“Relaxing Camp”

Camp Okavango

4 of 5 stars
Sydney, Australia
Jun 29, 2008

This was one of seven lodges we stayed at. I was a bit disappointed, in that our purpose in staying at these lodges was to see game. Camp Okavango however does not do game drives. It has a walk across an island, a relaxing poling across a shallow river bed, and fishing. Other than that, you are not going to see much game.

The lodge was well run, and the rooms were comfortable, and of a good standard. Because lions and other game can walk through the camp, one has to be accompanied when walking between the main buildings and the rooms after dark.

I was also last in the Okavango some 30 years ago, and remembered towering trees covered with fish eagles. We did not see any landscape like that at Camp O, other than a short section of a riverbank seen while fishing. The fishing was fun, even though we had to return most of the fish as they were undersize.

We were transported between Camp Moremi and Camp Okavango by boat. Both my partner and I rather felt we had seen enough of reeds after this three hour trip.

“a fantastic experience”

Camp Okavango

Camp Okavango was a fabulous experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable - the walking safari was amazing (and I was relieved not to come across any crocodiles whilst walking)
We were made to feel really welcome by Michelle and MC and the rest of their team.
The flight from Kasane was a highlight as was the mokoro trip!
A great start to our holiday in Africa!

I would like to preempt my entry by stating that this experience may be a reflection of the time of our visit and may not be indicative of high season/dry season.

We stayed two nights at Camp O. We chose this accommodation based on availability due to the very last minute planning of this trip. End of October is is when the first rain begins to fall and is the period when some of the wildlife does migrate out of the okavango delta area.

The tented cabins were comfortable and clean. There is an attached bathroom. The rooms are cleaned twice and there is a turn-down service. The view outside of our room was spectacular especially at sun set. One falls asleep and wakes up to a cacophany of sounds that is easy to get used to.

The delta is beautiful, but wildlife was not plentiful. We did enjoy the variety of birds both at the camp and during our boat rides. The camp offers mokoro rides, speedboat ride and a walking safari. We had occasional crocodile sightings, but did not see any hippos during the boat rides that is until our boat transfer to another camp. Actually, there is a house hippo that does make its appearance every night for dinner grazing the grass in the compound-that was a rare treat.

The walking safari is one of our highlights of this trip. It is an incredible experience:It consisted of a guide, tracker and us on an "island" on foot (brisk walk) tracking animals for two hours. It is an intimate experience of the bush. We came across elephants, water buffalo, warthogs, lechwe etc. We learned that people have seen lions and leopards during this safari previously.

The staff are friendly; the food was good.

The boat transfer between Camp O and another camp was also a highlight. It yielded sightings of elephants, hippos, crocs, and many species of birds.

Camp Okavango

We enjoyed our 3 nights at Camp Okavango and every trip out on the water or on the island. The guides are all extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and Judy & Kobus great hosts. The Delta was made even more special to us because we stayed here, it was definitely one of the highlights of our Africa trip.

Great Camp, nice set up and great location. The baboons destroyed things when they had the chance, never leave food in the rooms!
