My brother, myself , and our spouses decided to take a vacation in the Finger Lakes of NY and looked on-line at the b&b options on the Ithaca Chamber of Commerce website. We liked the website for the Rogue's Harbor Inn and decided to make reservations to spend a few nights there, selecting two rooms for two nights each.
When we arrived, we noticed that the outside seemed a bit more run-down than the photo on-line had appeared. The inside however was clean and comfortable. The rooms were nicely decorated.
I knew our bathroom would be shared with another room (my brother's) and I was OK with that, assuming the bathroom was in-between the two rooms. The bathroom(s) were across from my brother's room and nicely divided into two separate rooms - one with toilet and sink, one with toilet and shower stall. The location of the bathrooms was difficult for me - from my room, they were around the corner and down the hall. I was uncomfortable with this because it seemed like a very long distance at 2 am - although robes were available in the closet in our room.
The bathrooms were nice and clean, appearing to be newly renovated. I wear contact lenses and could not find a good, flat place in either bathroom to place my contact lens supplies to perform that morning/evening ritual. The only flat surfaces were over the toilet (not a good place for contact lenses, trust me!) OR on a low, 2 foot high, 8" round table tucked in the corner .
One of the things I like best about a b&b is chatting with the owner and other guests in a parlor or common room. Because there was no other room, we used the breakfast room for our evening social time with my brother and his wife. We did not have the opportunity to meet the owner at all during our stay and there didn't seem to be any encouragement to socialize with the other b&b guests either. I have stayed in a few b&bs before and for me, part of the attraction to a b&b is chatting with the owner and the other guests. I missed that very much.
Continental breakfast was fresh fruit cups, scones and muffins, cold cereal, and hard-boiled eggs. Very nice but, again I wished for a more personal touch. The morning manager came in to say hello while we were eating but left again and that was it.
We did appreciate the on-line special that allowed us a bottle of wine with our dinner. Although dinner is not included, we chose to have dinner at the Inn our first night, hoping to make the whole experience a little more personal. Our server directed us to the wine list and to the wines from which we could choose. She said the wines were all local wines. When we got our wine, we happened to read the label and it turned out the wine was from Long Island. Yes, this is a NY wine but certainly not "local" - we were hoping for a Finger Lakes wine. The server assured us the wine was not from Long Island but from a local vineyard - the label did not indicate that.
Overall, the Inn was nice and comfortable, and the staff we met were very helpful and polite. There was however, nothing to set this place apart and make me want to return or recommend it to someone else. Because of the bathroom issues and because our stay did not have the personal touch I'd hoped for, I would probably not return. It felt more like I was staying in a room over a restaurant/bar and less like I was staying in a b&b.
