“Loved the Spa!”

Sebel Resort & Spa Hawkesbury

4 of 5 stars
Sydney, Australia
Jan 28, 2008

We booked a Courtyard Getaway Package via the hotel website which cost $290 per night, this included a 3 course dinner and breakfast.

The hotel is set in very nice surrounds, and as previous people have mentioned it caters for weddings, there was one on when we arrived, but we hardly noticed them at all during our stay.

The room was very good and spacious. The room was in good condition, and clean, the bed in particular was excellent. However, the room did not let in much light with some 2 small windows which made it feel a bit dark and dingy during the day time. The room had no bath, but the shower is very big, you can fit 2 people in easily, and has the biggest shower head I have ever seen!

The food at the Harvest restaurant was excellent, not good if you are a vegetarian though. The service was very slow though, which they apologised for throughout the night, it sounded like they were busy catering for the wedding as well. The breakfast is also excellent, with plenty of choice. The juice machine which you can operate yourself was a nice touch.

There is a small pool in the courtyard, as well as a few sun loungers, no privacy though as its right next to the walkway to the rooms.

We also used the Thalgo Spa, which I cannot recommend enough. You will feel pampered and relaxed after your session, make sure you book ahead though as it gets booked up quick.

Overall, its a great place to go to relax and play golf with 2 courses within walking distance. The only downside is the service levels, there was no one in the bar when we went, and had to go to the front desk to ask for the bar person. We then went back 15 mins later when she never turned up to ask again!

A final word of warning, they also charge 15% extra for service on bank holidays, which I think is a ridiculous practice for a hotel. Which given the level of service there, you will feel particularly annoyed about if you went on a bank holiday.

“Pretty Good - no complaints really”

Stayed there for NYE 2007. Booked a package through wotif for a total of $293. This gave us accomodation for one night (NYE) an evening meal and a buffet breakfast.

There was a little confusion on check-in about what time our dinner was booked for. It all got sorted out in the end but if you're on this deal you should confirm on check in.

We got a courtyard room which was well appointed and all as expected (apparently barracks rooms are pretty small).

Didn't use the pool/gym - the grounds are nice.

Breakfast was excellent - plenty of food laid on in a decent size room etc. All up we were happy!

“Good hotel - fantastic restaurant - overall excellent NYE”

We stayed at the Sebel for NYE 2007 in a Courtyard room - our package included a 3 course dinner at the Harvest Restaurant and buffet breakfast.

The room was standard - King sized bed (very comfortable), bathroom was functional - though a little dated.

Dinner at the Harvest Restaurant was fantastic - on par with many one-hat restaurants in Sydney. Service staff were also excellent. Wine list had a good range of choices.

We were disappointed that the day spa on site was closed on NYE and the next few days.

Overall an excellent experience - make sure you book with the hotel direct via their website. We looked at booking via last-minute booking websites and it was more expensive.

“Better than expected”

We attended a wedding at the Sebel and it is somewhat of a wedding factory, although they were sufficiently separate to be discrete. However, the (refurbished) rooms that we and our friends stayed in for two nights were very clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was also very good and the grounds were pleasant and tranquil.

“Avoid the smaller rooms”

Sebel Resort & Spa Hawkesbury

I stayed there for a conference, and stayed in two different rooms - one standard, the other a suite.

Room 61 in the Barracks wing was terrible. The bed was comfortable, but the lack of space and one tiny window up high made me feel claustrophobic. The bathroom had nowhere to hang anything, and space for clothes was severely limited. It said all beds are Queen size. This wasn't; it was a standard double. Any more than one person trying to squeeze into that room would have real trouble. No face clothes were supplied (they were in the suite)

Room 77 is a 2 room suite - living room, separate bedroom (king size bed), two TVs. The aircon didn't seem to work in the living area, and there was no remote for it. A friend in Room 75 had the same problem. It lacks real 5* thoughtfulness about it - for example, a handbasin int he separate toilet too close to the toilet, and nowhere to put the hand towel - bizarre in supposedly upmarket room. The light switches in the bathroom and toilet are worked in tandem, so you can't turn on one without the other. very strange.

Showers: ferocious water pressure (obviously they haven't heard about the drought and water saving!

Bar and restaurant are fine. Breakfast in the atrium good (although by lunch time it can be very humid in there in summer! )

Pool small for a "resort" but a nice area. The gym is a joke. For a start it is not air conditioned and so swelteringly muggy as to make you swoon!

This is an adequate place, but as other reviews have said, it's really not much more than a decent motel with pretensions. And in the smaller rooms, the average motel room offers more space, if less comfortable beds.
