We chose this hotel for the second half of our honeymoon after being married at the Hotel Brisas del Mar in Zihuatanejo. It was a perfect complement to that town in every way--cool, breezy weather which felt wonderful after a few days on the beach; a quiet, peaceful atmosphere which was perfect for us to read, take long walks, and just unwind. We felt like we could move at our own pace and observe the fascinating local culture.

Everything was very authentic and very affordable, and the Meson was a wonderful "home" to come back to each afternoon and build a fire and take a nap during the brief daily thunderstorm. Alfredo and his wife were delightful hosts and we really enjoyed their company. We appreciated the ability to use the internet in the hotel lobby but found we also were glad for the ability to detach from the compulsion to check email etc while we were in our room.

The town is very conducive to walking and exploring, and has some beautiful churches and amazing local food. We became addicted to the homemade tamales and the (very rich) ice cream!

One note is that it is definitely a town where at least some Spanish is a prerequisite, but with a basic knowledge we could function pretty well in restaurants, cabs, shops, etc. For us it was a challenge that we enjoyed, and we would definitely return to this town and this hotel again!

I loved the Meson de San Antonio! My clean, quiet (except for the native celebration complete with immense firecrackers beyond the hotel's control), beautifully decorated room, with comfortable bed, large bathroom with good water pressure in the shower, wi-fi, a working fireplace, cable TV with what must have been 100 channels, outdoor hacienda garden area for sitting, large main room, and Alfredo -- a most helpful host. As I recall the story of the Meson it was an eighteenth century inn that the new owners were restoring. I felt like I was transported to an earlier time and a place far away from my life in the USA whenever I entered the large double doors that led from the street. The price was a bargain for what I had. Alfredo or the front desk clerk were helpful with hints on what to do and in making travel plans. It was nice to have coffee in the morning, even though the continental breakfast (cookies or sweet rolls) were not the best feature of the Meson.

My husband and I had our 1st trip out of the United States last fall (late Sept. into Oct. '06) and had the truly good fortune of starting our trip in Patzcuaro at the Hotel Meson de San Antonio. After a loooong trip to town from DF, we were received very graciously and very late (after midnight!) by Jorge and shown to a wonderful room in the corner (#5, as I recall). The next morning, to our delight, there was a beautiful courtyard filled w/ fruit trees and lovely plants of all types. There were fresh delicious sweet breads and coffee evey morning along w/ beautiful benches to sit on and take in the day. Jorge and his family are kind, generous and knowlegable people willing to offer suggestions and guidance about other towns to visit and a great history of the area. Jorge has a vast knowledge of agriculture and history and was fun and interesting to converse with. The room was fantastic, with high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, massive shower stall, large comfortable bed, sitting area and a fireplace. There is also a bar in an underground cavern below the hotel w/ a bizarre and interesting ambience. They were newly opened & still renovating some rooms a bit when we were there, and w/ no debit/credit card machines we had to pay in cash at the end of our stay (only $47/nite!!) but this had no real impact on our trip. In fact, most of Patz. functioned on a cash basis, which is different that the U.S., but there are ATM's everywhere w/ nominal fees. Jorges son (sorry, I can't remember his name ; <) was so helpful getting us set up in a nice central location for our next journey into Morelia that we are very grateful to him. He had a great knowlede of other parts of his country that were most helpful to us as novice travelers. I would encourage anyone exploring central Mexico to stop in Patz. (the state of Michoacan) and check out this wonderful hotel.

We had a lovely stay in Patzcuaro at the Meson de San Antonio. We were there 04/01-04/04, 2007. We had a room with 3 double beds for our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids). The decor was charming and tasteful, with lots of pretty details. It had cable TV and a fireplace too. We paid $750 pesos, which is about $65 usd for our triple room. We had continental breakfast included everyday and free internet. There is a lovely living room with a fireplace, a dining table and a kitchen with micro and fridge, and all this is available for anyone to use. The hotel is just steps away from the Basilica and walking distance (about 2 blocks) from the main plazas. This was perfect since the plazas are too crowded. The owners are always there to help you with anything you might need, and they are really knowledgeable on the surroundings. We will definitely go back.
