“Gorgeous Renovation - average value”

Clarion Collection Grand Royale Hotel

Visiting SUNY/Binghamton for a tour and needed a reasonable place to stay. Other hotels were booked. The photos on the website looked great. I love historical buildings so this hotel certainly fit the bill. Rate was just $89 but I used my points so it was free! Loved the renovations, however, the first floor and mezzanine areas are under-utilized. Room was clean. Not a large room, beds were low to the ground and the comforters are dated, but not too bad either. Temperature was warm and the fan unit was very old and barely worked. Needs replacement. Bathroom average size. Nice to have a fridge and microwave without cost though we didn't need them. Hotel was eerily quiet. Walked around out back and was told by a gentleman that it was NOT safe for women to be in that area at night. ??? Walking around the neighborhood was strange...NOBODY in sight. If you like burgers and beer, the neighborhood is okay. Otherwise, there are no restaurants open at night. Binghamton is a great city if you are into architecture. Would recommend this for a one night stay but not much else. Has alot of potential though.

“Perfectly satisfactory stay, except for State St noise”

Clarion Collection Grand Royale Hotel

Aug 5, 2007

The Grand Royale Hotel is a nice renovation of the former City Hall, so it's right downtown. The rooms are large and well-equipped with a small refrigerator and microwave, in addition to the standard coffee maker, hair dryer & iron. Our room only had a shower, but that's all we needed. The continental breakfast is limited to toast and cold items. One warning: ask for a room away from State Street. There's a nightclub and pub across from the hotel and they were very busy with lots of noise and people spilling into the street (and the police just sat and watched mostly).

“Best in Binghamton!”

Clarion Collection Grand Royale Hotel

Sep 27, 2006

I stayed for an extended weekend September, 2006. The staff was extremely helpful in booking my room insuring I had the extras I wanted and was near family members who were guests. The rooms were spacious, quiet and had everything necessary-hair dryer, small safe, great beds in this attractive historic property. Parking was convenient-one inconvenience-the parking garage-city owned?-had a broken elevator. A good hotel kitchen and restaurant would have earned this property 5 stars from me-and believe me, Binghamton could use a good restaurant downtown!

“Great Value and unusual”

Clarion Collection Grand Royale Hotel

This is an unusual hotel as it is a conversion of the old town hall. We stayed one night on route from Niagra Falls to Manhattan and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Our family had 3 different rooms and all were very good, spacious and most importantly clean. When we arrived there was a very cheerful welcome and the building is in good condition with some impressive public areas. Excellent value for money. We had dinner at J Michaels which is just 2 minutes walk away and the restaurant was excellent. One thing to be aware of is that the hotel is surrounded by local bars which the students use and get very busy and somewhat noisy, once in the hotel and your room though things are quiet. I would stay again and can recommend.

“A Very Unpleasant Room”

Clarion Collection Grand Royale Hotel

Severna Park, md

I was looking forward to a stay in this restored historic building after directly being involved in the restoration of Library Of Congress And Union Train Station in DC. No effort for any touch of class in the $200+ night 2 level suite that resmbled a dungeon
with no windows. Furniture was mismatched of no particular era and the black vinyl sofa was yard sale quality. They must have left the layout restoration to a couple of local carpenters who fabricated a sleep loft out of stained plywood and who knows what staircase. The bathroom underneath is adequate but once you finish your shower - wrap a towel and head up the staircase as the loft bedroom is the only dressing area. If you are inclined to need the bathroom during the night the staircase down awaits you. Why they plopped a hot tub sized jacuzzi in the downstairs living area outside the bathroom defies the imagination. The smaller standard rooms may offer some charm but this renovation resembled a Greyhound bus station waiting room.
