The drive to the hotel certainly had the wow factor. The Reception, valet and general service were good. The view from our bedroom window in the main house also had the wow factor - and there it ended.
Our room - Fosscote - was, in a word, shabby. The two armchairs had threadbare patches on the arms and across the chair backs. The curtains had linings that were in tatters, with one curtain gradually parting company from the curtain rail as our stay progressed. The courtesy package was stocked with the usual powdered drinks - but where were the complimentary biscuits?
State of the art TV? No, I don't think so - not even Ceefax was obtainable. The kettle had to be placed on the floor in order to boil it, and a fumble in the dark at floor level was needed to connect the hairdryer anywhere near a mirror. The wardrobe was large and incorporated drawers - one without a handle - and all with an inch gap at the front when opened.
The view from the bedroom window was spectacular - looking out over the grounds, but was very close to the steps to the upper gardens, so there was lack of privacy at times. One of the windows had a quarter inch gap when closed.
The 'luxurious' bathroom consisted of the bath, a shower cabinet, toilet, bidet and wash basin - all of which had seen better days. The floor was stained wood with a nail sticking up just where you stepped.
The food, what can I say, was boring and limited. Our four-night stay had us hoping each night for a different menu (or Table d'Hote menu) - but to no avail. If you like orange foam instead of carrots or a green foam trail instead of asparagus, then this is for you - not for us. The breakfasts were very good!
The public rooms and dining room furniture were also shabby. On one occasion I nearly reached floor level sitting in an armchair and for anyone with a mobility problem this could be quite serious.
All in all we were very disappointed and very glad to leave. We thought that the old character of the building seemed to have been used as an excuse for keeping tired furnishings.
The brochure promised many things, such a pity it didn't live up to it.
