“Excellent service”

We stayed at Tropical hotel for 10 days in November 2007. At arrival at the hotel we were greeted by the assistant manager and seated in the lobby area. We were given cold towels and a cool fruit cocktail- nice touch. All the check in formalities were completed promptly and within 15 minutes were being shown to our room well before the alloted check in time. The room was pleasant ,airy and very clean, not huge but perfectly adequate. It had a big balcony with steps down to a grassed area which lead straight to the beach. The bathroom was clean with a great shower, no toiletries but we brought our own anyway. The valet that cleaned our room daily was second to none, we have never had a room cleaned and tidied so beautifully, all clothes left out perfectly folded and put away!!The beach was a little dissapointing as it was small and lots of seaweed but there were clear patches and swimming was ok. A small note as with many places that are near reefs, there is a lot of coral that is washed up and quite sharp. We took aqua shoes that really helped. The best thing about this hotel is the level of service. As it is a small hotel, the staff get to know you and your preferences and nothing is ever to much trouble!!! We particularly enjoyed the food, not a huge choice but always beautifully presented and delicious!!!

It is very close to il aux cerfs and the hotel has a free boat trip there 3 times a day, it is perfect for swimming, snorkeling and watersports as well as being very beautiful!! The hotel has some free watersports including laser dinghys, pedaloes and canoes. The boat house staff are more than wiling to instruct at any time.

The hotel group have their own island at the south and run a day trip there. You are taken by speed boat around the coast and get the chance to see some of the beautiful scenery. This really is a great trip to a stunning island where you are greeted with a champagne reception, taken to marine park to snorkel, relax on comfy daybeds or sunloungers
and given a fabulous bbq lunch. You practically have your own waiter who can't do enough for you!!!! We were there on a quiet day, some days there may be more guests on the island.

If you want 5 star luxury then this is not the hotel for you. We personally found that the great service, great food and excellent location made this a very enjoyable stay!!!

“Knockout staff”

Thisis a good budget hotel with the most attentive staff I have seen from any hotel anywhere in the world. By the end of 2 weeks they are friends and the rest of the islanders go beyond the pail in terms of being helpful to the visitor

The hotel is a bit shabby, it does need a bit of money spent on it but you pays yer money you takes yer choice.

The food is average, breakfasts good, evening meals a bit disappointing.Sunbeds outside the rooms are good and the trip to the Ile aux Cerfs is worth it as it is free and there are any number of beautiful beaches there.

Book a trip to the hotels own island as that is great as dolphins follow you along the coast and it is brilliant.

NB we went in August and the east coast has a strong wind for 3 months at that time of year on a daily basis but there are plenty of sheltered locations to keep the wind at bay.

“Only okay if you're on a budget”

I had really high expectations of our holiday in Mauritius but had we stayed here the whole week as planned, then they would not have been met. By the second day I was starting to wonder how to explain to friends how we had only managed to have an 'okay' time in Paradise.

To start on the positive side the food is great and the staff are very friendly. The rooms face the sea which means you can gaze at the beautilful waves and white sand from your bed. However there were some problems that these plus points could not outweigh.

The whole place suffers from lack of a recent update. The decor of the rooms is scruffy, the toilet seat was cracked and bent when we sat on it (no we're not overweight!). The bedding included an old brown blanket which may have not been laundered. The pool area was far from idyllic as being quite small there weren't many areas for sitting out and the high walls meant there wasn't much scenery to look at. (As the beach was too windy the week we were there, this area of the hotel was quite important to us.) The refurbishment was required even down to the leather wallets that your dinner receipt came in - I don't know about you but I don't really appreciate the inside of them being covered in biro graffiti with things like "Jo from Morpeth was here"! Also location wise, we were quite dependent on the bar here as we didn't find anything else locally which meant we had to listen to the groups of other holiday makers singing along with the guitar entertainers in broken English to the Beatles - not really a Mauritian experience!
Thankfully our rep took pity and we were moved to another hotel on our 2nd day. If you really want to go to Mauritius but don't want to spend much then here is fine, but if you can afford a bit more then go elsewhere.

“Small and Friendly”

Very friendly, small hotel, staff as good as, if not better than many 5 star hotel staff. All inclusive package, good value. Rooms, average size, ground floor rooms have large patio area, and almost private lawned area. Beds extremely large - easy to loose your partner !. Food a little strange - a mix of nouveau cuisine and something else !, however very plentiful, and well cooked (No "tummy" problems). Beach almost non existant, but large lawned area in front of rooms, facing sea. Free boat trips to an island, 20 minutes, with superb beach. Evening entertainment every evening, and plenty of seating.
Towels and sunbeds provided, and plentiful, so no squabbles, and no need to get up early to get them!
Private transfer to airport recommended.

“Quiet and Isolated”

Hotel Tropical

Just got back with my wife from 2 weeks in Mauritius staying at the Tropical Hotel upon arrival it is immediately noticable how small the Hotel is. Being only 60 rooms in size the Hotel is friendly and very easy to make new friends , unlike the hustle and bustle of bigger hotels where you very rarely see the same face twice.

The rooms are clean and comfortable with a double bed that could comfortably fit 5 people, all rooms face the sea and come with there own small patio.

The beach is less than 20 metres from your door but don't get excited it is tiny and constanly covered in seaweed but sun loungers are abundant on the grassed areas. The Tropical staff are excellent and make every effort to make your stay enjoyable .

We opted for the all inclusive package as the Hotel is quite isolated there is very little or no choice to sample pleasures outside the hotel for eg: Restaurants the village close by offers minimal choice.
The Hotel food is average with the main evening being dissapointing on a number of occasions, on my return i found i had lost weight.

Mauritius is seen as a dream destination by most travellers, overall the island is identical to most Carribean islands the people are friendly but suffers from the rip off culture taking the opinion that if your there you must be wealthy. There are far better islands to visit in the world which are prettier and less expensive and better quality Koh Samui for instance.

All said and done the Tropical was quiet and friendly and i met some fabulous people but i won't be returning
