and I did not choose the Anantara, it was chosen for us...but that's a different story. As a hotel it is sensational....all the modern stuff that make staying in a 5 star hotel a real pleasure...a huge 82 sqm room with a day bed and a spa bath on the balcony, LCD TV, Bose Sound System, the most comfortable bed and a great and huge bathroom with all the ammenities that you will need...free wi-fi anywhere, and free use of the Mac in the library downstairs....Like I said, a sensational hotel....but not a great resort.
If you went for a walk along the beach towards the Ku De Ta and had a look at the other great hotels just along the Beach, like The Legian or The Oberoi, then they are what I would call resorts. Set on Acreage not square meters is what helps with the ambiance. The Anantara only had a very small grass area with about 4 or 5 double sun lounges to sit on. The other double sun lounges are a decking in front of the main pool in front of the hotel. Not really a big area to be in.
Sometimes, and with no disrespect to the others hotel guests, you would just want to be away from the crowd...well, you couldn't really do that at the Anantara.
Yes there are 3 pools at the Anantara, but only one of them ever gets any sun, and the other 2 only gets half sun. But those 2 pools can be accessed from certain rooms, so you probably wouldn't want people there.
Again, having said that, you do have the whole beach right in front of you where you can pull up a sun lounge and be fairly alone...! apart from the hawkers...!
This hotel was not over run with children, and I can't really see that it ever would be...much to our joy!! (no offence meant to children or parents)
After all of the above, it must be pointed out that the staff are soooooo friendly and their service was excellent and the food likewise...! And the Sunset Lounge on the roof would have to have the best view of the Bali sunset that you will ever see...!!
You can walk for 30 minutes along the beach and be in the middle of Kuta, or walk 10 minutes down the road that leads to the hotel, and find plenty of places to eat and drink including an ATM, convenience store and a laundry just around the corner. A taxi ride to or from Kuta would cost about 25,000 rupiah(metered taxi) or 40,000 rupiah if you haggled...??? , breakast at the hotel was US$25 (we got that thrown in for nothing), or you could go to any of the restaurants and pay about AUS$5...
Would we go back...absolutely....my wife and I just sat by the pool all day, read books, slept, drank and watched the surf....!!! What better way to relax....!! Just don't expect a resort, expect a senstaional 5 star hotel instead....!!!
